  8. what spikes have you got mate..??
  9. yep, 2-piece ladders at full stretch from a mewp basket at full stretch...no harness, ppe, or fear..
  10. That reminds me...we did a job before christmas and a firm was clearing up a horse chestnut right next door. Turned out to be a building firm who were due to build an extension and the tree was in the way so to save money they felled it themselves, 80ft tree with wide spread...big job. They hired in a mewp and spent a few days nibbling away at it until they had reached the limits of the mewps reach...out came the ladders..can you guess what happened next..?
  11. on a side note, that avatar is hilarious...

could do with a good gale or 2 to help fill the books a little..
  13. pretty much mate, 5 blokes could join hands and you wouldn't reach round the trunk so throwlines are pretty much useless for getting a rope up there, The other tree that I sat on top of in 05 is even worse. The branches are at such an angle that you can't even send you anchor round the trunk as it will just slip down, you couldn't even get a foothold on most of them so you can understand what chance a rope has of remaining in place, none...it's a challenge, but one that is overcome by the use of spikes. Hopefully the Sequoia's that tribal is due to do won't need such measures, as the climbing is so much more enjoyable without them, but to get to the point of enjoyment I needed spikes. I could possibly arrange a climbing get together at the site if anyone has a different method, I genuinely am interested in methods of ascent of difficult tree's.
  14. drew beat me to it..
  15. pmsl..drew is phoning in sick now on his second day in his new job... ..what a chump..lol

  19. or claim off the insurance for it... hows the driver?
  20. wheres this theocus.?..avon or severn..?
  21. I don't mean out of reach, height wise. Reaching a branch 60 feet up isn't going to achieve anything. Thats not an anchor point on these welly's, you wouldn't even be able to set up a single line. I find it hard to put it into words what I mean....The rope needs to go round the trunk and back down the same side. Maybe the Sequoia are different in that respect but on the wellies this was the case. Apologies, I know people like to frown upon use of gaffes in these cases, I'm not even that keen on wearing them. Maybe it's just me but I feel comfortable knowing I have made the effort to change my climbing style once I was able to stand...I believe I made every effort to cause minimal damage. I think I will keep all spike related comments to myself in future..
  22. any line has to go round the back of the trunk, there are no single anchor points until halfway up AT LEAST, the branches go straight down. Theres no way I could throw a line up and over a branch, round the trunk, over another couple of branches and back down.
  23. ok. What system would you use to get to a height that you can anchor in..? Theres nothing to anchor to for a good 60ft, even more on the other tree. The bark is 2 or 3 times thicker than the depth of a short gaffe, I couldn't see a better way, am ready and able to try any other methods you can suggest.
  24. each one will be slightly different, but generally they are a pleasure once you are about halfway up...first half is difficult. Did these recently, have been looking after 5 of them up until last year, now just the first 2. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=4248 spikes and 2 climbing ropes for the first half - no spikes 1 climbing rope and 2 3m strops to the top....
  25. thats a lovely lowering system you have there mate.. nice video.
