  1. We use the Oregon bar dressing tool, it works, they are hard though..
  2. Most PTO winches have a remote option these days. I'd go for Tajfun..
  3. We have a couple, both have had warranty work, but over all they are a good saw. Way better than the 261..
  4. Rigging is horrible with only one on the ground..
  5. We only rig when we have to, it's usually much slower than cut and chuck. Occasionally its faster.
  6. It's going to be towed by the tractor so that will limit distance, north Yorks might be a bit too far.... With the 50k tractor I can get a fair distance though.
  7. For me it's all about making money, if someone has something that can make me a few quid while they make some as well then it's a win win
  8. I'm thinking about getting a massive splitter with a 28 way knife, it would be more capacity than we need for our own stuff but I was thinking about hiring it out with an operator and doing other people's oversize stuff. There's a few estates and farms round here who would use it the odd day, but I have found that other tree surgeons can be a bit weird about hiring in a competitor.. I offer the same kind of service with the heizohack but so far only one tree surgeon has taken up the offer.. So my question is would you bring in a competitor to split your timber if he had a good machine for the job?
  9. All these directories are just leeches on the industry. Same with rated people and all the others.. Google allows people to leave reviews, and it's also the way that most people find trades, plus it's free..
  10. I try not to book stuff in too, it's just easier. Plus most of our commercial clients ring up wanting an immediate start, and they take priority.. Nothing worse than cancelling a weeks worth of domestics.
  11. I wouldn't bother, in that cc of saw I think the dolly is superior...
  12. Do the chassis flex that much? I have noticed that the Jap 4x4's tend to have shallower chassis rails, like 4-6" the landies look more like a transit type being about 8". Supposedly the new defender if it ever arrives is having an ally chassis.... it will probably cost £40k though:001_rolleyes:
  13. They were on 'you and yours' R4 last week, sounds crap to me.....
  14. Performance is great, but if it keeps letting you down, whats the point. Better to have a saw that starts and runs every time than a faster one that doesn't run at all. Our 261 was a dog too. The dolly 6100 is quite a nice saw, but not as fast as the 560, its been reliable though.
  15. If you're serious about winning contract work then you need to be good at this. If you aren't good at it then I can see the sense in employing someone to do it for you. There are specialists out there who will help you get CHAS, ISO etc, and some of the contract climbers on here have helped other firms get their AAAC. It stinks a bit as a system but that's how it is.
  16. I love the new Navara, if I had to replace the Landy tomorrow that would most likely be my choice.. Mind you, I have never seen a defender do this....
  17. Wish I'd got to meet him...
  18. Bump. Got most of it down now, there's at least 50 ton, two loads...
  19. Fascinating memoir from WW2. He was captured, escaped, captured again by the SS, then liberated..... 6 parts, not very long, half an hour well spent. https://ellenvgregory.com/2014/04/25/harrys-wwii-memoir-capture-and-the-cattle-truck/
  20. Its easier to work it out by weight, 1 ton of softwood @ around 20% moisture will yield around 4 cube of chip, at 50% moisture (fresh felled) it will yield around 2-2.5 cube. Weigh a couple of packs and that will give you a good idea of the volume. In terms of the space that it takes up its not that different IME.

    Rabaud kit?

I think the technique would be almost cut through the log onto rings , crane it onto the processor, then either split it as it is or zip through the straps and then split.. By the looks of it you could produce near a ton of logs with each stroke of the ram.

    Rabaud kit?

    About £25k I think...
  23. Any good? I really like the look of this 80 ton splitter, it has a conveyor option too... Anyone seen / used one? Log splitter for tractor: HORIZONTAL F80 - Rabaud
  24. I did 80 hours last week. I don't mind the odd long day but a week of them drags you down.. I don't love it that much.
  25. I should have mentioned that we have the dolly version too, good saws these. Out cut a 460 or a 372....
