  1. If I were I would be trying to save children, not cutting down trees for a living.
  2. It matters not. What matters is the public. People like you and I giving what we can and what we feel we should. If you feel it's not for you then that's your choice. I still wonder how its possible watch the footage and feel so disconnected that a charitable response isn't needed. With regards to the "celebrities" it seems to me that they are indeed "the face of the moment" but they are obviously upset and disturbed by what they witness. When they make their visits to these deeply depressing situations that children find themselves in. They may, indeed be using this opportunity to forward their careers but lets look at what help is achieved in this process. If we have to put up with Wand Erection for another few years having the trade off for increased awareness and money for people in great need then I'm sure we can all do so.
  3. I'm on my 4th text of the night, keep watching the VT's. crying and then texting. Not too sure how any one could watch the footage and be compelled to do any thing different. For me these events really started to hit home when I had children. We're moaning a lot here about business, under-cutting and such, but I'm sure the vast majority of us can still afford to put food on the table etc etc. It's my opinion of course but life can change so fast, certain things are out of our control, any one of us could find our selves on need of help at some point. My ethos is give what you can, when you can.
  4. I think that it what I'm going to do.
  5. More of a friend of an acquaintance? Still probably worth giving the nod to though!
  6. I've got a horrible feeling I may know the subbie he's got in mind. Heads up??
  7. Very true on both accounts Mr. Bolam.
  8. I actually know the other company who looks like they are going to get said job, this makes it more puzzling for me as I know he does have all the relevant quals, insurances, gear etc etc. I cannot see how he can turn this job around and still manage to make a profit. He just can't. The addition of the cherry picker indeed does kill the job but even before hired in plant, my quote would have been higher. Gut feelings aren't to be ignored, the tree just didn't look right to me, like I say, maybe I'm just getting old and too sensible, but I really think not. There is a great chance that the tree is perfectly climbable and safe and that nothing awry will happen, but I think none of us would forgive ourselves if we made the call to climb or send a climber up when we had a nasty feeling about it, ignored it on the basis of costs and something did go wrong?? With regards to the other companies equipment, it's the usual set up that I guess 90% of us on here have . Efficiency wise I cannot speak for them, but I know we are efficient in our running and execution of jobs. The tree is tricky, what with BT cables, road, footpath (to primary school) and questionable structural strength. Sorry but you'll just have to take my word on it.
  9. So do you quote on site? I've always found it easy for me to quote later on. You are right. It's impossible to tell if they are 100% price orientated on he phone or via email enquiry. It's soon apparent upon meeting them though I find.
  10. I think SOME punters worry about price, price, price. These are the one's that Mr. Bolam correctly says we need to stay well clear of. Let the uninsured, unqualified "workers" have them. As a trade/profession we need to attract client who value their trees and knowledge in how to care for them. I think the price issue is more relevant when people have a tree that they see as a headache and just want rid of!
  11. My quote would have been in the thousands. MEWP & 3 men for 3 days min. The quote she has gone for is £800 all in. Shocking.
  12. There are indeed easier and safer ways to earn a crust. Unfortunately 16 years ago tree surgery got under my skin.
  13. Yep..... A travelling one.......
  14. Prize is a dead goldfish in a plastic bag.
  15. No. I haven't yet said what my quote was going to be. I hadn't fully costed it. Had a feeling that lowest price was going to get it. That's why I gave her a bell before sending the quote in. Good job really, saved me wasting even more time.
  16. I'm not even entertaining "competing" with these outfits. My clients know what they get with us.
  17. I think the £400 for a desperate crew is right... but not the 3 day part!!
  18. Good guess as well Shane And good advice also
  19. It will indeed catch them out, but at what cost. The client told me that she "didn't care if it were unsafe, presumably the contractor has insurance and that it was down to him!" Nice attitude!!! I've got a wife and daughter that I'd like to continue seeing for a very long time, so it's all about reducing risks! Must be getting old!!
  20. Not bad Rupert. Close!! Nice next of the woods Bedgebury.
