Me and a mate discussed making something like that, but with a processor on as well. You would use the crane to feed both the processor and the big splitter, meaning that as a hire machine you could turn up at someones yard and split all their wood. We came to the conclusion however that most tree surgeons don't have cranes and therefore their yards are full of rings. So I doubt threre would be enough work for it.

I'd agree, although there was some rot through all the main stems, not just the one that failed. BTW could one tell the k deusta rot from the gano rot?

No, unfortunately. We'd have finished last week if I could have got her in. Its all been cubed and handballed over the broken wall into the trailer. some of the big rings had to be cut into 8 just to carry them. On the plus side the owner said we could put the sawdust on his compost heap:thumbup:... there must be 5 cube of the stuff at least.

A few pics of the big beech we have been taking down over the past 2 weeks, yes 2 weeks! on and off thanks to the weather, still just 2 of us on it and nearly done. You're right Mike, what a cowboy. mind you they did do all that rigging just to save a crappy wee rhoddy. They should get a hobbs, looked like the climber got bounced around a bit, although the groundy did seem to be getting the hang of it by the end.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is an ipad for? is it a big phone or a small laptop? or both?

I 've never tried rigging with a vt either josh, I have used a prussic however with some home made spiders that do a similar job. I find that a 4 wrap prussic will creep with heavier pieces, where as a 6 wrap one doesn't. I think if you put enough wraps on your vt it would be fine.

Two pairs of thick socks is probably a mistake, if they are two squashed all the air spaces (which give the insulation) are squeezed out. Better to wear 1 pair of quality WOOL walking socks over a pair of fine cotton socks (not sports socks). I wear the M+S ones that you'd normally wear with a suit and tie, you know really thin ones. Change the cotton ones every day and you can wear the wool ones all week.

I never have a problem parking outside greggs or any other purveyor of breaktime cholesterol. Thats what bus stops are for.

Fair play Stevie, however I wouldn't choose a vehicle based on the weather conditions for 2-3 weeks of the year. BTW my yard isn't large or flat, but I find hitching my trailer on and off is a doddle. Getting out in the snow is a pita though. I'm going to have to drag it out with the tractor tomorrow.

any tipper conversion on a l2oo / hilux/ranger/navara is going to have a poor load carrying capacity, however keep the chip box small and there's no reason why it wouldnt work. he'd be better just buying a regular pickup and getting a tipping trailer.
