  1. jesus dean is he polish?!!! i have to pay my casual bloke (2-3 days weekly) 70 quid and buy him 2 pints of fosters! I have a gardener colleague who charges £15 hour, works 10 hours 7 days and does alright for himself in a small radius of home...makes ya think
  2. i may start thinking about the hourly thing, maybe easier to quote new customers that over the phone rather than keep dragging myself out miles at dusk to find a 6ft high leylandii thats 15ft long (20 minute job) and having to go back! i prefer price work (especially when alone) because i obviously get stuck in,isn't there a tendency to "drag it out a bit" if on an hourly rate?
  3. i get what your saying dean,i regularly pull in say a ton for 2 hours trimming but surely if your there all day they aint going to pay £480 for 8 hours at £60,they will for tree work i know, but i find alot view hedge trimming as "garden work"?
  4. ok,honest opinions appreciated on this one guys.i know pricing can vary from region to region, circumstances, staff, insurances, overheads etc etc so i thought i'd ask the question.I have a hedge trimming round which takes up about 3 days a fortnight of my time, today i worked 9-5.30 in one garden doing beech and conifer hedges(same drill twice a year) on my tod.including about 20-30 wheelbarrow loads of clippings disposal i charged the bloke 200 quid,he 's a bit showy/arrogant and likes to flash his cash and says i'm too cheap! i'm happy with that sort of money for a hardly tiring day, what do you guys think and charge yourselves? cheers, steve
  5. ditto,we did a large acacia last week and the deadwood was stronger and less brittle than the live, strange but true
  6. getting the hang a bit guys,ta.who does the inspecting? (not cernearb electrics i hope...joke)
  7. i would post this on a home electrics forum if i knew one but you lads always seem to have answers to everything so here goes.built my shed/workshop at the bottom of the garden months ago and still need to wire it up.have buried an armoured cable all the way and into utility room up to consumer unit.trouble is i don't have a free breaker thingy and am stuck.conflicting advice from getting a bigger unit to adding another to doubling up on one.also been told it needs to be checked/passed etc i assume for insurance etc.please help,i'm in the dark...literally.steve
  8. joke you may james but that may just be the answer! heat the bolts up mate, usually works:001_smile:
  9. i play zookeeper on 2flashgames,its terribly frustrating and very addictive (and my mrs beats me)
  10. i'll back you up a bit jamie lad!! when i bore i start off at not full revs till the saw finds it way in.with bigger old trees it can quite often go straight into rot so its a case of each tree differently approached for me
  11. sometimes this kind of action is the only way.i have spent all afternoon today driving round three customers houses to attempt collection of dues,i think the current economic climate is affecting this, two of the three are good acquaintances in the building trade, but if they haven't got the money then don't call me in for the work, not my idea of a sunday but it had to be done.having experience of the last recession i think there will be alot more of this in the coming months, possibly years,be careful lads
  12. thats pip, she's 8 months now and as i say she's got hip and knee problems so the missus has claimed her.my father had one and when he shot ducks it would fetch them out of the river (more a job for a lab!) they're hard as nails and soft as s**t at the same time.i thought about just getting a cheap terrier cross or even a jack as i too have rats in the firewood yard:scared1:
  13. thing is you get attached,my last border went to bed, work and pub with me.i'll look up the fell, heard of them but can't picture
  14. would he ring you?
  15. after years of having a faithful hound at my side and protecting the van,i find myself a bit lonely and finding it hard to get hold of a good terrier pup.bought a kc registered border pup which has turned out to have hip displacure and wonky knees, therefore rendered the missus lap dog (gutted).i have a barn filled with firewood and lots of rats, and a crippled border and a brainless chocolate labrador just aint gonna scare them! if anyone knows of a good terrier going please let me know, will consider anything, jack russell, border, cross etc, prefer a bitch and willing to travel.thanks, steve
  16. cutting high is where you lost it mr bish, respect for your honesty though
  17. i see quite a few like this (rarely as spectacular)and normally ash.i think years of spraying and burning have alot to answer for,or at least the farmers do
  18. guys i may enlighten you or bore you now,but here goes;apart from the odd cheap husqvarna dealer offers (262's and 357's they couldn't sell) in 20 years i have always bought stihl and ran them from new to death, from 026's through 036.044,66 and 88's.always ran them on stihl 50:1,however,last couple of years i find myself putting 5 litre oil measure in the can but only 4 litres of unleaded, dont ask me why, just instinct.recently my local dealer ran out of 2 stroke but gave me stihl HP two stroke oil, mixed it 50:1,my kit suddenly runs crap, smells and cuts out,i personally think its a fine line and the odd bit of extra oil don't hurt, better to be safe than sorry
