  1. Agree wholeheartedly on the keen pricing side of things, have done it in the past but you know hoe sometimes you just get the gut feeling that this one is going to be serious work for all involved....price HAS to reflect that. I've had a week of big tree takedowns to price, and I think the main issue is most clients (potential) expect us to be happy with earning £80-100/day, have to explain quite often the other costs that a professional company has to cover (we all know what they are). However, much we can justify the price, I'd seriously have to think before I spent 3k on household stuff. Like you say, let those people who want to work for peanuts do so, and work themselves bankrupt. Move on, get the next price in!!
  2. Problem is, after the first day you'd be falling over the arisings all the time, gardens too narrow.
  3. No, that was to take away as well, must say the skip idea sprung to my mind also. No chance of a crane here!
  4. Update on said tree. Got the costings figured out, sent off the quote 3k. Received an email yesterday saying the job's mine................if I want, for..........£1500. Wrote a polite email back explaining how I came to that price, manpower, days, fuel, insurances etc etc and said he should bite the hand off of the person who's willing to do the tree for that price. It made me check and double check my price, but I'd stand by it, and I'd love to see how long and how well the other company do the tree. Shame really, would've been a great takedown.
  5. No shots unfortunately camera not with me, I know its going to sound convoluted but its a particularly big 70footer if you catch my drift. Equal spread to height I reckon, I'm normally pretty good on timings on jobs, and something about this one screamed out to me "need a day or possibly more contingency" you know sometimes you just get that feeling? Still to get the price in but I think solely down to size of wood and distance to vehicles it's looking like at least 4 days for 3 men possible 4 men! Like I say BIG tree!! I shall keep y'all unformed
  6. Yep, most of the fences can be lifted, and indeed it it a riggers dream. Groundsman's nightmare!! Was thinking about around the 3k mark possibly more? Fingers crossed.
  7. I pulled out last year, haven't missed it at all. I'm chuffed because I despised Yell and hated giving them my hard earned!! You won't look back, wise decision
  8. Looked at a HUGE takedown today, Poplar, easily 70ft tall and not far off 70ft spread. Covers five gardens, all with poor access, too far from the road for crane to be used, so chogged down and hand-balled through the gardens. It's about 6ft diameter at the base!!! It's a real monster, we are talking MS441 with 26inch bar at 50ft +. Gonna make me sweat for a good few days that one. I reckon easily 1 week's proper hard graft Client said to keep costs down he'll keep all the branches and wood, but I reckon just one limb will fill his garden up! I'll put the price in (yet to be worked out) but I'll be surprised if he goes for it, I find people quite often do not appreciate what's needed in big takedowns like this. Be a great one to get and break out the old head-cam again though. Random post I know, just wanted to share.
  9. I think it's to do with the high carb count versus the high protein count. My missus knows a lot about this stuff and tells me about it frequently...I normally smile and nod!!!
  10. Where's the tree at? May have some Hiab contacts for you?
  11. Four days Ross....that sounds like a big ole tree. Take care up that one mate. Plenty of wood for next year's log though!!
  12. Yale XTC Magma blue 13mm. Been reading up, maybe a tad on the thick side? Problem is I've tried the smaller dia ropes in the past and my hands do not want to grip!!!
  13. I've just brought one today, same age, really, really tidy for £200. Most pleased with myself
  14. Today was my first outing with a ART ropeguide and Spiderjack combo. Gotta say after 15 years of climbing with cord giving me my friction that this set up obviously takes quite some getting used to. Found limb walking particularly tricky and the control of the decent seems to take lots of practice. I will persist, as if's its half as good as it looks on the Spiderjackery vid on youtube I'll be well chuffed. Out of interest, all you converts out there. How long did it take you to get proficient at it ??
  15. Thanks, watched the vid, seems straight forward enough. Gonna play tomorrow!
  16. Treated myself to an ART rope-guide, arrived today, must say looks like a great piece of kit, but I need a few pointers? I think I can see how it is installed and used, but retrieval of it once I'm down and on the deck needs a little clarifying in my head??? Any help, advice, pointers would be gratefully received. I have tried to google and youtube it, but there really doesn't seem too much on it. Once again thanks in advance, really looking forward to using it.
  17. The lid is a petzl vertex (I think) and its just outside of Faversham.
  18. I know. It's a bugger. Looked at it an hour ago on iPhone and iPad and sound was still enabled.
  19. Thanks. I know they make me look like a squaddy wannabe but it had been raining and these are army surplus goretex and it has to be said they are the best waterproofs I've had. Naturally there are ballistic underneath.
  20. Bit gutted about this one, set camera up for time lapse and due to the cold weather the batteries failed giving me only 120 shots, had a little flip cam on me as well so filmed the felling aided by a tractor to help pull the big ole stem over against it's natural lean, great few days work, felt it towards the end though. Must be getting a little old for it! For some reason youtube blocks the audio on PC but allows it on Iphone etc...strange. Copyright issues, shame tho because I'm pleased with the soundtrack. Any how peeps hope you like. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwkUP6wqeUE]Tree surgeon arborist Horse Chestnut fell http://www.abouttrees.co.uk/index.php - YouTube[/ame]
  21. Here's one we did a few weeks ago. The Lady of the house of the house only wanted minimal stuff off, and I wasn't going to argue with her!!
