  1. ain't we all had one of them!!
  2. True, but people looking at buying a 35hp TW may not have the budget for a f*ck off great Bandit.
  3. If it's the safe-trak 16-23 you're talking about then I'd go for it - it's an excellent bit of kit.
  4. Agree, but VAT is just a tax like any other - all goes in the same pot.
  5. If you were doing tree work everyday then you would easily be over the VAT threshold. Just depends if you're working part time through choice or just because the work's not there. If you keep at it I'm sure you could have 5 days a week in the future, if you wanted, then you would have to be VAT reg'd.
  6. You must run an expensive car then, or just got stacks of cash in the bank:wave:
  7. The thing is it's the customer who pays the VAT, not you. You then claim back the VAT on your purchases in return for doing this tax collecting service. I can see it being a problem if you're competitors are not VAT reg'd and you're doing mainly private work. Most of my serious competitors are VAT reg'd so it's no problem.
  8. HMRCs reasoning for this is they say that a company turning over a larger amount of money (I think £64k at the moment) should be able to swallow the extra costs involved in being VAT registered. A load of rubbish I know.....
  9. Just wondering how many of you are either VAT reg'd or trading as a limited company? If you started out as a non-VAT registered 'sole trader' and then became either VAT reg'd or incorporated into a Ltd Co, or both - as I did - did this have any adverse affect on your business?
  10. so you got a thing for black helmets eh?
  11. I bought my Husky 395xp in Canada for £415 - brand new - over £800 in the UK! Did go over on my baggage though:argh:
  12. What I mean is, for example, if you commit a crime then you can expect to be found guilty. Last time we moved I reckon or estate agent made a lot more than £600 per hour out of us. Sorry to disagree, but studying trees or nursing is no where near as complex as law. Like you say, if it was that easy then we'd all be doing it. Who's boasting? And I think you'll find that it's your mrs that aquires wealth from looking after weak, vulnerable, needy people. I don't think that is distasteful. Good idea!
  13. Mine was secondhand when I bought it, I kept it for 4years, the only thing that ever needed doing was sharpening the blades. Plus, it's so light you can unhitch it and push it around easily. A great machine for a start-up business on a low budget.
  14. I started out with one of those. They're pretty hard going if you're used to a machine with rollers, but they're great value for money. If you think a handheld blower gives off too much vibrations try using a gravity feed chipper!
  15. I think everyone knows that if they employ a lawyer then it's going to cost a lot of money, and if you haven't got a chance of winning your case it's usually pretty obvious. And as for 'what overheads has a lawyer got?', well about the same as any other type of office work, e.g. banks, estate agents, financial advisers, accountants, etc. What a lawyer has done is 6 years of studying/training that most people would not be capable of doing.
  16. Maybe it's because they're not actually very good?
  17. I've got one, they're superb machines. The disc blades on the Greenmech range are brilliant -they work out very economical and they're easy to rotate/replace.
  18. If you're in an area where the EA are actively checking tree surgeons to see if they have got a waste carriers license you should just get one - they're pretty cheap and easy to get hold of.
  19. Funny how you don't see that many US cars outside of the US:aetsch:
  20. Exactly, you get unscrupulous people in all lines of work. A sh*te builder will end up costing you more than most dealings with a lawyer.
  21. I would just like to point out that not all lawyers prey on the vulnerable and rip them off. My wife is a lawyer and spends countless hours every week dealing with the legal side of Macmillan Cancer Support - for free. When was the last time you did anything of any worth for charity pecontools? People who don't know the first thing about tree work might think that we charge a lot of money for what they view as a simple job. You never know what's involved in a job until you do it yourself. And I'm sure if we could get away with charging £500 an hour then most of us would. Let's hope that you are not ever in a situation where you are in desperate need of a lawyer to defend you pecontools - you might end up agreeing that they're worth there weight in gold if they get you out of some serious sh*t.
  22. You don't know how much you earn? Your tax return must make interesting reading!
