  1. ..theres also a pond, decorative fountain thing, an old fragile looking cotswold stone wall and an immovable concrete compost container thingy... target city. all that aside it's going well so far though.
  2. that, we don't need
  3. aye, it's properly big...or at least it was this morning.. Hopefully crazy lady is at work tomorrow.
  4. Monster oak removal today, got 2 days on it but should be finished by lunchtime tomorrow. Not our own but a subby job through about 3 other people, the owner of the house owns a plant hire company so called in one of his boys who knows how to start a chainsaw to "get the big cherry picker and come over and cut this tree down"..chainsaw bloke didn't fancy it so called his landscape gardner/tree surgeon mate to come and help him who didn't fancy it either so called a tree surgery firm who also didn't fancy it so called us.. lots of cooks - one kitchen..lovely.! No action shots or before pics as I was climbing. Had the ultimate nightmare neighbour psycho lady as well, she completely lost the plot because of the sawdust coming into her garden. Actually forced us to stop work just as we had got into a decent rhythm and then we had to stand around for 45 mintues while people phoned other people who then phoned different people to try and calm her down...was difficult to get back into the groove after it was all sorted out. anyhow, huge multi stem oak on it's way out overhanging 4 gardens, situated at the bottom of some rich blokes garden, end of day 1 and about 7 stems done, 2 1/2 left.
  5. chip as you go... nice pics, perfect blue sky.
  6. Not overly keen on side d's either dude...nice work:001_smile:
  7. 88ft deffo not over 100 imo.
  8. I knew I would be right.I'm naturally clever, always have been.
  9. take into account the point of view before you start measuring the climber and adding up the height...
  10. no more than 70 I would say...65 has gone so I'll go for 66:001_smile:
  11. I love conifers
  12. sounds real nasty.
  13. I'll have the c905 in a months time when my contract is up...8mp camera on a phone smaller than a pack of tabs is genius..
  14. Usually the crane driver will be in a line of sight with the climber, you will have a banksman..(groundie)..and he must at all times know what is happening, what is going to happen next and be ready to communicate this to either driver or climber at all times with hand signals. There is a banksman's ticket you can attain, and there are lads on the firm who have this. Radio headsets can be used I suppose although we have never used them...it all boils down to the people on the job, the only times hand signal were used today were when dropping the lifts on the other side of the garage, everyone knew their job and it was easy so went well. If you look back I posted a thread last year called "700yr old oak" or something like that..I forget which crane it was now, the 60 tonner iirc, very few signals were given that day either and the tree was huge, there were only 3 men on the job including the driver...gives you an idea of how simple it is when everyone is competent. If the crane operator is good enough, it will be the easiest days work you have ever done, if he's a newbie to tree work you could be in for a long hard day...
  15. lol.true though. It's an absolute joy to work with him and his kit, salt of the earth and no mistake....to be fair we use modern kit all the time, the latest and greatest grinders, chippers, cranes etc...but I am very lucky to have been able to work with this kind of kit as well. He has a monster boughton winch on the back of a fordson major, with a steel re-inforced underbelly that would put a sherman tank to shame...it will pull anything out of anyhwere I sh1t you not. Love it.
  16. lol...try typing with a lithp...
  17. birch always goes well imo, beech looks absolutely bob-on...good job.
  18. haha, no worries dude. I couldn't tell you if I wanted to. This guy has been building and driving this kind of machinery his whole life, so has his brother and so did his father...He has Boughton winches, Matador's, fordson majors etc etc...all of it is used all year round, all of it has been built with his own fair hands...and most of it is called into pull the modern equivalents out of the mire when they get in too deep...After the floods he spent weeks clearing up the mess, pulling capsized 70footers out of the avon etc...what he doesn't know about winches and cranes and how to use them isn't worth knowing. I trust him, my boss trusts him and so does the firm we were subbying to today. I don't want to, need to or care to, check his equipment or credentials.
  19. whats loler?
  20. 5mp sony cybershot is what I use..it's pretty much a focussed camera phone tbh...it's pretty good.
  21. with the fly on about 65ft I suppose weight wise I'm not sure...at full reach with the fly on then it wouldn't be much...maybe less than a ton. The last proper days work we gave it was a huge london plain, we had a day stripping it and then a day craning down the timber..big tree with a massive spread and the biggest lift we did can't have been much more than a ton 1/2 so it wasn't an issue really. Heres a little vid of it loading some oak onto the trailer last year. [ame] [/ame]
  22. was he tied in below the limb then tim..?
  23. nice pics tom, was there much deadwood in it? looks pretty healthy.
  24. perfect size mate, only slightly wider than the isuzu 5 1/2 tonner we drove up in. We have another little job for the bedford soon, have a large cedar to takedown in a churchyard..(if we get the job)..can't get a crane anywhere near it, but the bedford just fits through an archway and up the driveway, right to the side of the tree...doesn't have enough reach to take care of the tops, but will be able to lift all the chunks down with it, straight into a trailer.
  25. Just a name he earnt after pulling the plug on the tilt alarm when it goes off...
