Your point being? I haven't seen the video as apparently we can't get it in our area (no idea why not) but I took my Dad out all the time with me. He had steel toe cap boots and hi viz vest and would potter about moving wood and dragging branches. He didn't want paying he just did it to keep fit and spend some time with me. Nowt wrong with that in my opinion as long as he does as he's told so he doesn't put himself in danger. -

Not really, only one or two jobs out of it. Most of the rest is being done by roading contractors or utility company crews. Most of these have their own in house crews along with heavy machinery so I don't really get a look in.

Agreed there Lancsmike. Thought about branding but decided against it as it wouldn't stand out under the body hair. The wife's looks choice though. It changes colour depending on her body temperature and that of the surrounding air. Blue, pink, red, allsorts.

A little bit of Ta Moko for ya. Took 4 hours per calf. The second picture is the wife's. A dragonfly tatt on one forearm with the mirror imagage on the other but branded. She reckoned it was way more painful than being tattood. You have to look carefully cos it doesn't come out that well on photos.

Jammy bugger. Weekend in Sydney sounds OK to me. Mind you, if I was competing it'd take me all weekend to get up the first tree.

Bro, not sure which was worse (probably the earthquakes in all fairness) but it sure did blow. Strange thing was at the top end of the lake you could have surfed. Halfway down the lake was flat calm. Way wierd. Still blowing a bit but it came with a vengence yesterday.

No one hurt fortunately but cars crushed and power lines down EVERYWHERE!. Talked to a couple of friends who work for utility companies and they reckon that 11KV, 33KV and power poles were dropping like flies. One mate sat and watched tops snapping out of trees left right and centre.

Just read the contract for the job. 4 weeks leave per annum going up to 5 after three years continuous service. 10 days sick per year acruing to a maximum of 60 days. 3 days special leave at xmas (paid). Private health insurance plus pension fund. Doesn't sound so bad now. and they don't mind me still doing my own jobs at the weekend. My main concern is that I don't end up shoved behind a desk as after getting back in to the physical stuff when I went self employed I find I enjoy it way more than being stuck in a vehicle or office all day (despite being 40+). Thanks for all the support to guys, made me decision way easier.

The weather report said a cold front was moving in bringing rain and showers. Mother nature showed up and she was packing big time. Gale force winds brought down power lines, trees etc and ripped off roofs. A mate told me he watched trees on the edge of a pine plantation topple like dominoes bringing down an 11KV and blocking off the State Highway. Power was out to about 24,000 homes around the local region (except us cos the local power board removes trees next to power lines )

The third picture looks like some kinda alien out of a dreamworks film. All it needs is eyes. The fourth looks like one of my dogs paid it a visit.

Cheers guys. Still keeping the business name going and the Council are happy for me to do my own stuff at the weekends. Several of my good customers have already said they're happy for me to work saturdays etc for them so should be able to get some extra income. Things have just got so much tighter over the last year or so. One local council drags me all over the area to look at jobs and give them advice only to give the work to other outfits. I spent four days, two tanks of fuel, several hours of phone calls and report writing, organising of timber yards etc on one job only for them to use all the info I gave them on another outfit. Just trying to convince myself I haven't given up without giving the business a real go.

Man, there's some doozies there. Never get tired of looking at the new pictures put up and the outstanding quality of them. Ian, something most majestic about falcons and owls. Would love to know someone into falconry just so I could get up close and personal with one. -
After 4 years of being self employed (and struggling most months to make ends meet) I got offered an arborists position at the local council. The job entails part office work and part maintenance of the Council's trees. I thought long and hard about my decision but, taking into consideration my ever increasing costs, age etc, decided to go for the council job and give up on the self employed lifestyle. I'm still not entirely convinced I've done the right thing but must admit the security of regular wages does offset that somewhat. Have I done the right thing?

Cheers Ian. This is about my third try at it. Hoping to get myself on a photography course towards the end of May. Got a long way to go before I get anywhere near some of the other efforts I've seen on here though. Very much an inspiration to get my backside out there and try something new.

Works for Unison bro but had him out to do some climbing for me the other day and helped him out with some stuff at his place on Friday. The student has become the teacher. Hoping to get out with him some time and learn some tricks from him as he has picked up some pretty good ideas. All well and good seeing it on here but actually being there and seeing it done live makes it easier to learn, especially for an old fossil like me. I think Unison are pretty good with the gear too so he's hoping to pick up a decent harness and boots but his bag is full of shiny shiny stuff. Reckon he was a magpie in a former life.

Mason W showed me something like this at the weekend. Not sure if it was the same thing but highly likely if it was he got it from you. Allright for you fancy pants out there getting your gear paid for by the boss
