  1. The entire exercise is as dodgy as can be, holding on for a short while may be possible but hand over hand 60 feet down a rope, if you didn't get clattered by the cage as it passed you, and you managed to survive the kinetic and impact from any pendulum swing. Your time would be better spent ensuring the machine was set up and guarded properly
  2. Ok, find yourself a good length of rope and have a go, see if you can hang on, if you manage to grab the rope at all. You are clearly set on your plan so go with that. Personally I don't rate the idea but its your funeral after all. That's me out of it then.
  3. That's a good analogy, RMS Titanic went down with such loss of life because of the failure to plan properly, that's got to tell you something hasn't it?
  4. I wouldn't mind watching
  5. So you maintain the bailing out down a 2" gym rope option as superior option to conventional wisdom? Ho hum
  6. A couple of points, your machine ought to be fitted with check valves to protect the machine in the event of an incident like a hydraulic failure. If someone collided with the platform that's entirely your fault, the machine should be set up and protected in such a way to avoid a struck by.
  7. Talk them into a thin, then a reduction followed by a reduction then some cable bracing. You only earn once from a felling:thumbup1:
  8. Looking at the cuts I would say that axe could do with a trip to the whetstone
  9. Oh man, I want some of whatever you have been smoking. If you were that spaced out the fall wont hurt a bit.
  10. I am sure I have read that wrong cos that's just going to give you a real good rope burn before you fall to your death:thumbdown:
  11. Well yes but I wish you all the luck in the world getting plod to take it seriously. Its also worth noting that if you are forced to abate the nuisance and the other party acts up you can always offer a counter suit to cover the cost of disposal The trespass is a civil wrong and the other party would need to bring a private action to prevent a re occurrence. If the trespassee caused unreasonable expense they could be exposed to a suit to recover costs And I also would be interested in the answer to the TPO (not conservation area???) question
  12. I cant help thinking you may have blown your dough on this Your ebay advert says you want a grand minimum. I cant help thinking its not much more than a pile of used parts and that's a lot of money for an old machine in that state. Its old, its got major non conforming modifications, and it is going to needs a fair bit of time and money to get it HSE compliant Let it run its course on ebay and take whatever you can get
  13. So it sounds like what you want is cheaper signage, good luck with that. It matters little if people take no notice of the signs, that's pretty much their look out, but what is important is that you can demonstrate that you used the signs. Stops you getting sued.
  14. Best practice would have you secured to the basket if you rope in to the object you are working on you could end up taking a big pendulum swing or, if you toped into both, having your PPE pulled in bits before you fall not a good way to go, stay with the accepted wisdom on this one
  15. Nice work, are the blade and bolster bought or in house?
  16. Is this for self employed or as an employee
  17. You still live at mummy's house ?
  18. Try a search This has been asked nearly as often as "which saw should I buy" http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/rigging-roping/7403-anyone-used-rigging-rope.html
  19. If its a bona fide sub contractor then they are liable for any damage they cause
  20. if they are bona fide sub contractors doing the entire job under their own steam they need to have their own insurance. You are ultimately responsible for site safety bit tne day to day stuff lands with the subbbie If they are free lance working under your direction they are under your insurance and safety is your responsibility A decent subbie will stand you to £150 a day
  21. Make your own wire fid for pennies and use the web for how to
  22. You pay list price????????
  23. Most places wont sign a maintenance contract unless you agree to this but that doesn't exclude doing any of your own repairs or maintenance Unless they are doing major unexpected works, that's a piss poor turn around. There is no black mark system and any black mark would reflect on the preparation I think that must be test plus any works
  24. You can do your own inspections, the powers that be like you to have suitable premises. There is nothing to prevent you doing your own inspections and getting any work needed by a contractor. The vehicle has to be maintained in safe condition but the law makes no requirement other than that they should be suitably qualified, experience is also a suitable qualification.
