  15. whatever floats the proverbial boat i suppose when it comes to splitting wood.personally i don't disagree with any choices of axe/maul quoted but i do think most of it is in the technique,i think splitting wood is like sharpening saws and thatching roofs(random),you think you're good at it but 10 years later you realise you're even better
  16. when i first read this thread i thought "no,no,no" don't drop your prices or canvass for work out of desperation or credit crunch! however around the same time i also started a thread on "who's working over christmas?".I have rarely dropped my prices apart from the odd back scratching job or foot in the door,so imagine my surprise (at myself) when i found myself quoting the local farm shop a very cheap price to reduce their conifers (40ft high,30m long) looking to busy myself over the holiday.i make no bones i quoted 200 quid a day with a groundie and farmer disposes of stuff, estimate of 3-4 days, short days they will be.trouble is i don't want him telling all i'm cheap (because i aint) and i don't want him knocking my door in march pinning me on the same price,i suppose the moral of my story would be its nice to be busy over the holiday, but any fool can be busy,i should have quoted him a "proper" price, take it or leave it,like he does for his sausages!!

    Teabaggin'

made tea in a flask goes rank about dinnertime,i can't be bothered to take seperate tea bags, milk etc so i do this:1,stainless steel flask preheated with boiling water 2,china teapot preheated with boiling water 3,make teapot with 2 pg tips 4,fill flask with tea and very little milk and no sugar 5,do not open flask at all until 9am 6,tea stays hot and tea-like till about 2pm 7,if the customer makes you one? bonus!
  24. thanks bill, although i do find split oak dries quicker than ash.ash looks dry but you get that tell tale "pinkness" within 5 mins of sawing it,after years of experience i can tell how dry it is by the residue each species leaves on my sawbench blade, how sad am i?!!
