  1. I use local dealer who makes them from a reel, if I'm on a job nearby, else I use the tinternet for them. I stay away from cheap chains though, stihl or oregon for me as a rule. Tend to find the cheaper chains go blunt quicker and don't take as many sharpens. Rob
  2. It's been proved in some test case or rather somwhere that an insurance company will pay out to the third party even if you've not done things right. Whether or not they'll pay you I guess depends on their t+c's and the mood of the loss adjuster.
  3. Thats fair enough, and I am already starting to seperate up the business as it's expanding. The property maintenance side that I ended up going into through a grass cutting client was split two years ago as it became big enough to be completely seperate and more a less runs itself. The tree work side did grow but has recently declined so depending on what happens I may split the grounds maintenace side and the tree work in two. I like irons in fires somepeople don't R
  4. But the good climbers may not have the business sense, ability or aren't willing to take the risk of becoming a tree firm. My work is mainly grounds maintenance with about 10 percent of it being tree work so it makes sense for me to hire in a decent climber when I need one. No point having quality climbers cutting grass!! R
  5. I'd be reckoning 800ish but depends on access, presumably they want it all removing from the garden? Could be a days work by itself? How much would oyu be charging in cornwall for a job like that then? Doesn't make me worry about not getting a lot of jobs when I hear some of the prices people are working for. R
  6. Call me thick but I don't get what exactly is being offerered or expected here. Will it just be a website where people order firewood and the nearest delivers them, or is someone planning on negotiation contracts with big supermarkets or petrol stations to supply them to a central hub? I'm just negotiating a deal to process a lot of wood so I'm trying to get up to speed on the best way to do it, as about 500ton of it would go through a processor but the other stuff (a few hundred ton) I think is going to need ringing and splitting with a big splitter. Obviously it's a bit difficult getting the right advice without giving out to much information that I could compromise my position. So might be interested depending on what the script is. R
  7. I don't think your to far out especially as you've seen the tree in real life, if your not that busy your certainly not going to lose money on that price. Also jobs like that where your the only one quoting aren't worth losing as there will always be more of them if you tread carefully. Always difficult when your leaving the final clear up for someone else, who is supposed raking up the sawdust and filling in any divets..... I normally find my first guess is the one I should have gone with. R
  8. So no need for any big equipment then, but that will take some ringing up! What figure first came into your mind for it? I quess the other major factor is how busy you are, and the status of the client, ie whats your competition? R
  9. Sorry was a bit of a flippant answer and always difficult to judge from a picture, and as I do sometimes have to quote from pictures I do tend to overquote to be safe. Kit wise it would vary depending on what the exact spec of the job was from a tractor to stack the logs with a big chipper to chip the brash, to just having lots of little minions running round with saws and a small chipper. A tractor costs about 3-4 times a day what I would pay a groundie, so the maths is quite simple to work out. If somebody could really do it for 1200 quid I'd quite happily sub the job to them. I work for myself to make a good living, not break even, but then I'm only working a few days a month rather than every day, so maybe I'm overcharging. If I wasn't earning that kind of money it's a no brainer I'd work (as I am at times) work for someone else, with no stress, hassle, cashflow and all the other business bumf to go with it. R
  10. It's your £75 though. I presume you were on price for the job, not day rate. Day rate can cause problems like the above... If your going to do the above leave it a month or to or it will come back to you!!
  11. There are some tossers out there, revenge is sweet, but in the long run how far does it get you. Best action is to go down the legal route, most people when they receive court paperwork poop their pants. Definitely wouldn't go down the dump rubbish on the drive, it's your reputation. On the sly however: I got sold a dodgy engine once, and bloke wouldn't refund me after I returned it, and he didn't get another one in like he agreed. Someone welded up his roller shutter doors one night, then a full skip got dumped outside his workshop door with the lugs cut off, then somebody took a scrap car in to get it MOT'd needless to say once the work was done it didn't get collected. Obviously nothing to do with me, but I popped in and asked if he'd thought anymore about the refund and he had strangely enough. R
  12. What is the lifespan of a helmet, is it 3 or 5 years. I've forgotten

    Stihl ms441

Whats the biggest bar you can put on a 660 then? I know that 36 is the biggest recommended by stihl, but 48inch is the biggest for the 88, whereas you can get a 60. Would a 48 go on but be slow? R
  14. Mine that really hasn't seen enough use recently. Heavy, but bombproof - a bit like it's owner!!!
  15. Are you the guy selling mills on ebay? Ifso I may be contacting you when I'm back in September. I may have about 400 ton of timber to deal with but they want firewood, carvings, milled timber etc making up that they can sell as a variety of products in a sort of eco friendly type shop. R
  16. I'm not quite sure what the crack will be out there, going out there to do some work for a guy that we used to do some work for in France. Obviously my insurance doesn't work out there, and I've made that clear to him. Accordingly that will limit what I'm prepared to tackle, but he's got some contacts so hopefully................ R
  17. Whereabouts you off to? I fly out Sunday for 3 weeks. R
  18. I'm getting excited now, gona get to knock over a few big trees whilst over there by the looks of it to!! R
  19. Thats a 3rd off then so worth a look, even if I do get unlucky and stung for duty on the way in. Cheers R
  20. I'm off to canada for a little while on sunday, anybody know if it would be worth my while buying any stuff -tools, ropes etc out there. Just wondering how many pennies to take with me. Rob
  21. Only mine when I hire it in for the day................... I can't work out how the numbers would ever add up to buy one, unless it's in daily use
  22. You should really, wouldn't worry to much about it though, imortant bit is the letter back from DVLA. What I do when I sell vehicles is to draw up a little simple sheet saying vehicle reg, id etc sold to ..... for....... on the date at time then both sign it. Do two of these, you keep one, he keeps the other. Rob
  23. As long as you have filled in the section on the log book and send it off you have done everything legally as if you were selling a 200k car. I would send it recorded tho, then you can prove that it was sent if it did go wrong. You'll get a letter back of DVLA in about 2 weeks saying thankyou for the notification of change of keeper, then it is no longer your problem, again file that letter in a safe place. Rob
