  1. UNLESS... Unless you move to France and exchange your licence for a French one. I did last year to my joy:001_cool: Ty
  2. I also found that a big ball ache of doing the work ourselves was the use of toothed belt rather than V belts which are simpler to set up and far less expensive. Toothed belt took alot of time to aligne correctly to run in the middle of the pulleys. A slight shift to one side and a tendance to rub on a pulley edge meant a shorter life span. We swapped the 4012s purge bearings for sealed units as the bearings tended to purge grease into the toothed belt housing. Ty
  3. I would work out the machine costings like this. Purchase price 30'000 depreciated over 5 years = 6000 per year. Say machine 2 years old £6000/265hrs = £23 depreciation per hour. Bearings and belts every 500hrs = Other damage/wear = Fuel per hour = Average tooth wear per hour = Time per hour non-grinding/travel/maintenance = Associated costs such as vehicule/publicity/insurance = Resale value after 5 years = Ty
  4. That was good, ours was at the lower end of normal hours/wear. I had bought in a belt but decided to have the machine converted to metric bearings which are a saving over the imported imperial sizes. Ty
  5. How many hours did you put on the machine Stefan? Our Carlton 4012 got to 450hrs before we detected bearing wear by putting a metal bar through the wheel and rocking it. Normal lifespan. Bearings worn but smooth. Ty
  6. Hello, Does anyone know of a U.K supplier of box section alloy planks? Cheers Ty
  7.

  8. Hah! I started with plywood greedy boards on a Daxara baggage trailer. I look back and shake my head in wonderment... Ty
  9. TBH Toby I didn't get a name. I'm also borrowing a mates until I source a cheap one. Sent from my SM-G935F using Arbtalk mobile app
  10. Royston Resources have a container of 500 Alaskan copies due in 6-8 weeks. Ty
  11. If you are unemployed or claiming working tax credits you may well find the course is still free. Ty
  12. Fencing after grinding a hedge out is a bit of an arse TBH. Jobs where we've ragged out the hedge with a winch and mattock have been easier on the post hole front. Ty
  13. Lumag sell direct. lumag-maschinen-shop.de The 15hp chipper is only 1895 euros inc.vat or around 1600 sterling. Worth a punt at that price. Ty
  14. My pet hates being. Leaving the windows down or doors open whilst chipping or when raining. Driving like a hoon and getting the wingmirrors smashed on other hoons drivers wingmirrors. Not taking off filthy gloves before moving truck. Leaving food packaging in door pockets. We bought a used 2008 Iveco in 2012 for around £9k plus vat Returned to the U.K for it as the savings where around 40% over used trucks here. We've needed to change the rear bearings each side, clutch and it eats front tyres due to being overloaded so often and rear ones as we forget to check the pressures but in 5 years it really has been good to us. It had a diff replacement before we bought it which was an eye watering sum. 10-12 litres per 100km. I think we have been fairly lucky in terms of repairs. However, I have never been able to instill in my team any sense of ownership and pride in the vehicles we have. Ty
  15. What does that MOG do to it's owners? Haemorrhage their bank accounts? Ty
  16. Does that mean your selling the mog...? Ty
  17. Our nightmare 4012 had a string of problems stemming from pressure washing which had caused water ingress into poorly protected areas. However, these where compounded by some simple toggle switches on the remote control box itself which wear out quite fast as well as the red stop button which also has a short life. These items, not cheap mind, are an utter ballache to source in Europe except from the machines dealers. Last stop switch cost 100 euros! Ty
  18. I spiked a lime with 12 stems near Dreux. It was summer, raining, the stems covered in a green algae. I couldn't reach a suitable branch with the throwline as the canopy was so thick so we used a 3 stage ladder and I spiked the rest of the way to my anchor point. Cobra bracing was to be installed. I used large strops around the stems whilst positioning but to do all 12 stems in a day (6 pairs) spiking was the fastest way. I returned 2 years later and again last Winter to check on our work and no sign of any spike marks. I've seen how fast lime and poplar occlude and even noticed when climbing shoots from some spike marks on trees worked on by others previously. Ty
  19. Hello, In 2013, we worked on a large and very tall Macrocarpa here in Brittany for a British couple. A member of our team who was a former tree officer before moving here gave the tree a VTA. Risks where discussed but the couple neither wished to remove such the tree nor could afford it at the time. We also removed some wind damaged and dead branches on the day. March 6th this year and storm Doris managed to uproot and topple the tree onto their cottage. The insurance is only paying two thirds out and are holding the couple liable for the remaining third as the tree was such an obvious risk. The couple have come back to us suggesting we are liable ourselves as we gave the tree a clean bill of health even though we did point out the very obvious risk to the house at the time. No written tree report was commissioned at the time. I'm not worried, it's bluff on the part of the client and I'm not going to start telling every client their trees are to come down just because they are in range of their house. Ty
  20. What is the problem with a tacho? Today it's an id type card with your mugshot on it. I just leave it in all the time. Only ever ran out of driving time once en route to Paris and then I swapped with another lad after 4hrs. Ty
  21. Perhaps they also worked for a fairground? Seriously though, I've seen a crew here towing a 750kg shredder connected to a tipping trailer towed by a 3.5t tipper. Although I observed it was more for convenience for deplacement on a long line of street trees. Ty
