  1. Perforated fuel pipe from filter to carb?
  2. Maybe so,but they're also very unpredictable!
  3. It seems to me you knew the risks before doing that one,but as said before i'd have strapped it up an taken an anchor off another tree.Well done for pulling it off.
  4. I spray our slide with comma spray grease, works fine.Only sawdust sticks to it as mentioned before. Also use the spray grease for the roller drive pinions on our jensen.
  5. Hard to learn, easy once you get up to it.Worst bit is always having to look down to keypads to see where buttons are, then you throw the saw chain off!
  6. What size trailer is that stevie?Do they still not make 12''x6''?Good trailers, well designed.I like the way the electrics for the tipping gubbins are in a box, unlike the ifor, which at this time of year is not very handy.
  7. Sounds to me like nobody was climbing and he didn't lokk up or get out the way when his tree came down mate
  8. Sad news.I 'm not saying that he was but it's so easy to become complacent and take the risks forgranted when you've been doing the job for a long time.''every one is out to get you'' i was once told.

Thanks for that paul, steep learning curve for us.I won't be cught out again. The client asked us to number the trees with spray paint-1,doesn't look very professional does it and 2,in a built up area i think there would be too many questions asked by passers by.So we opted for the subtle no nonsense tags.So i suppose it's my own pault as i wasn't asked to tag the trees. But as per your advice i'll charge next time after consulting or no tagging and walk away.
  10. Would i be right in thinking the 441 is going to become a 442 like the 362?
  11. I have a 441 and a 372.The 441 is heavier than the 372.441 drinks more juice than the 372.I think the 372 has the edge on performance. But the 441 has been a reliable saw unlike the 372.I like them both and used them both often.Hope this helps:001_smile:

Know what you mean.I once spoke to a joiner who said he charged for an estimate which was refundable on confirmation of the job.Mmm i thought, but he pointed out that if he spent all his saturday looking at work it mounted up and why should he do it for free.''fair point'' i replied.
  13. Use to sharpen all the harvester chains with the grinder,i can see it being handy for having a few spares in the truck, but once they've been done with the grinder am i right in thinking you can't touch them with the file again because they've been hardened.I've seen plenty bars do this as well,Usually caused by tight chain and lack of oil.I always found that a replacement sprocket in an old bar never lasted IMO:001_smile:

Fair enough. It,s a dog eat dog world out there though.I used to price too gain the work now i'm not bothered if i lose the job to a cheaper quote. But it does annoy me when you go out of your way to provide a quote and they don't even have the decency to let you know they gave it to someone else.

:confused1:Thanks guys,i'll put this one down as a bad experience. The next time i'll charge for it if we don't win the contract.Oh i forgot to mention we were recommended to him by a good friend of mine.SKYHUCK,how can you make that philosphy work?Surely you quote for large jobs too which is time consuming with no guarantee of gaining the work.
  16. We priced a large job about 5 months ago.The prospective client asked us to number all the relevant trees and recommend a course of action. The work to quote for consisted of some crown lifting over a main road(30mph) and removal of 3 or 4 DED elms and a bit of crown cleaning. It was a commercial property ie hotel. We tagged all the trees and catalouged all the recommended actions. We then submitted this with quote to the client.A couple of months passed with no word so we made a phone call and it sounded promising. On driving past this week i noticed the job had been done by another contractor,i don't know who.I feel very disappointed!i think at the very least a thanks but no thanks would be due after the time we spent on the quote.Or do you guys think a small charge would be in order for carrying out a somewhat basic survey in order to quote.
  17. ''suck it and see'' eh stevie.Things like that you just have to try first to see if it works, great tip!Have come up with a couple of ideas like that myself.Looks like you got some good climbing weather this week too:001_smile:
  18. We like you SAWDUST took on our groundie. All i would say is beware of the hidden costs ie holideys and extra national insurance. We paid ours a good wage because as said before i thought he was worth keeping, then after 18 months he started to lose interest. So we parted company and he's taken a different career route.I would never have an employee again, they cost too much and this one was a millstone round our neck! That's not to say yours will be a bad experince SAWDUST.Back to subbies for us.
  19. Been there once myself stu in a similar situation.Good that you decided to go for it,it's just as easy to roll over and take it too though.I did what you've done 5 years ago.Sounds like you've made a good start, best of luck.:001_smile:
  20. Mine was like that when we started but she learnt the hard way.She reverses better when i'm not there to annoy her!Trust have been good for us,no real difference on policy for wife.Maybe coz we're a partnership?
  21. Well said, every time i tip mine and i see the grit sitting on the chassis and every where else i can see troble ahead in the tipping department.Winter is really harsh on the old ifors!
  22. Hate to admit it but my wife often delivers with the land cruiser and 12'x6' tipper and it's amazing where she can reverse it when she has to.Go for it 88MAN,cheap labour!
  23. Been with trust for 5 years now tom.Very competitive and good service.EL,PL vehicles and tools covered(everything)
  24. We started paying all our bills, especially the larger ones by internet transfer because you the money comes out your account straight away, rather than when paying by cheque the recipient holding onto it for ages before cashing it!We are being payed by this method more often now too.Only thing is you have to keep on top of your banking to notice if you've been paid or not.Stevie why don't you use a fuel card for your fuel,it's alot handier, only one invoice to keep for your records every month.
  25. We have and have always had plenty work,i don't agree that employees work out cheaper. In the long run for us no,if you purely did tree surgery work where the profit margin is higher then yes this might be the case but firewood and forestry work where the margin is lower, we found it difficult to cover an employee's pay especially when advised by our accuontant to charge 100% more for the employee on a job to cover for all the associated expenses!
