  1. we let our sweet chestnut season for at least 2 years - but more often 3 - before we sell it for firewood - to burn easy it will burn with less seasoning - but not so well - imho
  2. we don't have many thefts from our little patch of wood - as we are fenced in and have several locked gates leading up to the main access into the site we have had uninvited visitors though - causing much damage to locks and chains as they try to get in a mate of ours has had a load of timber pinched from his site - and we have just lent him some heavy duty cables (i think my dad got them off a trawler) he is going to lay the cables on the ground, stack his timber on them - then bring the cable ends over the top of the timber stack and lock them together this probably won't stop an organised gang - but it will deter some or at least slow them down the cameras are a good idea - but they have to be well hidden and out of sight - else they will get nicked too
  3. hope everybody has a good one
  4. had a couple of inches here in the early hours

    prices.

i agree - if you don't have to buy timber in - don't have the overheads of rent or such and don't have to see a quick return because of expensive equipment - i see no reason to be greedy we just log as we go - all year round - we only use a chainsaw and axe (or splitting maul) - we own the land and all the timber - we are debt free - stress free - and enjoy the lifestyle
  6. good on yer - enjoy the equity (you can't take it with you after all ) i would love to have something like that to "play with" - but your pics and analysis will do for me for the time being (when you get it)
  7. looks like they have rebuilt the wall
  8. good job our place is well locked up then
  9. i will be putting the price up on our logs in the new year (to all new customers) with fuel prices going up again - it's starting to get expensive filling up the van - plus if they want dry and seasoned wood which will burn lovely - they are going to have to pay for it i don't see a problem in chancing your arm on a higher price through flea bay -
  10. i have three springers (maddog, titch and splodge) i like chip or how about: woody bramble digger
  11. nothing wrong with a good saw and a splitting axe
  12. don't sell it - sorry - just hard woods here
  13. that is always a lovely position to be in a mate of ours processes and sells logs - but he is a naughty boy and sells wet stuff to his clients - and as he doesn't have any dry stuff at all - for himself to burn - he comes to our wood with his tail between his legs - to buy seasoned cord for his burner at home
  14. the biggest bangs i have had from logs - is actually lumps of old beech - when the grubs are in them - boy do they go off with a bang
  15. as said above - don't worry about it - when they see how nice that elm burns on the fire - i doubt they will want to be counting how many logs were in the load
  16. if it is seasoned well enough - it rarely spits
  17. where are you? i know a chap that has a good few acres to clear - so if you are based in the south, give me a shout and i'll give you some contact details

    hi mark
  19. a good friend of mine asked me about delivering logs to their son in melksham - but it's too damn far for me - even for a mate anyone on here want to pm me their details (and charges) so i can pass on the info cheers
  20. hey steve - i have just had a funny guy on the phone asking about logs (and the size of the load etc) i wonder if it was your fella - i suggested he carry on shopping around getting back on topic i doubt we will ever run out of logs
  21. season it properly - log it up and leave it out in a pile - for 2 years cut down any standing deadwood if you need logs now - as that is already seasoned
  22. no probs - will let you know early next week
  23. i can't get over to the woods until next week now - but i'll have a look for you when i go on mo or tues - to see what is about - might be able to sort you out
  24. how much do you need and what do you want it for?
