  1. The point I was trying to make stevie was that companies other than in the tree business have materials to buy which increases there gross profit. E.g 4 men cut a tree down at a cost of £100 a man (£400 total cost) with a 20% margin thats only a gross profit of £100. 4 men lay a pipe at a cost of £100 a man (£400 total cost) and the pipe costs £400 with a 20% margin thats a gross profit of £200. Like a say unless Im missing something.
  2. miles more than 20% but I only have 4-6 staff
  3. Just got back from the local... speaking to a few blokes who have a few pence more than me The majority of medium sized companies as in 10 - 50 staff try to achieve a net profit of around 20% and obviously even more on their gross. Companies below these numbers obviously try and achieve a lot bigger margins (masive companies more like 3-8%). But hold on a minute these large companies are laying expensive pipes buying thousands of £'s worth of materials to build hotels, business parks and houses, us tree men don't have materials to buy, the trees are our exsisting free materials. Therefore should our margins be larger or is it all relative to time scales. Can't help thinking if a lay some gold plated sewers for the lord of Wigan in 2 days I will be loaded with 20% margins:001_rolleyes: I must be missing something
  4. Over the worst of it for sure, don't think I have had flu like that since I was as school
  5. You not wrong a few months back me and a climber friend did some vegetation clearance on the same rock face but rather than abseil down we thought we would have a bit of fun and climb up first, my mate led on the the first climb, he slipped and his first bit of protection (a friend / cam) ripped out far too easily, he only fell 8 foot mind, maybe luck though.
  6. There covered by TPO so will probably have to get a report done first,
  7. I have a few friends who have houses situated in an old sandstone quarry and were asking if large oak trees growing out of the face will cause potential rock fall, I cant see any cracks in the rock, is there a way this could be monitored apart from the the obvious signs of cracks.
  8. if its been driven on ag tax incorrectly, why will HGV license help without Op Licence etc.
  9. Is that because the actual vehicle is not registered ag like a mog. Also doin my class 2 very soon in prep for my new vehicle setup plans
  10. dont tell Rupe
  11. Some of the biggest construction companies in the uk sub out every single aspect of a project and don't own any machinery etc. As Buzz states a company would never grow if it did'nt advertise or market a service with out owning the gear. I can not see a problem even if it was to the point where a company subbed a saw man, a chipper and operator and a chip disposal method such as an ag trailer as long as a quality job is undertook and the client is happy.
  12. If he did trip then fair enough. But the first thing I thought about was the fact he was feeding hedge trimmings, we all get are hands to close to the rollers when pushing in trimmings and twigs when that nice 1 meter push stick has been chipped. Either way I hope he gets over it soon.
  13. male escorts get paid a fortune, you don't need to retrain if your as good as me.
  14. Nope:bored: My commercial margins are better than my domestic
  15. I would think your more than capable but far too busy to go through the process, the accreditations Im applying for and management systems required are being implemented by a consultant.
  16. I am going through the process at the moment as well as achilles, ISO 9001 and CHAS. I have been told by 3 or 4 companies of different trades that it really helps at the pre-tender stage, and obviously a lot of construction / Utility companies demand it. Its not going to suddenly win work but its going to give a flying start when tendering.
  17. I think it would be great if every one posted a near miss they have had as a warning for newly qualified or as a reminder for complacent veterans, My biggest near miss was about 3 months after qualifying and I cut a huge lateral limb 20 feet long on a pine about 15 foot up and as the tip landed the but came back towards me and missed me by inches
  18. We have an old freezer container (8 inch insulatoin) with 3 dehumidifiers and 3 heaters, running off a waste vege oil generator. Drys firewood to 25% in 6 days. The firewood is cut into plastic storage boxes that are stacked 2 high by 8 long running on rails for easy loading / unloading.
  19. yeah kwikchip, seen 2 for sale at whats seems to be a good price, but maybe not if there poor quality?
  20. Any one had experience of these,
  21. Another wrap of the hitch and all will be fine.
  22. sounds like a plan, just been looking back at past jobs in the last 12 months I reckon I could have used a small loader atleast twice a week and knocked a good few hours off completion time
  23. I have been thinking of getting one for ages now due to the amount of large domestic trees in back gardens we have removed. What is the width of the smallest loaders, some houses have such small access gates.
  24. Do any companies hire out processors of a decent size???
  25. yeah been on there for a few months, its not the pipeline causing the havoc (Murphy) any road in the way is being tunnelled under, all the problems are another utility firm not sure what work their doing.
