  1. Dont even smear it all over fresh wounds on trees when working them probably ...
  2. Yeah...I dont even think that it was an ill conceived idea. It sets out tu address the issue of the gates being twisted by external forces working the gate in some way thus rendering the device potentially life threatening. I mean, no-one watches the gates at all times,,it s not possible or practical. It even really comes pretty close to achievin this as alot of you it would seem rate the gear with some confidence. What I dont like is the fiddly nature of the buttons. Unfortunately if this was not so, they too would become liable to unpredictable behaviour when exposed to external and unexpected forces. That aside, we can all live with some inconvenience if it means undeniably safer equipment. Nylon may not be my personal material of choice for the gates. Apparently Petzl too had second thoughts on this. Presumably the equipment failing is either a quality issue or design flaw..Be careful out there those of you using this gear is all...>>>
  3. I was just reading a list of the ingredients in gt85...its not good....
  4. PDA mate..look up the Arboricultural Information Exchange and search out the appropiate page link. A website maintained by Chris Skellern. Basially I think it runs from a windows based platform Fat 32 or NTFS....no great shakes. Quite pricey tho matey. GPS positions the tree each time you present a new specimen etc. ( cant see the link immediately I looked for it on AIE but it certainly used to be there. ) You could try a google search for computer tree survey mmm......... I think I remember that you could use a trial version for free..but not what you need longterm eh? Was gonna edit this post but the website interferes pretty good eh...technology.Dont trust the machines, they will eat your info and all is lost! You need to look up a software application known as "Tree Wise " this enables you download nfo collected from the field on a palmtop to the PC. It is owned by Robin Forestry Surveys. One of many systems out there....
  5. I'm not dissin plastic brother...just the choice of material that Petzl chose to run with. Plastics are a huge conglomerate family of versatile polymers that can be hard to even spot as a plastic at times....amen to that my friend. If the design was conceived in consultation with arborists so much the better yeah....? Actually alot of climbing carabiners are snap gates... safety features on gate mechanisms are desiged for use within arboriculture...(altho' not solely) Interestingly, its seems to be the arborists that deny mechanical devices the like of which would have to include the lockjack and so on over more tried and tested techniques when rock climbers enjoy the benefits of friends ( mech cams ) and alot more besides....mmmmmmmm Trees and rock are cousins but quite individual beasts with identifiably different needs, problems and criteria...!!!! lol:motz: But hey, Its gonna be interesting however this thing plays out eh>><><
  6. Maybe its a case of " good things come to those who wait" ? I tried the saddle at the APF last show back there.... It is a seemingly new concept saddle.I guess you argue it is an excercise in redesigning the wheel but in comparison to the set ups Ive viewed paraded on treebuzz, it has been redesigned from principle and objective. It sure looks pretty whacky ( no offence) Its a great disappointment that delivery and teething problems have overshadowed the launch. It is a long time to wait and no I would not be happy to suffer the indignation of 6 months to return a saddle ( I mean, what do you do in the interim?) but hey...thats exactly what I jus opted to do...Please dont let me down guys.... The issues with the saddle stem from the finish on the alum rings referred to above. These components are being subjected to a more comprehensive process in order to remove a small but crucially located and very damaging burr which has seen webbing destroyed in alarmingly little time I gather. This presumably will correct the fault that I have been assured was not as widespread as rumour may have seemed to suggest. I have no idea why it is taking so long to produce the saddle since. It must be harder than anticipated .
  7. The point that here seems to need making is one of design...Do the designers climb and use the gear...they ought to if we are to get wheat not chaff....? Nice post there Pete........>>>
  8. I can confirm that my information is the same...but was warned not to hold my breath. Not what I wanted to hear but there.....
  9. You want to use a short tape connector in there or summut...prevents twist and go action!! Also good as quick release rescue...slash and away...
  10. How long you bin waiting buddy??
  11. They cant spell either....!!!!!
  12. Railways regard these things as "problem species"....Its not all good is it? Between a rock and a hard place...they are undervalued by conservationists and disregarded by developers but we all know they are capableof being a thing of great beauty and aesthetic appeal in amenity situations....It figures that a tree so readily able to set seed and colonise on almost any soil should produce a high number of specimens I'd probably rather see replaced by other trees. Love em and love to hate them!!
  13. Thats a rhetorical question right...? And thanx for the pointers there Steve.....
  14. I still wouldn't trust that firefighter with the chainsaw though, would have to be one of you guys doing the cutting above my head like that!!!! Yeah, I gotta say that looked pretty desparate...would have scared me to death anyone with a chainsaw around me like tha'...... Yeah Palms , alot. They like the Atlantic drift and the systems thing bring...why comes s.Ireland has a few! ( Co Cork)
  15. I ve , actually not that recently anymore, acquired a TreeMotion saddle. What I mean by that is I am living under what I hope turns out not to be false hope. Ordered some 10 weeks ago, problems with delivery dates are prevalent. Say no more. If anyone has the update on the TreeMotion comotion it can be posted here as this may also help the suppliers deal with continual enquiries vis a vis the current state of proceedings. I dont know about you but I get to feeling like a bit f a heel keep ringing up to ask only to end up complaining. I gather from old threads that there may have been delays in the past.I mean, how many of you are waiting for the manufacturers again this year? (Please understand I do not wish to stir up resentment here. Use this thread for that which it was intended; TreeMotion news.....)
  16. Winchester Tree Services - Norwich. Isnt that like a double negative but worse>>??
  17. It kind of surprises me that manufacturers of ppe and in this case Petzl ; Lets face it , the reputation of this french company is world wide, still somehow allow quality control balls up like the plastic gate issue to need a recall. I mean, this is not a quality control issue in the strict sense. Whether or not the plastic gates were the reason for the recall referred to above, I could never bring myself to use the carabiner. I just was not turned on by the plastic. Not even an expensive polymer. Cheap manufacturing standards aimed at keeping costs down no doubt.I could lose faith in the safety of my day to day working life. I know this sounds bad but somehow I dont think if it had been me I could have allowed such a crucial thing to have slipped thrugh the safety testing net had I been responsible for the deign of the thing at Petzl. Which brings me to the next issue. Too many hands make mistakes. Maybe its a case of accountability in the primary sense of decisions being jointly or even remotely made. I've said too much...Scare mongering and slander are but a small step from here!
  18. No ..I'm speechless; I jus wanted to see if my avatar has disappeared again!?
  19. I also heard some less than delightful tales of tree work in Alaska...They got maybe three trees. Birch.Pine.Birch...ummm birch....mmmmm
  20. Hey treediver would be pleased to get isbn/ref or othern useful info on that vid eh mate!
  21. Yeah...migrated here from Treebuzz....jus followed a link and here I is...I too would like to see forestry on this board aswell as surgery....I dont know how many americans to expect...damn they can whinge tho'
