1. ?????? Stump grinder hardly ever used - chipper used every day
2. LOL!! Knew that would get a response from you!
3. Don't think you could really compete nowadays without a chipper, and there's some things you've got to have - like a yard, storage for your gear, etc.........
4. Chipper/s, truck/s, 4x4/s, MEWP*, staff, chainsaws, climbing/rigging gear, a yard, tractor, log splitter, blower/other small machinery, ppe, PL & EL insurance, accountant, NPTC certs, storage for equipment, a wife that doesn't mind not seeing you very much. *only necessary if: 1. You have money to burn, or 2. You enjoy taking twice as long to do a job, or 3. You're a bit of a girl, or 4. All of the above.
5. I would imagine that gaining further CS units would count as further training, therefore eliminating the need for a CS30/31 refresher.
6. http://www.nptc.org.uk/faq/detail.asp?dsid=192
7. It's not legislation, NPTC certs are not law, it's just their own policy - contact your local training centre that run the courses and they will tell you. I sent a trainee on the CS30/31 course last October and he came back with all the latest info. The refresher course for the CS30/31 cert takes 3 days and costs £375 at my local centre. I need to do it but it means taking 3 days off which is a bit of a p*sser.
8. For your NPTC chainsaw certificate to remain valid you have to show evidence of further training every 5 years, i.e. a refresher course. This applies to everyone with an NPTC chainsaw cert no matter how long ago you did it.
9. How can you do tree work on your own? You need EL even if you just sub people in.
10. I can't see a 'D' sliding to well on that bridge.
11. It hasn't got a sliding D has it?
12. One of my staff unhooked the smaller of my 2 Greenmech chippers (as pictured in the 'chipper advice' thread) from the truck when it was 3 weeks old without applying the handbrake, it proceeded to roll backwards down the customers driveway and smash straight through their garage door and finally came to rest against said customers tumble dryer! One or two tiny scratches was all that was to be found on the chipper but the garage door was f*cked!
13. Just been looking at the poll that I set up in conjunction with this thread. I'm surprised to see that there are a few people who are trading as a ltd company but are not VAT reg'd. I wouldn't have thought that it was worth setting up a ltd company if you're not even at the VAT threshold??
14. Just checked - without tool/plant cover I'm paying £3007.53 for 5M PL and 10M EL for myself and 4 staff.
15. This is my other chipper on the back of the first Cabstar I had. It's a Greenmech 15-23 (6"x9"), 27hp Kohler engine, twin infeed rollers, and only weighs 660kg. We use it for smaller private jobs or when we're just taking one truck. I've run it side by side with a Timberwolf TW150 and the Greenmech easily out chipped it. It would be a good step up from the petrol Entec or TW chippers and only costs around £10k+VAT.
16. Yeah, we usually take 2 trucks out when using my big chipper. You could probably load your truck up just the same with a bigger chipper though - you'd just be going home a lot slower:( Legally I think even if you loaded your truck to capacity you could still tow a good couple of tons.
17. You must have the little petrol engined TW? I used to use one of those 7 or 8 years ago when I was an employee. They are handy little machines being so light and they do chip well. I used to think that they were brilliant but when you start using bigger machines you realise that they do struggle on anything over 5" and when compared to the 9 tons per hour that my machine kicks out they aren't really much good on bigger jobs or if you're working on the roadside and need to chip quickly. But they are a useful machine, just suited more to smaller stuff like in Logologists video. If you get a bigger chipper you'll wonder how you managed without it, the performance more than makes up for the extra weight.
18. I think you'll find a lot of new chippers come with the plastic flaps in the infeed.
19. I reckon Monkey Puzzle could do some damage!
20. It's not all bad because you're turning over more money, works out just the same as one man paying £500 for his own PL.
21. It does include tool & plant cover. What are you paying?
22. Greenmech don't make a 7" machine.
23. I've got one of these - Greenmech Chipmaster 260MT70, 10" capacity, 70hp Isuzu diesel. Got it brand new just over a year ago, always had brand new Timberwolfs in the past but they're pretty pathetic in comparison. Much better build quality, the disc blades are superb - go much, much longer between sharpens. With the Timberwolfs there's always something that needs doing. You get what you pay for.
