  1. you ever been to boise masterblaster? my sis lives there and keeps trying to drag me over,can't imagine much to do there? (apart from pick up a cheap 192t)

  3. off on a tangent,is it true(having never been to college)that it can harm a tree heavily choked in ivy to remove it?
  4. to be honest i try to recommend others and dont really want the job,just seem to get asked more these days so weighing up the odds
  5. thanks arbormaster,hired several now,last one was a hawk? honda engine,liked its juice but did the job ok,can you recommend a model/dealer?
  6. mushrooms aint hard to do,less than ten minutes when you get the hang,trouble i found was i boasted about them to friends and family,and the first dozen i did were payed for in "just get me a pint mate" and i lost the will to continue!!
  7. ok,i obviously pass the 120 quid on to the customer at current hire rates,if you own the machine (or hp it)is the tendency to just add a few quid on per stump/hour,price the stumps seperately etc? suppose i'm asking will it just provide a service or make me a profit?
  8. weighing up the pros and cons of owning a stump grinder.maybe use one once a month(hired at 120 quid).would appreciate all experienced opinions,thinking if i had one in the armoury maybe could charge more/do a quicker and thorough job,but what about maintenance? another bit of kit to hump around? desirable to thieves? longevity and re-sale value? best model and place to buy? fill me in guys,thanks,steve
  9. i'm looking to buy in too steve,all things point to a busy season this winter.why is it hardwood pulp can be reasonably priced,but when you mention/or class as firewood the price mysteriously creeps up?!! steve

  11. when quoting for a job some months ago at a quakers church my first question on the old graveyard trees was about any T P O's,to which the man of the cloth replied "fell now and repent later,the lord will forgive you!!" If the cap fits and all that....i walked away
  12. having been in firewood many years i use a simple yearly system of winter felling/coppice,cut and split in 4 feet lengths,stacked bark side up on strong pallets and as high as i can get it,processed in august/september and immediately barn stored loose,anything that aint quite dry gets re-stacked for next year,sometimes run out in feb but get no complaints

  14. i was taught by chauvinistic,sexist,hairy,pipe smoking men(with danarms and pioneers)1/3 diameter gob at 60 degrees(ish)bore out the middle then 1" step per foot of diameter (e.g 4' elm,4" step)never lost one yet(although i have become hairy and sexist!)

  16. i suppose its all individual experience,they still have all the same staff pretty much for years,they used to fall over to help,now they seem more interested in fish,shame
  17. it is garden machines,used them for years and there customer service of late sucks
  18. memory is selective,halcyon days when a gallon of 2 stroke was 2 quid (1989)and a pint was less than a quid,it was relative,i bought my first new saw on tick then,pay cash now(but admittedly drink less beer!)
  19. reminds me of the pink floyd song 'time',i do have to say that if your life seems to be passing you by, its because your living it to the full and are content with your lot,dont take any regrets with you wether you die at 50 or 100
  20. the old boys right david,dunno your age,guessing your thirtysomething,i'm 37 and had similar advice a few years ago from a terminally ill colleague,his words still drive me on now,no substitute for experience,good post,steve
  21. my grandad used to tell me robin hood's campfires burnt the inside of the oaks,bugger!
  22. the thinking on this one is surely anything that burns well will burn when struck by lightning,things like lombardy,cherry etc wont even burn then
  23. the dead one was first on the trailer,i dragged it off for the nice young lady to take pictures,then explained the other,she called me a pro,i called her one too

  25. can we swap tree officers? yesterday i was stopped clearing elder(YES ELDER!),a dead spruce and 2 50ft leylandii due to conservation area,give me strength
