  1. If you have a PTO saw bench and horizontal splitter, how much longer does it take to produce firewood than with a basic processor.
  2. When using a Stihl Pole Pruner always put the fuel cap on tight. If it vibrates loose a pint of petrol may pour on the area between the top of your legs causing a severe burning sensation on parts of the body that are located in that region. This is an incident that happened to me very recently (4 hours ago to be precise). Its more of a tingle now so am considering if to make the same mistake tomorrow!
  3. It is a U1000 and is dual clutch is that the same as twin-plate?
  4. When I bought my Unimog the Clutch was slipping hence got it cheaper. However I did not take the plug out of the bell housing when checking the vehicle before purchase and loads of oil came out. Turned out crank seal had gone and contaminated clutch. Crank seal had gone because shells were worn. Anyway got it all sorted was not that more expensive that just doing the clutch. I now have a small amount of what looks to be gear oil coming out of the bell housing obviously another seal, my question is this: should this have been picked up on when the mechanic was replacing crank seal, shells etc.
  5. Don't know if this makes any difference to peoples view but the diameter of the lombardy was about 26 inches.
  6. Was wondering what the largest inch PTO chipper that will run well on say a 1750 or a 2450 Unimog on 3-point linkage not towable. Saw that 20inch Heizohack that was towable, but want to know the largest with standard unimog set up i.e. chipbox, 3pl. Just interested to know.
  7. Don't know if this has ever been mentioned before....After walking home after half a dozen beverages at my local watering hole, I was wondering if anyone has ever considered organising a forum get together .
  8. I originally worked in IT and did a degree in Computer Science. Lasted 2 years, money was excellent but nearly went insane with boredom, clock watching all the time. Although we all deserve more financially from our trade, it is a passion and we don't resent going to work. When I did IT I used to work for a year and then go travelling for a while based around mountaineeing, which is how I got into arb. Realised I could not do this for ever. 99% of the population hate their job / trade. So although you can get £15 an hour taking PC's out of boxes and puttin them on desks, I am already looking forward to being 60ft in the air on Monday and getting paid for it.
  9. I should add that obviously if the demand for climbers went up that the market would pick up generally therefore a business would be making more profit.
  10. Although there are a hundreds of members on this forum, its scary how many people have had accidents. Reading this thread has made me think and I should go back in the morning to finish a job today and not force the closure of the work. Although I am not a subby climber and run a business it really gets to me how climbers get payed so little. Every decent climber should be getting £150+ if not just for the dangers of the work. Even if the climber is totally safe, there are so many external parameters that can not be controled. I would like to see the NPTC courses much much harder so 100's of climbers are not appearing every year. Therefore making climbers more in demand. Its too easy to pass you NPTC climbing tickets even if you make a mistake on the assessment you get a second chance.
  11. Anyone know of a good source to get a good 300tdi engine for defender,
  12. I have a 110 defender hard top van, it is wasted as is only ever a 3rd full with kit and I use my unimog and PTO chipper for most jobs. Thought I would use my Defender for domestic work and use Mog for commercial. I have bought an aluminium LDV pick up bed with hydraulic pump, ram and under frame etc off ebay for a £195.. bargain! Apart from maybe looking a little stupid is there any law implication with having a pickup bed that will stick out 10 inches at each side. Me and my mate are going to convert it the evenings next week, might extend my defender chassis a little to get some extra length and if I feel extremely mad might stick another axle on to use the 10 foot length. will only ever be loading chip but will upgrade suspension to same as hi-cap pickup. Also how to you get the gross weight increased / re-plated.
  13. Thanks for the help everyone, got it sorted from your posts, need to install is now so I can go and get stuck and self recover.
  14. My local husky dealer charges £6, I live in NW who's you local dealer if you don't mind me asking.
  15. The best groundsmen (one that is using a chainsaw) not just a labourer feeding the chipper are probably good subby climbers. People who have had years of experience using saws and know how to look after kit. But then you would be paying your groundy's £100+ a day! You pay for what you get! All though this is not true in all cases and there are some awesome groundsman out there. I pay my groundys obvioulsy less then that and have to put up with them digging holes with the saw and not looking out for wire on felled trees etc. When I have had 3 groundys workin on larger jobs you would not believe how a person could ruin a saw in such a short space of time. Which takes me back to why this forum started and why had changed chains at a point in the day. Sharpening a chain is easy to the experienced but if im 50 foot in the air and my groundsman hits a nail, clearly it is easier for him and me to put a different chain on and sort the chipped / Blunt chain out later rather than watch him agonisingly waste 30 minutes. I have learnt a valuable lesson on the forum explain exactly what you mean other whys expect a load of flack!!
  16. Your not wrong specially when you have many ramdom subby groundsman on a big job. In an ideal world I would love to do all the cutting myself, but on a big job when I can not do everything, my gear comes back in all sorts of states.
  17. Not sure if I will make my self look slightly stupid but here goes.... Chains are that cheap for a 15" husky that I have become a bit lazy recently and instead of resharpening every time have just stuck a new chain on. I have loads of chains per saw now and need to do a bulk sharpening. Is there a quick set up you can have where you dont have to put chain on the saw to sharpen. I know its not exaclty time consuming to put each one back on the saw but I like saving time.
  18. Some one has given me an old robust 12v winch which I will put on my defender not powerful enough for unimog. Any one tell me how to wire it up before I blow my defender electrics. Got the relays clicking but not the motor turning. Had the motor turning 3 months ago but cant remember how.
  19. I treated my landy chassis with stuff called por 15 check out http://www.frost.co.uk. They sell some weird spray stuff that you apply on your chassis first that disolves rust and then leaves a Zinc Phosphate coating. You then add por 15 resin on the top and you can hit it with a hammer and it won't crack! I applied mine 2-3 years ago and its still mint. Problem with Land Rovers obviously is that they use box section instead of channel profile and so need to get inside the with some thing. I ended up drilling a few extra holes to get a load of the resin inside the box section. If only they made a Land Rover Chassis like a Unimog.
  20. Got 5 x 50-70ft Poplars to take down at back of residence in West Lancs area, need a speedy climber to share the work with. Good dollar shall be given. If any one replies tonight I shall only get the post tomorrow morning beacuse its obvioulsy time to go to the local boozer for the evening.
