1. If you did it by the book you would have had traffic lights or a stop/go board, plus given the highways department 3 months notice! It's ridiculous the amount of cr*p you need to cart around with you and the time setting it all up. I would of done it exactly how you did and if any awkward b*stards came along I'd politely tell them where to go..................the other side of the f*cking road!!
2. I pay £4000, that covers us for anything - including utilities.
3. Do you like the way I pruned this Monterey?? Looks good eh?? bob style!
4. A dumpy bag is about 1 cubic metre isn't it? I reckon you could get more than £35 for that. I sell 2 cubic metre loads for £90.
5. Mine just asked for a 'chainsaw certificate', pretty vague.
6. I own a ltd company that employs myself plus 4 others. We do private work and commercial contracts, you don't want to know how much my insurance is!! Spent tens of thousands over 5 and a bit years.
7. Correct. If you're using bonafide subbies it equates to giving your work to another business!
8. I would hate to have to make a claim that involved subbies who were working for me:scared:
9. Thanks for the advice, but I have spent tens of thousands of pounds on public and employers liability over the last few years! And they've always asked if I and my staff are qualified.
10. Correct. Treemotion, EL is a legal requirement if you sub people in. The law changed in 2005 so that Ltd Companies that only employ their owner don't have to have EL insurance. And anyway, if you've got EL why do you insist on your subbies having their own insurance aswell? To be a bonafide subbie in this line of work you would need to be using your own truck, chipper, saws, climbing gear, take all the sh*te away yourself - sounds like an expensive way of employing people.
11. So would you f*ck a nice mature oak up for a million quid? I don't go with this 'it's not just about putting food on the table' line. Surely there would come a point when money talks - even for you.
12. Don't talk utter sh*t. The NPTC courses are primarily about H&S, do one of the courses and you'll find out - it's all they talk about!
13. Talking about OS coordinates, not 'just off the A30 halfway between here and there'.
14. It is possible to find decent people to work for you who have only just passed their tickets, not everyone is a jumped up little ****! Some of the companies who I do contract work for would never have taken my company on if they thought that I had staff who weren't qualified working for me. You say that you get guys in to work for you who've got their own liability insurance - you do realise that this is meaningless? If you sub people in then you have to have employers liability by law. Also, if your company is doing a job for someone and one of your subbies drops a log on someones head and kills them then it will be your insurance that the claim is made against not theirs. As someone who subs in other workers you are classed as an employer.
15. Chainsaw tickets are only needed if you're using a saw for work purposes.
16. I don't think an insurance company would be satisfied with you telling them that you've got years of experience.
17. Personally, if I was taking on another employee I would rather they had the tickets with no experience than the other way round.
18. You should only be asked for your tickets in the event of a claim.
19. You just have to prove that you know what you're doing - problem is your tickets are the only thing that they accept as evidence of this!
20. Doing your tickets teaches you safety aspects that someone who's been doing trees for 50 years without their tickets wouldn't even know. Doing your tickets doesn't automatically make you a great tree feller/surgeon, that's to do with technique which you only learn with practice. The NPTC's are really just about safety.
21. So do you have specific times of year that are quiter? My work load seems to be similar all year round - if anything slightly busier between Sept and March.
22. Probably is a fair price. I always like to pay a bit less than that though!! I just know that you could pick up something similar, perhaps not in quite as good condition, for a lot less.
23. But it's like all the other debates on here - do you get a waste carriers license? do you get your gear checked for LOLER regs? do you get an MOT for your truck? You should do all of these things by law. Everyone on here seems to have different ideas on which laws it's okay to ignore!
