  1. They have no Innonotus...and the alphabetical list is..well.....not very alphabetical! Some nice shots though. Makes you realise just how much it takes to create an anywhere near comprehensive catalog.....!
  2. Nice dryadeus and the velvet shank is a pretty shroom too. All pale aside the the gano...that resinaceum is impressive!
  3. If you suspect an agent has been used "systemically", the only way to tell would be to send a sample of the trees cambium woody tissues to lab for analysis. If you find oily deposits, perhaps BP had something to do with it?
  4. We have come to this understanding of sempervirens. If the latin is translated , it would be more accurate to say semper-always virens-living hence-everliving: so "evergreen" Just a bit of trivia.....
  5. Quite unusual failure. Not seen that in oak a great deal myself. Literally "popped" out its socket! Edit: Being conservation minded Sean, it worth watching the fallen for FB's? There's gotta be an agent at work in there I racoon.
  6. Fastigiate- erect or upright...derived from latin "fastigium"
  7. vulgaris-common alba-white tricolor-3 coloured purpurea-purple pseudo - false
  8. Lovin' the bees in trees David! I was told in conversation this w/e of a developer who, on finding bees nesting in the garden of the place he'd just acquired in Brighton, tried to burn them all. He poured white spirit all over the nest and set it alight . He had to do it again the next day as those remaining had tried to regroup. He cited his allergic reaction as his reason. You far more likely to get stung if you attack them ...ignorant git!
  9. I think one of the best Ive seen was a tree design done as a complete back piece....soz, no pics!
  10. Try bruising the pores whilst it is still forming....confragosa will bruise a pinkish-brown, eventually turning brown. "Derivation of name: Daedaleopsis means "having the appearance of Daedalea"; confragosa means rough, rugged and refers to the coarsely wrinkled and bumpy upper surface."-Wiki

Well said that man....a tragic week in motorsport. Respect.
  12. Were you aware of this little campaign Plippy.... Elms return to British countryside / RHS Gardening Tim
  13. I think you are maybe over thinking it...The only term used in DDD that is in anyway quantative is "dead". And even then, I can think of beech that have been condemned to monolith treatment as they were considered dead, only to then put out new growth! This is why it is important to cover yourself by documenting the situation adequately.
  14. Hi Andy, You are right that Schwarze is not new to innoculation theory..afterall, he was forced to halt mycological research into wood decay when funding ceased as I understand it. He worked thereafter on processes of decay in coffins ! Furthermore, there is a chapter in the tome that talks about the wood used for violins and in terms of the fungal activity that is required to make it such an ideal material for soundboards.... Im sure there is plenty of research available on the net about this by Schwarze, Mattheck and others no doubt. And yes, discreet invasion is more likely to result in infection than an increment borer although this seems at first counter intuitive. It is indeed all about the microclimate!
  15. Well, I dont know about "should not be possible..." but as Ive already said, it isnt necessary (under DDD ) I was mostly just postulating that the judge is quite likely to not be well acquainted with the position L.A/s and T.O.'s on the ground. If "not possible" means "saving wasted time considering applications" then I would suggest the T.O's concerned acquainted themselves with the legislation and simply refuse to consider such apps...as I believe they do with BS5837 when they pass across their desks...However, there may be an issue of liability here(?) I personally think that the LA is there to provide a service and has a duty to respond to unnecessary apps by informing those contractors/individuals involved of the situation as it stands....Another aspect that the judges comments fail to adequately consider (imo ) As to the wisdom in making an app for removal and citing dangerous tree rather than removing it forthwith as a matter of public safety..I couldn't comment. But then, arbs are fearful of legislation in others ways I can think of also....! Edit: I meant to make another point with regards tpo apps.....You shouldnt have to ring up your T'O by getting friendly with him first as a way of seeing eye to eye.....and getting consent. It really isnt cricket and if nowt is written down and recorded...you could be letting yo'self in for a world of pain....!?
  16. Mmmm..Good question imo. Don't ask me to cite the case, but I m fairly certain the courts have had to make a determination as to the nature of "dangerous" . Infact, it was decided in a ruling that the tree must have to be "imminently dangerous". An entirely plausible recommendation you might think. There must have to have been some confusion then as to the status of the tree/s in question. IE. Not just dangerous, but "imminently dangerous":001_rolleyes: Not entirely helpful, imo. There are so many systems that can be used to ascertain the safety/risk value of a tree that no two answers are likely to be the same. If we started cutting down on the basis of "personal, professional opinion", we would be in a right mess..,again, IMO! This is what the judge is reported to have ruled Peter, by suggesting we never need consent to fell. if indeed, it is exempt under DDD, then its already covered. It is entirely plausible the tree could be considered for removal under a much wider remit however. I guess that's what you get when "unqualified opinion" ( in the strictly arboreal context ) is the last word on an issue?
  17. I know...Im just having a whinge! The point is that it takes a particular combination of factors to create the scenario that was the program. The fact I couldn't be arsed to sit through it makes me unqualified to comment really. However, trees were to be blamed for all their woes...not their rather dull approach to home ownership which seemed to have central to its philosophy, something along the lines of..." Oh, we just hoped it would be alright; it obviously isn't! " Truly inspired...(not)
  18. Channel 4 is slated to become a licensed service....!
  19. I thought the comments made by whats 'er name were unimformed so I switched over....Roots will not grow under houses as a general rule. ( Same reason they dont grow under tarmacadam roadways ) Neither do they exploit drains unless they are already damaged in some way. I thought what little I saw of the program painted trees as a nuisance, to be removed if you are a responsible homeowner.....
  20. No matter who you do the PTI with...do not expect the 3 day course to be a teaching style affair...You gotta have the knowledge before really. hence the "recommended pre-requisite level 3 qual"....It will though ( if you're lucky) lend a few pointers and tips with things like survey/inspections....HTH
  21. Thanks 4 updating with pics mate!
  22. Nice looking tree!
  23. Thinning has it's place but I am not a big fan....It should be used SPARINGLY imo and in conjunction with tip reduction to balance hormone stimulation. 2m is a lot for this canopy... I agree the ash needs looking at ( not saying it hasn't been suggested..just not mentioned on the spec in this thread)
  24. Better still, pass the fb through a band saw...perfick! The phellinus is pretty tough..almost like wood but with a strong mushroomy smell! Phellinus igniarius- aka. White Trunk Rot. Hers a picus image of a knackered beech stem, pathogen is the dreaded Phellinus igniarius. Ist shot image. basal/buttress cross section profile. 2nd shot image, @ 12-14 ft up the stem (cross section) Tim
