  1. trouble is i'm so sad that i do remember job, price and even phone number most of the time:scared1: but can i f**k remember to put my wheelie bin out on a thursday night!!
  2. ditto,i give them 30 or 60 days depending on job, some still ring after 2 years about the same job!!
  3. my sentiments exactly,am i missing something here
  4. but even on the phone their 50ft ash is more often than not a 25ft maple when you get there!
  5. its mostly caused by pure jealousy, sad but its the truth.i usually find knocking on neighbours door first thing, explaining about imminent noise, dust, parking etc usually sets them straight from the off,and can also bring in a few "keep up with the jones's" jobs
  6. trust me the 88 is top dog....just take a fuel bowser with you if its gotta work all day:scared1:
  7. as i don't own but hire chippers this one always makes me think.6" chipper hired all week or brash stacked and bigger chipper hired for a day or two? i have a large leylandii job on the horizon (good access) and could keep my one labourer ticking over all day on a 6" timberwolf, the job would take 4 days.are bigger chippers that much quicker if i just dropped it all in 2 days and went for a chipfest on day three? is this swings and roundabouts?
  8. just to refresh my thread, still looking for a terrier, cheers, steve
  9. as ayoung man (18) i rushed down to kent with a gang i'd just started out cutting pulp for (200 quid a week) on the promise of untold riches, production was plentiful, worked 12hr days, one good week, market flooded, went home to discover father had sold 4x200 hoppus ft burr elms for £10 cube, did the maths and decided its not who you know, its what you know
  10. spot on mr ed,subbed to a guy who had their work,5yrs ago,f**king nearly ruined me,still owes me to this day:thumbdown:

    Stihl four mix

ditto on that, just bought a hl75 4mix hedge trimmer off mr jones, thought it wasn't running properly for a start! cuts sweet though:001_smile:
  19. i think its a sign of the times too, last few years people would probably rather pay the "lowly woodman" to barrow or stack it rather than get their hands dirty, this winter of discontent they will be out there in the green wellies and barbour to save a tenner towards the extortionate mortgage and energy bills!
  20. to avoid barrowing my missus tells them on the phone its tipped off but can be barrowed for £10 cubic metre, not barrowed a load for 4 years!
  21. 6-8",8-10",10-12" stockpiled for me,little old ladies with council house grates love the small ones, pain really but you keep the trade for years! other sizes cut to order,i have one bloke has 3ft logs for a huge inglenook, not many of them to the lb! i agree with firewoodman about pleasing people, alot turn their nose up when you tip a load of seasoned wood on the drive and bark falls off,i know a bloke sells nothing but green sycamore, oak, beech etc, looks lovely on the truck, not so good on the fire
  22. 8.5 hours of work (forget about breaks, as by law, you are entitled to breaks, all part of a working day) at £23.53 per hour. Do you have other people out working for you, whilst you are doing your round? If so, between each of you are you bringing in enough to meet your daily expenditure (overheads, expenses, purchases), and, preferably, exceed the total outgoings so you make a profit? If the answer is yes, then your £200 is a viable price. i use casual guys 3 days appx weekly, rest of the week i'm out on my own doing hedges, fencing and logs.i rent a small yard for a tenner a week and keep overheads as low as i can.hedge trimming IMO is alot easier, less stressful and pound note plentiful than anything else i do so i'm satisfied with 200 quid, just got me thinking when the bolshy customer said it,and also my missus reckons it sounds cheap (what does she know?!!)
  23. i do it alot (sorry) i consider myself good at it (sorry again) get well and confident soon jason:001_smile:
  24. about 300 quid on e bay new.my sister lives in idaho and is supposed to be getting her finger out to get me one and send it (£160 equivalent).perhaps we should set up an arbtalk lobby and pressure STIHL to sell them here.......but if we did i suppose they would be £400ish
