  1. Dean, I got a 130 tipper and have been thinking of the best way of transporting chippings without a box . AT the length you want it put in uprights mirroring the front and have removable gaged sides also matching the front. This will utilise the trucks dropsides enabling easy loading of logs , good visiability and the bonus of chipping into ,with the help of a canvas sock/bag that can be tied/cliped into the 4 corners. Then the chips wouldnt fly out the back in transport. Then you wont have the drag and fuel consumption of a permenant box but a versitile do it all beaters inc landi ?? Just an idea
  2. Thats a job to take on! Roots have been well pruned by the looks of things, is this logistical operation common with our antipodean friends? Ps How you enjoying guildford? if you landed that is....
  3. Always refilling my my ppe first aid kit with smaller plasters due to my silky lol! But one thing I have in it is a TAMPON, Also a string on my whistle fixed to pouch incase i have to retreive it if in a fix I hope none of have to use it. A good thing is always check whats in it so you dont have to scrabble about. In my truck I have my Emergency procedure sitting on the front seat with the big fa kit, grid ref, local hosp, access point, grid ref etc So hopefully my groundy wont run around like a headless chicken and hopefully precious time will be saved. hope im not teaching you all to suck eggs

  5. typical!! Truck im after and the right colour! But im way down south and they seen to be like hens teeth! they have either been round the clock or beaten to s***e! Is the whole chassis shot? or just the rear x/member /outriggers?
  6. Nptc quals are the ground level for entry in arb they enable a very basic understanding of the industry and can also help determine wether or not working in/with trees is suitable for the candidate. It is up to the employer/manager to oversee the climber, after draggin brush and loading chippers ( then they will cut properly 4 feeding chipper etc) Firstly starting with pruning with silky/felcos on small garden trees so experience/confidence is gained. A few days or even a ten wk course also does not and should not give the person the open door to start up business/or be sent out in this highly skilled occupation. ALL THE GEAR NO IDEA Cannon fodder! especially in areas nr colleges for the ruthless and loppers. Maybe insurance companies are partly to be blamed ?? If you have the nptc you can be insured if they were more stringent with checks in work history/ experience etc then only the people with the interest and commitment to trees would be covered possibly reducing accident /premiums.?? At least 5 years of hard work and ongoing training you could call yourself an arb. I am always trying to better myself and admit that I dont know it all infact every day I learn. To cutt it short a mixture of quals /apprenticeship should be the way to go.
  7. Hi lee Maybe not !! The site history as you know, is also an important factor in deduction. The 'above' would be the symptoms / signs of water logging and by investigation and ticking boxes it clears the way for proper thorough diagnosis. I have come across similar on building sites where landfills and imported soils can cause all mysterious symptoms and head scratching!! lol
  8. The rfs course is a good grounding for the aa tech the same ground covered but the aa tech is obviously a bit more in depth I did the course but missed the exams due to sum **** murdering my mate a few days before the exam so was not in the best frame of mind. The price has certainly shot up. Plant ident is the tricky bit as in they are not sp that you come across in every day (well in my line anyway) biology bit read botany for gardeners by brian capon thats the buisiness I will take the exams one day but work has taken over. OH to be a student with all those young ladies!!
  9. recession only comes into affect after a slow down in two financial terms and we aint hit them yet so the fun is only just beginning..... Our only hope is 'duty of care ' owners occupiers act and the rumours of the' tree police' having qual arbs inspecting gardens etc if the powers be go ahead. with heating fuel supposedly increasing this winter by 40% at least iv got my xmas presents sorted LOGS!
  10. They love the full sun but what about its drainage?
  11. We all have customers that want the impossible but I have been asked to move 40m of leylandii- YES you read it! move 40m of established 12ft manicured. seriously thou with their grafted roots and sp I havnt got a chance in hell?! Even with a prepared trench ,feed and an air spade 10% chance of survival? if im lucky or not? I have recomended grubbing out and replanting new stock instead, but it fell on deaf ears can anyone back me up|? or has any one done similar? So not everyone hates em lol
  12. Water damage would cause the roots to die and be stained ? , new adventitious roots wood be present above with yellow (chlorotic )leaves. When flush the trees would be affected more. When planted different soil may have been used and if more porous the trees would sit in puddles even if the soil looked dryer
  13. Customer with large hedge asked me : coud you just take the top out without reducing the height?!
