Don't assume just because the leaves brown off and drop that the tree is dead. They are quite capable of throwing new shoots out of the trunk and stems (along the entire length) during the next growing season. Happens quite often here to an avenue of them either side of the State Highway.

Had the same problem. Got through three different screens and no prices. Looks like some good kit from what I can see but they need to sort out the website.

Don't blow yourself a new foofoo valve. Used when trying to lift something way too heavy or pulling on something way too stuck. Usually followed by a small exertion fart from the person the statement is directed at. And you all know those little ones sneak out when your lifting too much.

Mate, if your lass is only slightly built I'd be getting her off to an arb supplier to try a few out. Nothng worse than getting something you think is right and finding out it rubs on the bones etc. Even a xs size harness could be damn uncomfortable. Better off making the time to let her try a few and get it right first time. And YOU KNOW she'll probably want the most expensive one in the shop, especially if she's anything like my missus. Not sure about highland forestry's choice and how comfortable that might be

Bog standard Nokia. Thought about a smart phone but don't use the features I have on this one so not much point. I wish I could get a phone with a decent size key pad though as with by big shaved chimp thumbs I end up hitting about 3 keys at once when I'm texting.

Thought it was a bit of a joke meself until I did a bit of web searching. Couple of cars flipped over and their roofs caved in, the roof ripped right off pack and scab and place makers, a whole heap of trees toppled onto cars. It was actually worse than I thought.

Give the Eucs a chance. They are amazingly resilient and may well start putting out new shoots when they feel good and ready. I've seen them in Oz having been hit by forest fires and still resprouting. Unfortunately a lot of them in NZ are being hit by the Gum leaf skeletonizer.

Same here. I refuse to take money until the job is done but then I wish some people would cough up a little more promptly when the job has been completed to their satisfaction. Unfortunately it isn't always a two way street. Still, I'll hold firm to my principle of not accepting payment until the job's one.

For real? I didn't crticise your post I asked the question as to what was wrong with taking your old man or lady to site. Fair enough if they're faffing around underneath but they only need to be told to keep out of the way and watch. There is definately the A horizon ( all new to me) but you can see in places that it is only a couple of inches deep. There are several layers of Ash deposit which can be seen along several parts of road cutting. It depends how far away from the major eruptions you get and in which direction you travel but you don't have to dig far to reach it. Most of the ash deposits run right out to the coast and in some places the Waikato river has carved its way through the same deposits. The King country is well known for its good crop land but it still needs to be limed to keep the soil PH up. The ash deposits themselves look like sedimentary rock with distinquishable layers visble from each eruptive deposit.

Well a quick search seems to indicate Ph levels of around 5.6 acorss the areas farms.

Sorry Hama, off the top of my head I wouldn't know. I'll do some sleuthing and get back to you on that one unless Drew knows. The Pumice here can be up to 100 feet deep in places from eruptions from Taupo caldera and the other volcanoes in the area. Apart from the top soil the rest (sub soil) is just grey pumice in most places. seems to make good farming but it's easy for water to wash it away. The local rivers are dirty grey after good rains because of the wash off. Auckland is built on a different type of volcano (about 52 of them I think) but still has issues with poor soils in many places with much of the city being built on old lava flows.

Same problem down here, especially around Taumarunui. Pumice gets washed away really easily and undermining occurs where trees are anywhere near a water run off. The water will usually scour away under the roots (which never seem to form properly either) and then over she goes. Everytime it rains down here there's slips and trees over.

You'd have to count me out being on this side of the world and all that but a most excellent idea it is. Anything to help catch some of the thieving gits. Good sales pitch for Gotek too.

Good info onetruth; clear and concise. Some of the gangs here (such as The Mongrel Mob) have taken up debt collecting. They charge a standard fee from what I understand of X amount of dollars plus a percentage. Works out about the same as some of the bigger collection agencies such as Baycorp. Hell, if a couple of tattood hairy ass patched up mob members turned up on my door step to collect an outstanding debt I don't think I'd spend too long arguing.

Slightly derailing the thread for a minute but I think it's great that you can take the old man out to show him what you do. I spent ages during the school holidays at my Dad's garage and now he likes to come out and spend time with me. The more time I can spend with my old man the better.
