1. Exactly: Transports Friend - Authorisation of Special Types (General Order 2003) - STGO No way timber haulage would comply with STGO requirements unless it was a single large trunk. Even then most timber trailers only have two or three axles, usually 9t each, thats not enough for most STGO from memory. A
2. this is better: http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/pdf/A-Simplified-Guide-to-Lorry-Types-and-Weights.pdf Biggest gross weight is 44 tonnes, that includes the weight of the truck and trailer. Timber weight will depend on vech but likely to be 23-27 tonnes. £500 for a load is still very good value. A
3. You are all talking about camera vans. Be aware that Gatso type fixed location cameras can be fitted with a tall attachment, this measures the height of the passing vechicle. Anything tall gets flashed if over 40mph on a single carriageway. There were some down in Devon a few years ago when I was last down there. Friend of mind driving a 38 ton curtainsider was keeping up with the traffic, all they cars went by the camera at about 45mph no problem, but he got flashed and done as his speed limit is 40mph. So if you ever see a two very tall posts beside a fixed speed camera thats what it is. A
4. Hydrogen given off by the battery has been ignited by a spark from a loose connector on the pos terminal. Had 42 years in the motor trade before I sold out, 20 + of which was as a Bosch dealer selling batteries. Saw a few do that but not many, usually the cell at the positive end of the battery. 9 year old battery has done well to get that far. A
5. 10tons per hour, say 15 cube, 8 hour day, thats 120 cube a day, say 100 to cover stoppages etc. You must be selling a hell of a volume to require that much throughout. A
6. Thats because there is a huge variation in quality. Some want twice the combustible clearance of others. Some require wire support after 1.5 meters, some can go 3 meters from the last support. We only install Poujoulat, expensive but very very good. A
7. Another issue you may not have considered is time !!. The firewood season kicks off properly in early September, at that time you will up to your backside with combining and autumn cultivations. Last thing you will want is the phone ringing off the hook with firewood orders that need delivering unless you have a delivery driver. Mind you if you don't start selling till November you should get a better price as the cheapo boys have mainly sold out. A
8.
Good man. I did get the mail but have had to close a couple of my work addresses as they got hit by spam bots.

9. Some years ago we were advised of a HMRC check. I got everything arranged, all books and paperwork for last 7 years, company secretary on site for the day etc. 4pm the day before he cancels. Why?, from his office he has to take public transport to get to me, that involves 3 bus journeys, leaving at 7am on the first bus from his town the earliest he can get to me was midday, he would then have to leave at 1pm to get back by 6pm. Seems they are not allowed to use cars, either pool or private. he promised to come back another time but never did. Mind you there was absolutely nothing for him to find anyway, fiddling tax is a mugs game. in 22 years in business plus 4 in my new business post retirement I have had one VAT audit, thats it. But I do use a very good ( and expensive) accountant who makes sure all is in order and the boxes are ticked etc. A I cant see that situation getting any easier for HMRC despite the threats.
10. Agreed. A
11.
Sold the first one Saturday.

12. I am close to Long Buckby, to far for regular drops but bear me in mind if working in the area and Timberdelf has had what he wants. A
13. All this sounds like someone is filling a container for export. A
14. That they do, I recon mine are stretching 300mm each side in the middle, so average 150mm per side, that makes a bag about 1.2 cube !!. Some of my bags have done 10+ cycles. A
15. [ Agreed, I send out an 8 page document I write myself on using a new stove as all have their slight differences. Got called in to look at one we installed in the summer last night, customer complaining fire is burning but he he has no heat coming out of it. Homeowner is shoving Eucalyptus and other garden shrub type timbers on it un split and all pretty recently felled. Black glass as well so no secondary air being used. Cleaned it up, lit it up and piled some nice dry Ash and Syc on it and away it went. And thats after he has had a six page document on the ins and out of firewood. I size all my stoves on their maximum heat output, that ensures customers have to work them hard all the while, so no tars, good flame patterns and comfortably warm not roasting. A
16. How would you load a 26t load of that?, bulk walking floor I assume. Or are you saying buyer collects and has that issue?. A
17. Makes little difference unless the bark has fallen off it. This time last year I was processing Ash and Syc for sale this winter, in had been in a stack for 18 months. Fresh felled the MC was about 35%, when processed 25%, acceptable for most due to ignorance but nowhere dry enough for optimum results. A
18. Been reading another thread about how long you lads keep your stoves running by shutting them right down. When you shut a stove down you are telling it to release heat that would usually be released over an hour to so to release that heat over say 9 hours. As a result the temperature within the stove drops significantly. Now most if not all wood contains creosote, this is given off in gas form and is normally combusted in the firebox where it makes a good contribution to the heat output. However if the temperature within the firebox drops below the combustion point of the creosote it wont burn but instead gets up into the chimney where it condenses and liner the chimney with tar. At some point it is then possible that you may have a chimney fire. So my question to those of you with non defra stoves who burn wood on log overnight burns, do you get any tar in the chimney?. Be surprised if not but if not what woods are you burning to achieve this. ( Defra stoves are usually set up in such a way to prevent the operator from shutting them right down, thats when pollution occurs). The other issue is that shutting the stove down reduces the air flow across the inside of the door leading to claggy glass next day, the new fire will burn that off but it will take a while. Personally in my 8kw stove I load big lumps of Ash at 10.30pm and shut it down by about 20%, any more and its dirty glass. At 6am my stove is no more than warm. For extra heat I pop a few handfuls of smokeless coal into the back corners, stove is then to hot to touch at 6am and raking those coals into the centre of the firebox restarts the fire when kindling is added. I do have customers with Esse Ironhearts with the wood box option, you can load a lot of wood in that, users tell me that they burn overnight easily. Customers with 5kw stoves have to use smokeless fuel or smokeless coal for long burns. I have several 5kw stoves that I have sold that run 24-7 from Sept through to May on smokeless. So anyone have tar issues?. A
19. Thats a Morso Squirrel, 40 year life if looked after. In its was world leading, parts are easily available if needed. A
20. Telewag poles would be crerosoted, no smell of crerosoted but did have a bit of smell that i usually associate with Scots Pine ( or maybe Cedar, just dawned on me !!!!) when cut. This timber was a mix of 2 trunks from different species and smaller timber down to about 8 inch diameter. I suspect the trees were planted or seeded when a railway line next door was built, they were taken down when they were is danger of falling across said railway line. Anyone any experience burning dry cedar?. A
21. Actually I have not checked it !!!, feels dry though. Will check it tomorrow. In burns like the clappers, couple of small logs in an 8kw stove and the firebox is filled with flame. I will take some pics in the morning if my phone is not playing up, keeps telling me the card is full. A
22. Dont have a name but think there is a guy around Nottingham area that could help with a 8x4. A
23. GME springs in Coventry may be able to help. In my days in the motor trade they did a few upgrade kits for that size of vechicle. A
24. I had similar thoughts myself, A|
25. Sell it in Classic Tractor magazine, there is a section for attachments. I would think £100 or so. A
