  1. Well, supposed to persist it down this weekend but never happened. Also supposed to rain today but all we got was a little drizzle. Fire is turned down low and I'm sat here in shorts and singlet...........again. Snow is melting rapidly off the mountains too. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Haha, you can't leave the weather alone eh Jon? At the moment it's fine but we are due rain today or tomorrow. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. After we scrapped the SaaB we weren't going to bother with another vehicle but this cropped up at a good price and I'm a sucker for big thirsty European motors. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Steel waratah Probably used as a planting stake around 25-30 years ago and then never removed. Don't you just love that? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. AirNZ premium economy. Pay the extra, it's the old business class.
  6. No idea stubby. Could have got it wrong and it might be vege oil we have been using. Its Bio degradeable and smells funky when it gets hot. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. One of my Managers, good fella, hit a cow one night. Went through his wind screen and nearly took his head off. Had one side of his face rebuilt. I've seen similar in Oz and Roo bars do work but I don't see the point in urban areas. They are more a danger than saviour. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. If you've ever hit a Roo then you know these things prevent a massive fix it bill Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. It is bro and its never let me down. Had to have the head done on it a couple years ago but purchase price was $8k after pretty much full rebuild of the main bearing, clutch etc by Asplundh. still blows people away just how fast it eats branches. It's also built like a tank. Couldn't afford a bandit but needed something with some grunt that wasn't on the verge of wrecking. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  10. I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. Sometimes I think I'm just classed as a chainsaw hack rather than a skilled professional. After all, it is only a tree. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Replaced under warranty by our friendly local Stihl dealer. Apparently they rand Stihl who reckoned they'd never heard of the problem, here or in the UK. They still sorted it though so we've got the little rev and rip back on the Jon tomorrow. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. Maybe we should have a new thread for the abused, butchered and poisoned council trees. We have heaps of them all around the district. Some carried out by our own employees and some by local residents. Can you just imagine if we walked in to their gardens and started hacking at their rosé bushes, shrubs and trees? 13. Started using some kind of mineral oil as bar oil. Supposedly good stuff, all the forestry gangs using it. Our husky packed up oiling until we changed back to the old variety and some of our other saws look a bit dry. Personally to convinced yet. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Freebie for a good mate. Pensioners day out (all of us 40+). Elm tree to rig down in a reasonably tight area with 3 fences, 3 garages a shed and a couple of shrubs. Turned out to be a cracking winter day. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. I don't want to ask..........do I? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. I've heard of mulch treeseer but there are two of us to cover the entire district. That's too manage the tree asset, deal with the paper work, service requests, meetings and then we have the actual pruning, removals etc thrown on top just for good measure. The district is a decent size. End to end, over a 100kms. We mulch new plantings when we put them in (yes we do the planting too) but we don't have time to keep up with trees that were planted last year or prior to that. The mulch around the trees we have done usually gets driven over by the mowers. Not having time to remulch them means they're fair game for those with strimmers once he mowing crews have dealt to them. I watched one guy drive straight over the mulch and into the tree. To be fair, every council is different but I don't think you are aware of the complacency of the mowing crews here. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. Just had the needle bearing go on our 261 and it's less than 6 months old. Power to weight it's fantastic but starting to get a little concerned reading these reviews. We are also looking at the 550 and 560 as we are trying to trade in our 595xp which spends far too much time in the shop. looks like a new husky might be the go but is the 560 or 550 that much better than the 261? After the issues we have had recently with the 595 I'm a little cautious about having another Husky.
  18. I checked out some reviews on them and they weren't favourable. Issues with the water proofing and stitching mainly. I've had two pairs of Meindles and they have been excellent. If you're predominantly on the ground though, the soles will wear quite quickly. I have just bought a pair of the Stein Phantoms which seem OK so far although not as warm and comfy as the Meindles.
  19. That's one of the problems old mill. We spent a whole day training most of the guys and explaining the issues they cause with strimmers and mowers. The respect part, now there's the problem. They just don't give a monkeys. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. Sorry, just bothered to look at the photo. I can relate to this too. We had the same problem with our guys. Now we don't allow them to trim the trees except one guy that showed enough interest that he now works on the crew with us. For the rest; they are happy to strim the living day lights out of the bark or run over them with the ride on mowers.watch one guy take half the bark off with his strimmer the other day. 21. Eh? For real? Council employees nailing their own trees. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Outstanding idea Old Mill.
  23. Couple more from today. Should have this clump done and dusted tomorrow and then around the corner for the last one. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. Check with Rich at Treetools. He seems to be a fountain of local knowledge. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. I can completely relate to that sentiment Difflock. Ill build a house behind these trees but now they block my view so I want them gone. What! You won't cut them down for me? Right, ill take to them myself. District wide too. We are currently worrying about the possibility of Turangi's 3500 or so trees maybe having to come down because the locals don't like cleaning the leaves up. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
