    Arb pub

Since the world cup's on and many footballers go on to own pubs when their playing days are over, what would you call your retirement pub / club. I'll start off with "the cut and chuck":001_smile:
  3. i'd climb for £3 ph before tesco's at £20ph. I know that there are bills and stuff and I have a kid, but I hava had many diferent jobs over the years, some I liked some I didn't. I even worked in the city for a year, made good money too, but my heart wasn't in it. You only get one life, and its way too short to waste it in a dead end job you hate, Brodie, I think that for you arb is a dead end job, because the day you stop enjoying it is the day you should quit. Everyone would like more money but the love of the job outweighs the crap money, if it doesn't then get out.
  4. how are you paying the bills at the moment then??
  5. never mind the hotpants josh, get the budgie smugglers out next time. And get some lunges in, you look like you work for the council in that shot.
  6. You've hit the nail on the head there, supply and demand. This is a great job, so lots of people want to do it, therefore wages are low.
  7. i'll bet he's gone by now mate, they seem to fly the nest while they are still quite fluffy. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/picture-forum/16795-my-owls-have-fledged.html
  8. I took some rubbish to the council skip today, I was delivering logs and I chucked a couple of our old sash windows and our old fridge freezer on top. When I got to the skip there was no one around, (our town dumps have recently been re-furbished and now have about three skips and a place for fridges) I went into the office where there were 4 guys sitting around drinking tea. I asked where I should put a fridge and some old windows, I was told I couldn't dump as I was a commercial vehicle, I was prepared for this and dug my heels in. I was a tree surgeon dumping a fridge after all. so they said I would have to fill in a form and could be subject to a huge fine. So now I could dump my stuff, one of the guys managed to ease himself off his chair and come outside to help. "the windows go in that one and the fridge goes round the corner" he said. " Ok i'll pass the windows down to you" I said. He laughed in my face saying "I'm not lifting anything" and walked back inside, he seemed really surprised that I expected him to help. so I had to do it all by myself. Why it takes 4 men to run a re-cycling facility that serves a town of 2500 people is a mystery, they probably get 30 cars a day.
  9. If your guestimate of the size is correct you're looking at 6.5 ton. so allowing for a wee bit of taper say 5.5-6ton.
  10. It does make you wonder how you'd react given the circumstances, a few points; they could not be ordered to do anything, being unarmed as they were, so any action they did take would have to be off their own bat. They will have to live with the decisions they made. Its also worth noting that in an area like that the nearest armed response would have been miles away. I reckon my nearest will be at least 40 miles.
  11. I quite fancy one of these: http://www.savagearms.com/images/firearms/finder/ginormous/11bth.png
  12. i have finally decided to get one, having used the silky one with the 4 extension handle, I was just wonderind wether there is anything else on the market worth considering. we do not to powerline work so its really just down to performance and ease of use, are the fibre glass ones worth considering?

    new hitch

its 67cm eye to eye, I like to tie the first half doubble fishermans and then theother slightyy short, then load it and get them to settle down before cutting off the waste. 65-70 cm would be about right. Yes my rope does twist. you just need to climb some big trees to let it unwind.
  14. anyone got a picture? its not coming up on the treeworker site for me.
  15. whats it for?

  18. You'd need to ask stevie really, I have relatives in bingley and wetwang so can stay over a night to break up journey. but if i am traveling with mr blair maybe he won't want to saty at my mums lol.
  19. why not make it the day before or after jonsies show, then us traveling down can break up the journey with a yorkshire stopover.

    new hitch

I see now, found a pic, its not the same as what I have been using. At the end of the day all hitches are pretty similar variations on a theme, the XT is a new one on me, although its halfway between what i did and a vt. I would imagine it works pretty similar to what I have been trying. I like the stiffness of the mine, when the hitch breaks it gets the top wraps moving up before the hitch compresses too much, minimizing sit back. the XT:4 wrap XT Hitch back on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

    isn't that a vt then??

    new hitch

how do you find it steve?

    new hitch

its 8mm mate, early days yet in terms of performance, but it looks promising. be interested to hear others thoughts and experiences.
  24. has anyone got an old well used peice? why not cut it open and check the core for signs of melting / glazing.

    new hitch

here's one to try, (experienced guys only) its essentialy the bastard offspring of the VT and the howard. I have been climbing on the howard for a while now but always looking for improvement I came up with this. I have always found the VT annoying when using it with the hitch climber; too short a cord and it jams up, get it running nice with a longer cord and there's too much sitback when ascending (I like to haul inderneath the HC). If you only ever use the traditional VT Technique of pulling a few handfuls through every so often then the longer cord VT's fine, but it kind of defeats the object of the HC IMO. I tried this yesterday on a decent sized oak, my old cord was past its best and i was using a brand new piece, I tied this as an experiment, it gripped well streight away and tbh i forgot i was using it. It never needed dressing or tweaking and performed really well, which is unusual for a brand new piece of OP. I think the full twist as opposed to a braid stiffens the whole hitch making it less likely to loose its shape, it breaks really easily after being loaded and there is very little sitback. I can measure the eye to eye length of the cord if anyone is interested. Anyway, here's a couple of pics, it has some wraps at the top, (use as many as neccessary) and then instead of a braid (left side leg goes right and vice versa) add a full twist (left side leg goes right round the right hand leg and back down the left side, vica versa for the right leg). then round the climbing line and repeat.
