  1. I would be interested if anybody has any Fussell billhooks for sale either John or Isaac
  2. I use it instead of lime to increase the ph but not all plants like a high ph so you have to be selective where you apply. It is also high in potassium so very useful in a crop rotation.
  3. Bit more info if you fancy a go http://www.highlandbirchwoods.co.uk/UserFiles/File/publications/Information-Sheets/Info4.pdf When it comes to marketing "farmers markets" are good and the planners have difficulty arguing against a business plan if you can show trade on several farmers markets especially if you get on the "foody markets" that the council promote themselves.
  4. Problem you have got is the acreage is to small to make a living from selling logs without importing timber. What you need is a high value product and do your timber as a sideline. Might I suggest Introduction to Forest Mushroom Farming - GWM Cultivation Strategy Which of course being food will need a clean preparation and packaging area such as the existing building. For the strategy to work you must do fully costed business plans for the next 3-5 years with the emphasis on food production and the sideline of logs which is a by product of cutting the mushroom logs to shape. It does work we had the same response when we first started our horticultural business fortunately we where over the magic 5 hectares in total but the horticultural side has never been more than 1 acre in total.
  5. Typical auto boiler used for thermal oil http://www.kornfeil.com/uploads/tx_odproducts/BioTherm_05.pdf
  6. Fortunately John is not so gullible. If I had to design my own biomass fired kiln then it would be based on the tried and tested thermal oil bakery kiln technology used in Europe using the true waste of the industry of woodchip and sawdust.
  7. We are an island nation like New Zealand and should have similar rules instead where just the dumping ground for Europes waste. I had friends in horticulture who emigrated to New Zealand and in order to get there specialist horticulture equipment into the country it all had to be stripped down and resprayed to be as good as new. Thats how serious they are on disease.
  8. That is the problem you have the likes of Defra discussing using RHI to improve the sterilization of timber based on research using high temperature steam or thermal oil kilns which everyone knows will work and then apply it to an untried and untested low temperature kiln. Its not rocket science you only have to look as far as legionaires disease to realise how difficult pathogens are to kill. Unfortunately low temperature kilns are widely used in Europe so just because it is kiln dried does not guarantee it is pathogen free. If I was in Defra shoes I would ban all imports of timber unless it was torrefied timber.
  9. Steam at less than 100C well I suppose they could have done the tests on top of Mount Everest. Dont confuse air temperature with water temperature. You cannot draw in air at 10C and with a water temperature of 60C in your heat exchanger expect the output air temperature to be 60C. Unfortunately thermodynamics does not work like that. I suggest you monitor the temperature of the water in your heat exchanger and compare it to the air temperature 1 mtr in front of the heat exchanger. Thankfully I do more than just sell logs. Part of which is power generation using woodchip turned into torrefied wood. I will be using solar PVT on a new agri building that I have planning permission for and will claim RHI but it will also increase the PV output by 15% so the Fits payments will be higher as well. Your log kiln would not be an option as like many other people in the country we live in a smoke controlled zone and unfortunately the Glen Farrow boiler you have used is not authorised for use in a smoke controlled area.
  10. Not my problem as I am at the top end of temperature ranges doing torrefied wood using thermal oil. I know high temperature steam kiln drying works at killing pathogens but I would not trust relatively low temperature (less than 100C) to kill all pathogens especially when the health of our forests are at risk from diseased imported timber.
  11. I know when they had that comet in Russia a lot of the videos were from auto recording in cars. Do we have similar that are good enough to be used as evidence in court.
  12. As I suspected the figures relate to a steam heated kiln
  13. I have always associated high temperature kiln drying to mean either by steam or thermal oil.
  14. Sorry but a water based heating kiln is not going to hack it in an attempt to kill pathogens.
  15. I have a grading blade which I use for forest tracks but has seen more use snow ploughing recently than road repairs. Not a lot of use for ripping up the road but ideal for adding stone and putting on a camber.
  16. Tucky I am not surprised the multifuel boilers are rated using coal so your 8 kw would only be giving approx 6 kw to the boiler on wood. You dont get that problem on the bigger Dunsley Yorkshire as the thermostatic air vent regulates the heat output.
  17. I have wood fired Esse range for cooking and hot water.
  18. Probably just a couple of days wood supply for Drax when they get it all converted to biomass.
  19. Tucky What was up with your Dunsley. We have a Dunsley Yorkshire boiler running 11 radiators in this old listed farmhouse and it is brilliant. Also the Dunsley is approved for use in a smoke controlled area which was an added factor which we had to take into consideration and excluded boilers like the Glenn Farrow.
  20. Could be down to price. Market price used to be £250 per tonne for briquettes and wood pellets its now below £180 per tonne at which point it becomes uneconomic for me. I have mothballed my machines at present but will start again when my commercial pv panels have been installed as with free electric it will become viable again.
  21. I do it with both briquettes and wood pellets but for briquettes the moisture content has to be below 15% and for wood pellets below 12%. I also reduce the size of the chip by using a hammer mill.
  22. Put it this way I sell my kindling for 5x more than what I was offered by CPL. Needless to say I dont work for nothing but they obviously find some people mad enough to supply them.
  23. Plenty of time the new legislation comes in 1st April 2014
  24. If you want to make briquettes out of it then the moisture content needs to be below 15%.
