  1. Yes, but they should just be honest and say that they charge so much tax on fuel because they need the money - not make up some story about the environment!
  2. I heard on the tv once that you would need an area the size of Africa to grow enough crops just to keep England in bio-diesel.
  3. I reckon your wife has got the right idea. London would be something a bit different, you must see your fair share of countryside when you're out and about. There's no other city in this country that compares to the capital.
  4. Personally I would never pay rent, I think you should always try to buy. Even if you can't afford to buy a yard/field/woods out-right you should find out how much the rent you would be paying would allow you to borrow.
  5. There's money to be made in firewood. I always wait till I've got 5 or 6 loads on order then 2 of us will do them all in a day, at £90 a load that's reasonable money - and you're keeping your yard clear, got to get rid of it all somehow might aswell sell it!
  6. Absolutely, a Toyota Hilux is a very useful tool to have.
  7. You can chip a lot more smaller pieces of timber at the same time in a 6" chipper than you can in a 4" (i.e. the tail end of a branch). And if you're after a small chipper for a low price I would go for one of the new Greenmech Eco-Arb machines - they've got a 6x9" aperture instead of the 5x5" that you get with a petrol Timberwolf. Also, the petrol Greenmech comes with a 27hp Kohler where as the Timberwolf has got a 20hp Honda. Don't think there's much difference in price either.
  8. I didn't find that becoming VAT reg'd made any difference to my private work, all of my serious competitors are VAT reg'd anyway. I think people expect to pay VAT when they employ any type of tradesman. I pay my VAT quarterly, how do you get to pay it monthly?
  9. Talking about buying a couple of carabiners! Bit different to being owed loads of money from a ltd co! Most big businesses are Ltd Cos or PLCs - fact. Might have something to do with corporation tax?
  10. Just got an email back from Buxtons - They say that while 3 way crabs are recommended for climbing they still sell screwgates for the same purpose. It's just down to personal preference.
  11. What are they selling them for then?? 99% of businesses that do a decent amount of trading become Ltd Co's. I would rather deal with a Ltd Co - they can't just up sticks and disappear without a trace. With a Ltd Co everything is out in the open - directors names and addresses, turnover, profit, amounts paid out as salaries, etc... Much less likely to find a disreputable Ltd Co than a sole trader when there is so much info publicly available on companies.
  12. Just the way I do things, everything always planned out then just try and stick to the plan!
  13. Take a look at Treesunlimited when you've got a minute - they sell ISC style crabs for climbing with a screwlock gate. Then take a look at companies house - no mention of the afore mentioned, hardly a serious dealer!!
  14. Between myself and my accountant I've always got predicted turnover & profit estimated for the next 3 years on paper. If you've got a good accountant the predictions should be pretty acurate. I would never suddenly double what I charge halfway through a trading year, you should factor in an increase in your rates in advance.
  15. ???? Buxtons, Honey Bros, Stanton Hope - they're definitely serious players in the supply of arb equipment in the uk.
  16. If, at your year end, you look likely to exceed the VAT threshold in the following years trading you should register for VAT immediately - not wait until you actually hit the threshold. The scenario you describe should never happen, unless your accountant was asleep at your last meeting.
  17. orange crap - that'll be too much tea:scared:
  18. Agree. I only use 3 way crabs. Just trying to point out that some arb suppliers still do sell screwgates for climbing, don't know why some can't just accept this?
  19. You're clutching at straws Steve - what are they to be used for if not climbing - bit extreme for a chainsaw clip and not man enough for any major rigging applications, it's obvious they are being sold for climbing, not that you will admit it because you don't want to honour your bet.
  20. That's a load of cr*p - they've got even more 3-ways for sale - they trying to get shot of them aswell?
  21. https://www.gustharts.com/Products/Arborist%20Equipment/Arborist%20Climbing%20Equipment/Karabiners%20%26%20Maillons/Product/Camp%20Screwgate%20Alloy%20Karabiner/ Listed under arborists climbing equipment at Gustharts.com - you gonna buy me one Steve?? Please!!
  22. Obviously plenty of people still buy screwgates for climbing or there wouldn't be so many suppliers selling them.
  23. Thing is no carabiners have the wording "for climbing life support" wrote next to them when advertised. If you've got 2 identical carabiners listed next to each other under the heading 'climbing hardware - carabiners', one a screwgate, one a 3 way, it's pretty obvious that they're both intended to be used for climbing.
