  4. i rent a concrete hard standing and barn off a local farmer, tenner a week,i,m starting to take up more and more space with wood stacks, kit etc so recently offered him double out of courtesy.he said don't worry about it.the respect goes both ways,i do a few odd jobs for him and have offered a hand if needed at harvest, think he's also glad to have another set of eyes round the place too.farmer's can be funny buggers but got on the right side of good to know

  12. whenever my old fella set someone new on clearing up behind us felling elms and ash etc in hedgerows,he would always tell them to gather up and keep old knots and burrs he'd cut off,but only one's with holes in the middle "valuable they are boy" he used to say.after collecting a considerable pile intrigue would always get the better of them. "what they for then?" the newbie would say "arseholes for rocking horses boy!!"

  20. reminds me of an incident i had a few years ago in my old yard.i used to rent 100yds of a disused railway line off a farmer friend for firewood storage, ideal, hard down the middle, stack either side and open to the wind to dry it well, only problem was a public footpath straight through the middle of it,still a mile or so from civilisation so not heavily trafficked.started losing probably 1/2 cube a week so struck up an agreement with the cowman who lived 100yds away to keep an eye out,in return he had free wood for his pot bellied stove.the steady flow of theft continued,he just couldn't catch anyone at it.after about 3 winters of this i discovered it was him nicking it,bagging it and selling it wholesale to the village garage!!!
