  1. No..I know. Thats fine. I didnt want to get into an AA bashing tho' it's of course their own business what they chose to do with material that is of interest to the industry at large. I think it's a shame that it is unavailable. Tony's summary will do and my thanks to him for posting BTW . It is not unappreciated!
  2. Ever since I started to use the internet for one reason or another, I have been required to furnish forums and other account registrations with a user name and password. It is a question of security. I have continued to use the user name in many of the applied registrations for ease of use. I dont have a problem with that as far as it goes. It serves a purpose and perhaps the added advantage that "bosses" will not know who you are so cannot "stalk" your interactions with like minded folk, taking umbrage with comments and attitudes that were frankly never intended for them. You are being extremely naive (imo) if you dont think exposure on the internet is not viewed with interest by a huge number of people, organisations and businesses alike. I would advise folk to behave in as best way they know how in all their interactions on an open forum especially, but in all their dealings on the internet. I regard this forums ' structure and rules of usage to be amongst the best of the forums I visit...Okay, you cant swear but thats not the end of the world. In many other respects, it is not as interventionist or patronising either. It is a risky strategy to allow folk to behave freely but this way, we get to build up a better picture and feel for the people behind the names, and this is not because of the pseudonym but because of the comments and input and subject matter in which members are active. I sense that a large proportion of the membership on Arbtalk (particularly when it first began) are infact relatively new to forums. Some folk need to learn the hard way..others are probably not worth taking too seriously but it is also worth remembering that it is a resource for a large number of people with diverse ranges of interest and input aswell as swapping information and the like. Treat other as you would like to be treated and you wont go far wrong!
  3. I can only find an article relating to iTree. Can you post a link to the article reviews the AA conference on the AA website mate?
  4. Welcome; and good luck with your new "audience". Tim
  5. The foray we had in WW really opened my eyes to the Armillarias of this world... They are impressive examples Shaun. The fung threads seem to endure repeated looking and yes, learning.
  6. Man...those pictures of Leif Goodwin are in another world!
  7. There ought to be some kind of prize....! I m glad you made to the O.Rackham thing too. Good effort Tobias!
  8. Glad you enjoyed it...I dont feel quite so jealous now, knowing a couple of you's within spitting distance from the talk, didn't make it! Not something I would have missed, especially with working in and around the area that formed the focus of the subject ....Bad luck guys!
  9. I thought these were one of your more creative "mock-ups" until I saw the second image... I sincerely hope these lucidums are in the arbtalk catalog mate.....Classic. Or should that be "kick-arse" ?
  10. Tony said "Interestingly, it seems that the courts (Bryant & Anor v Macklin [2005] EWCA Civ 762 – I’m too good to you all ) have recently dismissed the replacement cost approach (as favoured by CAVAT) in favour of lower values based around property costs and ‘willingness-to-pay’ (a.k.a. WTP)...." Oopppsss ...I guess I should have read it a bit more carefully!! I can perhaps see the importance of a recognized benchmark structure for valuation. It would be regrettable to see trees in the landscape being "tiptoed" around for fear of unrealistic values being attached to them !

This value though, is arrived at by a notion of what is "reasonable". This is linked to property value/amenity loss...in such a way as to confer the lower of replacement scenario values...This is linked to WTP...but that , to me , is "reasonable" in another guise only. Not a riveting read exactly but what a mess. Imagine getting shocked by an electric fence so violently you are thrown to the ground! Thats gotta be worth a few bob!
  12. @CZHey.....The AAIS has long been in the process of trying to get the data set we lack in one place. Trees with meripilus are selected and you can get further info from the AAIS. Brian Greig is the contact Alice Holt Lodge Wrecclesham Surry GU10 4LH tel:01420 22022 email: [email protected] Although some months since this was brought to my attention, I would still expect you to be able to get a positive response from this organisation. If you gotta drop it, make it count!
  13. Mmm....breakfast! The oysters are the best of the tree shrooms imo!
  14. I understand spheroplast as a scientific term but that it is applied to describe the loss of cell wall structure.... Spheroplast - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Spheroblast appears to be an invented term...( I can find no reference on internet either) I do know what you mean chris cnc...I have a couple which I cleaned up and oiled and they sit on a mantle piece as " oddities/junk". They were taken from the floor around cedars.... Oh well....any one else with any thoughts as to either the meristematic disruptions or spheroplasts?
  15. Dave...Have you any references for the the term "spheroblast" ?
  16. Strange growths...probably chrlorophyll in the bark giving it that color. Abnormal cell division perhaps....? From the images, this growth characteristic is all located on wound/infection courts? Or are you suggesting that the Ash's inability to grow in height and stature is an associated issue?
  17. Yes I was drunk..but I still spelt okay and didnt say too much crazy stuff ..more shooting the breeze. Im sorry if you took offence. A bit eloquacious Id admit, but wheres the offence in that when you look around the site at some of the subject matter and derails that entertain folk in a sober frame of mind already! I was mostly agreeing with you . (U cant win!) Actually....My point is that it may be quite possible to get further advice without incurring onerous, consultant fees but this would require a site visit. This is what Hama offered and good for him! i certainly think felling due to not wishing to lose out on a cash cow is very poor advice...sorry! (Posted from the Kings Arms on my blackberry!)
  18. First looks like an Oyster of some sort (Pleurotus spp) Cant really see enough to be certain to any extent from the second. HTH.
  19. May be the wrong forum for this but knowing "tree nerds" populate the membership and like nothing more than to browse these things....This looks like a useful resource. For students of all ages and levels.... Tree factsheets | Natural History Museum
  20. Yeah...? I really think making a judgment on the pictorial evidence so far proffered is no more than educated guesswork. Nothing so far offered as advice is more than generic, species associated postulated opinion. Even saying.."Id never recommend on pic evidence" and then proceeding to do just that seems daft frankly..You know who you are...tut tut! for christ sake mate...get someone in who knows what you dont...Rule 1 of arbclub: Know your limits! Yours faithfully grumpyol'git....lymeregis!
  21. Very nice David...
  22. You make a good point Giles...An obsession with cleanliness in the garden does indeed lead to the kind of sterility of ecological dynamics resulting in a proliferation in many urban cases of things like Armillaria. To think, they all laughed at the hippy conservationists with their weird ideas back in the day. Unfortunately, i think there is still a strong culture of preference for everything tidied up and burnt/disposed of......
