  1. The name Magnum was introduced by Stihl in America to capitalise on the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry films, it's an American thing.
  2. play guitar/bass and write tunes most monday nights in a studio in town - no gigging though, those days are long gone. here's a tune we recorded in my brother in law's garage. Black Sunsets by esqueleto on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free
  3. Good to hear, the problem with the chipper idea is your committing your cash without any idea of how you'll get a good return for your investment. The worrying thing is there's people out there with money (ex-military or a sudden inheritance for example) who if badly advised could lose it all trying to buy their way into the industry. If you want to invest, invest slowly once you have gained experience and created a network of good associates within the industry.
  4. Actually Robert your right, it wasn't a panic fuel queue afterall, I lied - it was the line for the annual West Lothian dogging festival
  5. no, cause that's my silver Daewoo Matiz last in the queue, after waiting for half an hour, I topped it up with £11.47 quids worth, filled it right to the brim as well. I do all my hedgework in that car, all the clippings from the day go in the boot.
  6. Sheep unite!
  7. Forget the chipper idea, it's a total waste of money and people will exploit you, your chipper would be ruined and worthless within two weeks. By all means get a cheap van if you dont have any wheels. Having the means to get to the yard or jobsites is a priority for employers when considering hiring in subbies or part-time workers. Just keep calling companies until you get work, even if it's dragging branches all day or raking hedgecuttings for low wages. Send out cv's to all the local companies, then a few days later make the calls to the companies. It'd be a good idea to get basic ppe if you dont have it. Hardhat, chainsaw trousers and boots. Good luck.
  8. panic buyers = sheep this type of panic buying is a good indication of what people would be like if a genuine crisis hit the UK like a Tsunami or SARS/H1N1. There would be murders at Tescos as the sheeple scrambled to fill their trolleys with ready meals and 2 litre multipack bottles of Coke for the impending crisis. Panic buyers might as well have their foreheads stamped with, 'I'm an Idiot'.
  9. In the hands of skilled climbers it looks very efficient, however.....give this technique to an idiot and he'll have climbed himself into a quandry in 5 mins flat.
  10. They're using the Swabisch. Much better hitch than the regular prussik. Releases when you want grips tight when you want. An excellent choice for a no nonsense friction hitch.
  11. There's a common misconception the Russians were fighting the Mujahadeen, they weren't, the Russians were fighting the CIA who were arming, training and funding the Mujahadeen......people like Osama Bin Laden for example. The reason Russia eventually pulled out of Afghanistan was because they realised they could never beat an endlessly US trained, supplied and funded Mujahadeen.
  12. What about Kelburn or Auchencruive? they were great venues. Too far north right?
  13. Sheep eyes are the Mongolian Haribo
  14. Looks like Euc gunnii - the split? - possibly frost damage/drought causing the bark to contract due to lack of moisture, tree is attempting to seal the wound with new wood which you can see just under the bark in the 2nd pic. Keep a lookout for the foliage dying off or becoming discoloured. The pruning probably wont have helped, not because you shouldn't prune Eucs but because we've had two exceptionally cold periods in the last 2/3 years - the pruning wounds and loss of foliage from pruning wont have helped the tree in it's ability to thrive.
  15. Dean, saturated and monounsaturated fats are non essential nutrients, you dont need them, although they can be used by the body to make energy. Polyunsaturated fats or oils are essential. A piece of meat will contain mainly saturated and monounsaturated fat with little polyunsaturated fat. The problem with crisps is the salt content, they make your body hold water to compensate for the salt which is why serious crisp fanatics look bloated.
  16. welcome to arbtalk, found any downsides to the wrench so far?
  17. The Uni setup with the Ropewrench added seems to make a lot of sense for working a rope SRT. Thanks for trying the experiment and posting the results. Interesting to hear it makes for improved control.
  18. Very good climbing, great approach to the job. That kind of work in particular requires that you always to be thinking ahead and anticipating the outcome of the next move. Good to see your getting interesting jobs out there Reg. Hope you were well paid for that one.
  19. Interesting short film - My Own Hands on Vimeo .
  20. You dont need any form of certification to enter an ISA comp.
  21. what happened? poor pruning practices by the last company to work on the tree?

  24. another possible reason for the large root formation in Dean's pic is that the tree was potbound for too long before being planted. Having said that, the point where the two parts of the tree meet does look like a graft similar to what you see with flowering cherrys etc.
  25. Can't be sure, but from looking at the bark it looks like a Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), sometimes they're grafted onto Thuja rootstock. So you've got two different trees. They graft them because they grow faster in the nursery meaning they can sell them quicker and make more money. .
