  1. Something makes that Phlebia radiata very hard to focus on...I'm guessing it is ever so slightly "furry" .
  2. "I believe your rubbing off on me a bit Tony!..." Dear oh dear... I had to have little sit down in a dark room to recover me wits when I read that.... Gotcha now! Nothing inauspicious or salacious intended. Phew! I came across this which I wondered might be of interest. It has been about for a decade or more so may well not be new to many of you fungi students. We are seeing a fantastic display this year and some unexpected associations. I for one have pondered on this very theme as Im sure have some of you... Climate change and the effects on Fungi. Lonsdale_1994.pdf
  3. Just for clarification, the intended subject of the report writing module is NOT infact "Mortgage" or "Subsidence" related ? I might be interested....will watch this space!
  4. The rules of said competition state quite clearly that "identity" issues will score against the entrants efforts..!
  5. Not seeing the "fungi" of the title...am I missing something? Does the exudate smell atall?
  6. Just to clarify what has actually been said in the responses so far ..( these fung boffs like using acronyms and such..its like a code and it rots your brain and renders you unable to communicate with "normal" folk) an to answer your original questions... Honey Fungus- Armillaria spp ( mellea)- google it. Quite likely to affect the hedge frankly . Would not recommend doing anything in fact. Not until the hedge is clearly dying and not recovering. But then you knew that didn't you...! HTH
  7. Oh...I m not proud to say I've used this method plenty and usually forced to put a cut that meets. This is as getting paid was on a produce basis and everything (mostly) was at 2m (over your head) It's gotta be done or the trees dont come down, they dont get processed and sned on the floor and y'all go home weaker. poorer and with less fuel than you started with! Dont faff about putting plunge cuts etc, diagonal BS..wastes wood. Just gotta be ready ready to move quick sharp and leave your saw behind...In fact, I wrecked a perfectly good Husk 357 messing about with straps and controlled separation. Saw jammed and I watched helplessly as it all went pear shaped in an orange heap on the floor. Saw, fuel and a good felling bar...oh and maybe some highlift wedges...Job done!!
  8. Eh..money talks and BS walks as the saying goes! Post em up czhey. I might learn something!
  9. An iPhone that takes an image like that didn't exist in 2007/8 eh! Cant believe how good a quality image you can make with 'em!
  10. On the basis of a picture that shows only a part of the crown...? I think not ( no disrespect Tony!)
  11. Looks a bit like...Grifola frondosa - Hen of the woods -
  12. This may well sound a bit negative but I fear you will nonetheless, find it to be the case within the UK arb industry. As you will probably be aware, there are a number of systems used, not just in the uk as Sean is testament to; but that should you train, so as to be able to apply any one system, you will inevitably find opportunities that are still not apparently available to you as employers prefer one system to another. This may be industry sector led (eg..rail) or it may be a decision that rests with managers and just to compound things, may well subject to change due to staff migration from one post to another. Otherwise known as "sod's law" mate!
  13. OMG...Please no! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ljFfL-mL70]YouTube - Darth Vader recording for TomTom GPS - behind the scenes[/ame] and [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdcJVuylmsM]YouTube - Yoda recording for TomTom GPS - behind the scenes[/ame]
  14. Yeah yeah...diffuse porous!
  15. Giles...Im pro tree and think you make a fair point. I am acutely aware of the stigma attached to this fungus and any effort to genuinely investigate the issues that relate to stability, if the tree poses any kind of risk (ie, there is a target of some consequence) are absolutely necessary. I am in no doubt that every tree deserves our best effort..best practice infact.... Oak has a track record of resilience. The science backs this up. The chemicals present in the heartwood of oak would make your toes curl. The tanins, suberin and tylosis involved would deter a fungus that is more used to the relative "pushover" that is beech! But, you need to understand the associations in an " hiolistic: sense...Look to environmental history, both recent and past...look to climatic influence, soil, species, diversification, the ecology and so on..... Me, Id bet the oak would wipe the floor with meripilus...the pussy likes a ring porous, false heartwood broadleaf that that thinks it's a temperate forest tree! tim
  16. I disagree mate...quite apart from the fact you haven't posted for 15-18mmonths and stick your head over the parapet only to slag off an initiative which, if you were paying attention, owes less perhaps for it's inception to H & S than the political ( 4 political read "fiscal") climate. I dont think your remark has a leg to stand on...even if you do feel patronised frankly.
  17. Its gotta be in recycler mode in this scenario....Oak has such strong defense systems that compartmentalisation would not be any kind of an issue for a healthy tree.
  18. I know but it's hard to give a tuss(le)/.....like what I did there? There isnt an LPA itn he land gonna risk spending out on treecare legislation.....
  19. Oh yeah...special mate! Not gonna win any prizes for "weird and wonderful-lesser spotted" etc etc..but nice macro image...
  20. Yeah...dont beat yourself up over it Max.....the client shoulda seen it comin' and there's no telling some folk mate! Im with Hama on this...poor management spec. The owner can't surely have known the tree woulda been removed not just reduced as per spec from what you've told us . At least he wont be looking repeated works however eh!
  21. Makes sense too when you consider that MEWPS, Fall Arrest systems and cranes are all covered by.. The Work at Height Regulations (2005) implementing the European Temporary Work at Height Directive (2001/45/EC) (2nd amendment of UWED)
  22. Presumably works under Miscellaneous Act...It doesn't ring true does it? One minute the LPA recommends a reduction (perhaps against better judgement and certainly not with liability as mentioned above ) but nevertheless, a reduction only to then throw their toys outta the pram and see to it the tree is removed wholesale. Not very consistent management...IMO. I dunno..these LPA's are very patchy. Some good, others frankly appalling!
  23. I hope Tony explained that we were proposing an arrangement like...we (uk forayers) could get together and pay your flight over here for our foray and then you can club together and buy us uk bods ( maybe half a dozen..not too many) our flights over to sweden for foreign foray! Only joshing in case you thought I'd taken leave of my senses...Seriously though, I'm sure a foray in sweden would be fun!
  24. It certainly is possible. Im not taking the mick when I say I thought you would have been informed of the necessary legal aspects to recording the relevant info...for both yourself and your clients...If you haven't, I'd be interested to know who your training was delivered by...? Tim

    Pholiota

It was something I read on a web page dedicated to Pholiota but stateside. I commented that they appear higher from the ground and more often than not and Tony (Hama) pretty much confirmed what you are now reiterating. It is an identifying feature and nothing wrong with that... I might be stretching the context a bit tbh. I think they can be perhaps easily recognised from each other by other features, especially if you are atuned to these things...the point being made was a rather dry academic one. Not sure its terribly helpful eh! Yeah...great pics mate!
