I think the days of buying a new truck and running it for 10-15 years are gone. They all seem to have issues, same as pickups. Progress, eh?

Doesn’t look like Armillaria either, although I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was present and the roots are shot. Chestnuts are pretty susceptible. Definitely one to rig small and go home, it’s pretty fubar’d.

I wouldn’t negatively rig any of that, just bomb chogs onto a 1/2 full bulk bag of brash.

Had one a few years mate. I was hoping we could wheel it into gardens to split metre sections into billets, but it’s such a pita to move onto the truck I’d probably get another hernia! I’m intending to take off two full weeks, then only pricing for two weeks after that. I’ll join the team again after that but only for driving and tipping duties. Two weeks of that, then ease back into it. Seeing the Consultant again in 8 weeks, so I’ll listen to him very carefully. He is a big advocate of keeping as mobile as I can without overdoing it.

Aye, machine power is definitely the way forward for me. I’ve still got some lumps up the yard that I hand balled onto the truck years ago and I look at them in disbelief. It’s a wonder my guts didn’t fall out of my arse years ago. When I’m fully fit I’ll do my strength training with weights in a more controlled environment, and do more core and body weight gym stuff (my garage gym is pretty well equipped now). Weirdly I was hitting PB’s on the bench AFTER my hernias were diagnosed. 100kg x 4 and 80kg x 15 earlier this week.

Good link Ben, cheers. Re your beech, could you just get a bat guy to climb and scope it and if no evidence is present then you’re good to go?

Thanks Mick. Proper recovery is key, but ultimately I hope to be able to do more physically, not less, certainly in terms of climbing etc. I will definitely ease back on the handballing of heavy timber though, pretty sure that’s what wrecked me. Just about to order these.

I tipped about 2 tonnes of beech rings up the yard yesterday afternoon, so I’ll handball them onto the stack tomorrow to check the op was successful.

I don’t think you could though? If the council have a facility like that and they screw it up, how can you be held responsible? Go back to the ‘90’s when you had to send a letter in requesting TPO status? Maybe Jules can confirm the position? @daltontrees

My mate has the Predator 460 Stu, and gets on very well with it. You still have to do a bit of manual work, which I know you’re used to, but it’s only swivelling. It seems a very capable machine, and he’s done some biggish nasty stumps with it.

Good luck with it Alec. I drove over to Morpeth last week from Elsdon, and there was some carnage along the way. As Mike says @MattyF might be able to help, or help with recommendations. Everyone will be hellish busy. Harvester will be quickest, and 10’ should give you access for one if the driver breathes in! -

What are they like loading onto a tipper up decent ramps Doobin? That would suit my plan best. Any future pics appreciated.

Prep is key. Clean out the hex head completely, then use brute force with exactly the right size allen key or driver. Using a vice will help.

As above. So dependent on weight, build, body type, climbing style etc., so many variables. We have a girl on the team now and she’s got on fine with a TM, Sequoia and my Koala, but she’ll try more before she buys. The Simarghu Gemini (excuse the spelling ) is designed for women I believe.
