  1. Sorry mate I don't understand what you mean. You need a license by law, he doesn't need a license/traing or certs by law. If I would have driven past and seen him doing that job then I would have thought,":laugh1: what's he up to?!!!" but that would have been it. In fact I see something just as comical more or less every time I drive past the the gangs workin for the LA. (btw it is a very large private company and not LA employed staff) People not qualified/trained to carry out the task in hand, not provided with the appropriate ppe etc, etc. Ie grass cutters hacking trees. It's just not worth worrying about and certainly not worthy of fine like this guy got IMO. What I do think is worthy of a whine is when customers get blatantly ripped off or conned and employees or members of the public blatantly being subject to unnecessary dangers. Plus I think it's also worthy of a phone call to the appropriate body, as is a lot of other things that people turn a blind eye to when they shouldn't!
  2. You would have thought so! Especially when there seems to be alot of people who say they will work for free just to get the experience!
  3. Since its for getting a good working position it makes sense to clip it wherever gets you that good working position. Sometimes I think you fellas worry about stuff too much!
  4. Of course I didn't read it, I read the thread title and based all my comments solely on that. I'm not completely siding with him but if I condemn him them I may as well condemn myself and a good majority of professional arbs too. You do know that best practice states we should all retrain/do a refresher course every 5 years from the date we acquired our certs? How many keep that up? Does that mean everyone who doesn't is incompetent and is putting themselves and others at risk, while someone who has just got their certs for the first time with minimal training and experience is ok and safe? Someone could have taken a pic of me the other day using the 020 on the ground with no helmet, ear muffs and eye protection. The HSE could have looked into it and fined me for not keeping up with my training, not having tickets for using a ladder, not having any training for manual lifting, not having my LOLER up to date etc etc etc. Why didn't I have a helmet on? Because it was hot and I was dragging brash but needed to whip down a bit of scrub but cba going to get a ground saw and helmet. Or they could have seen me a couple of days previously carrying out a an awkward bit of a reduction on a TPO tree over plenty of targets using rigging and all the skills we need daily. Plus I was all PPE'd up. Do we all abide by the rules and regs we should all the time? Have we all have the training and can prove we have by producing up to date certs? Do we bollocks!
  5. Who's to say this guy is doing it wrong! He's 53 and still climbing trees! Judging by the amount of injury threads that pop up most of us Pro's won't get to his age as climbers! Fining this guy won't do a thing for the industry, are we all going to stop one handing 020's and never free climb at any point again? I always knew ladders were the future.
  6. Nope, the costs to the NHS and costs from lost revenue due to not working through ill health etc far outweigh the collected taxes. It's really the only reason they spend money trying to get us to stop drinking and smoking. Back to the OP, this is completely ridiculous! 6k costs when there are scum out there causing untold misery to others and receiving far, far smaller fines or slaps on wrists. Anyone who has done their fair share of cony hedge topping will have done plentyof balancing on dead pointy twigs, not tied in and one handing the 020. Plus maybe his RA stated it was too warm to wear chainsaw proofs and that he could get better footholds without clumsy protective boots. I bet there isn't one of us who could say that they have never, ever breached not even one HSE rule! Different kettle of fish if he had made an untrained employee do the above. Anyone plenty of people cost the NHS loads of money each year from DIY accidents, should we all grass our neighbours up when we see them with a drill in their hands putting up a shelf without checking for electricity cables first?!
  7. Tbh I wouldn't care if it was legally right or not I think morally you should keep them maintained ie pruned to a sensible height. I have seen far too many selfish people that because their tree doesn't bother them everyone else can get stuffed. Btw I'm not suggesting your selfish as your are asking if you should do something about it. Do the right thing and get them back in check, then keep them in check. If it was the other way around im sure you would think your neighbour unreasonable if they did nothing about it, plus it must be blocking some light off at 60 feet. Life's too short to piss people off.
  8. People are just too bleedin selfish these days, if it doesnt affect them they dont give a monkey's. The tree is going to fail, I would tell he neighbour that.
  9. If anyone dares whine about firemen refusing to rescue a cat then they need a slap! Anyone phoning the fire brigade asking to help rescue a cat also needs a slap, and deserves a fine for wasting time! Besides we were all indestructible at 15 so no credit to the kid. I've been to rescue 2 cats and both of them jumped out of the tree before I managed to get close to them. The 'tree surgeon' should stick to whatever job he was doing at the time when he was asked him if he could rescue a cat.
  10. The thing is though with tree work its not very often that it "needs" doing. The out of control hedge can stay that way for another 5 years and that big tree can just keep getting bigger as it has for the last 20 years ive been living here. The leaking pipe needs fixing now, the heating needs sorting now, I need electricity now etc etc. Plus its never worth thinking we should all up our rates(albeit some mass price fixing ) because there will always be plenty of others that can do it cheaper. Dont think the cheap guys will go out of business soon and all will be fine, they wont, plus there are always others that join the party. The only answer I can come up with is to get the clients that want the work at the price you charge. Once thats been cracked its plain sailing.
  11. I would say its more to do with her "aggressive behaviour" and "mental health issues" that they think she would be an unfit mother which I totally agree with if thats the case. The EDL bit has probably been blow out of proportion by the newspaper. I have seen too many helpless kids being raised by scum who shouldn't have to right to breed IMO.
  12. Thats a bit of a shame as it sounded like a very sensible law. I bet that tree dominated the neighbours garden and house.
  13. Thats were I think the law is an ass. Why can someone be denied permission to erect an extension but then be allowed to grow a forest of lombardy and conifers! Makes no sense and I do feel sorry for the poor buggers that have to put up with selfish neighbours. No excuse for what happened in this thread though.
  14. Of course not, you can always poke fun at conspiracy theories, as they can always counter argue.
  15. I hope you arent allowed to carry a firearm anymore!!! Really, come on there is no Dr Evil plotting against us all to have total control over our lives and souls! I bet all this paranoia dates back to the time of Socrates! I think you give these 'governments' too much credit. I say bring on more CCTV and I couldn't care about anyone reading my meaningless ramblings on. MUAHAHAHAHA
  16. Wirecore comes into its own on big pines and gnarly barked pops etc. Its a lot quicker to flick about and not get caught up in the bark like a normal rope will. Only when chogging down though dont think I could ever be bothered to use one as a normal lanyard.
  17. Nice one, cheers for the info mate. I thought it must be a metric size just as you say though its quite a bit finer than your standard M10. Ill buy an m10x1.0 and let you know if its the right size.
  18. Try some SIP progress, they are a more loose fit. And err dont bother with the braces, we are supposed to be tree surgeons not farmers.
  19. As per the title anyone got any info as to which helicoil I will need to get? From what I can see they are all the same size, I just dunno what size that is!
  20. You may have already thought of this but I would suggest you have a good think if it is going to cost you more time leaving everything there. By that I mean does the brash need moving to a specific place not only for the customer to move put so its not in your or the groundies way while working? Sometimes it can be a lot quicker and easier to whack them through a chipper than cut move stack cut etc etc, depending on the drag obviously. Same with the logs, does he want them cutting and stacking in a specific place, rather than just lumping them down and straight on the van? I wouldnt charge much less than a half/full day whatever it is compared to if I was using the chipper and moving the arisings, as the actually daily cost of running the machines is not much, obviously depending on if there is going to be a lot of runs back and to from the yard etc. Its like when a customer says they will keep all the chip, if we just barrow it down and spread it out on the borders, same with the can we just cut up all the logs and stack them at the bottom of the garden with the wood pile. We can always do it but it will cost them a lot more.
  21. Well if its too rich it will also be poor. Also dont forget the engine and carb are quite a bit different compared to the 020/200t The info about removing the h limiter was from a guy working for Stihl, although not a tech guy it was something he had heard as a workaround, didnt get a lot of detail and best with a pinch of salt etc. I have a 201t that I will have a mess about with next week if I get the chance but it looks like its came from the factory with a rich l screw and the H right out on the limit cap. I think its safe to say that the 201t seems to need a lot more setting up than the 200t or its even more dependant on fine adjustments etc. Has anyone stripped one of the engines/carbs down an a 201T yet?
  22. From what I have seen, heard and have cobbled together the top end needs richening and the bottom end leaning out. This can only be done by removing the limiter caps on the H needle. I 'presume' some dealers are doing the above (or something like it)and thats why some saws run fine and some dont. Or its a bad batch of cheap carbs and the luck of the draw. Partly based on fact from what I hear but not gospel.
  23. Cheers for the info. Followed quite a few of your projects and always find them brilliant pieces of work. One day I WILL make something practical and aesthetically pleasing rather than a swedish candle or a piece of firewood. I have some beech, elm and cedar sawn into planks so at least its a start, well thats what I keep saying to myself!
  24. Looks fantastic!! What timber is it? I guess beech? 10X lacquer sounds like A lot of work!!
  25. Totally agree. I would say a vast majority of my clients have never needed or know anyone who require tree work so they have no references of costs or recommendations. To most clients its a simple 'gardening' job(even the biggest nasty black polar) in their eyes. You can usually tell when they are impressed there is no sawdust on the driveway and are irrelevant that you have spent 2 days rigging and carting out 10+ ton of rotten poplar while keeping their greenhouse, conservatory and lawn intact. I cant blame anyone for getting a few quotes and as you say how do they differentiate between a good firm and a not so good one if as above they have no references? All I do is try to reassure potential customers that we are a professional firm and that by using us they dont have to worry about any else. I dont say it like that but I hope I come across like that. But, many people just want the cheapest price and we have to accept that, all I can do is offer a professional service at a competitive price, sometimes I will be the cheapest and sometimes not, hopefully I'm the cheapest only when other 'professional' tree surgeons are involved.
