    Free saplings are still available under the diamond jubilee.We have planted 420 forest fruit & nut, and 420 firewood.Just ordered 420 wetland for delivery in March.

    Zeroluke If I did not use logs rejected by customers (softwood) then I would use the waste sawdust I generate in processing logs.At the moment I use the waste sawdust to heat my polytunnel in a home built sawdust burner.

    Majority of saving is down to replacing oil central heating boiler with Dunsley Yorkshire boiler. We live in a draughty old grade 2 listed stone farmhouse with single glazed windows. Replacing the oil AGA with an Esse probably saved £250 a year

    You could buy solar kiln dried logs from ourselves. We guarantee to be less than 20% moisture content and always have a moisture meter available to prove the point on delivery. As part of our quality control the date when the logs where split and put in the solar kiln is attached to the IBC container so we can do a proper stock rotation.

    Gas bill zero. Cooking and hot water Esse range. Central heating Dunsley Yorkshire. Cost of logs zero as we use the "softwood" rejected by picky customers. Dont have gas in the village so used to be all oil spending £3500 per year at todays oil price it would be more like £6000.

    You can always put scaffold pole extensions onto the poly tunnel frames to increase the height.

    Please dont try and compare new ploughs to old as everything that used to be manually adjusted is all done hydraulically at the touch of a button. Heres a modern Lemken video to highlight the point. Notice in particular how little sway you get when lifting the modern plough. Do the same on an old plough and it would be swaying from side to side. Juwel - Lemken - The AgroVision Company I only highlighted Lemken as my old plough is a Lemken which is fully adjustable for wheel tracking with 7 holes in a row held in place with just 2 pins .And yes I was brought up on heavy clay land in Lincolnshire with the plough being made redundant on the local estates in the early eighties with the advent of a 1 pass system

    For a start we were not talking about modern ploughs as most modern ploughs are so wide that you plough on the level. If you let the chains sway as you suggest I would hate to see how straight the furrow will be. All ploughs have a tendency to pull wide and the use of the sway chain to stop this is standard practice. CJ I dont have a problem with my ignorance while I have a straight furrow and others have furrows like a dogs hind leg. The way I plough works for me.

    Thats just total rubbish. If you have done any ploughing at all you would know that the plough itself is adjustable for offsett and then the fine tuning can be achieved using the adjustable chains attached to the link arms. From memory fergie tractors could be adjusted from 48 inch upto 76 inch in 4 inch increments but for all our rowcrop work we used 48 inch.

    We tried it and called them joiners offcuts in log size bags and half the price of kindling. Never worked ended up just losing premium kindling sales. Even put 20 bags into local farmers weekly auction and did not even get a bid. Eventually chipped and turned into briquettes.

    I was thinking similar but using small excavator with felling shear to drag trees to ride then process with stroke processor on ride enabling brash to be harvested at the same time.

    Used `a mole plough for planting whips in the past. 3 inch pipe behind the mole plough blade originally used for pipe laying but adapted for whips by cutting a 1 inch slot in the pipe.

    Sorry but you cant teach an old dog new tricks. In the old days when tractors ploughed with one wheel in the furrow it was standard practice to reverse the tyre direction on the wheel in the furrow to give better grip on the pulling wheel.

    Ag tyres are optimised for doing least damage to the crop while travelling forward which means rotating in the direction were the tyre is self cleaning. If you want maximum traction then reverse will give you more. Why do you think it is better to reverse out when stuck rather than carry on going forward.

    Is it just me that prefers to attach line to front of tractor rather than rear.

    permitted development is a bit of a myth depending on whether your council lets you get away with it or they insist on a full planning application. Best advice is to get a good land agent on the task. Our agricultural building should have been permitted development but we had to go to appeal due to the attitude of the local council. Thankfully I had a good land agent to put my case forward and run rings around the council.
