  1. Is your tube circular or square in cross section? I think a round pipe is neater than a square one.
  2. Send as much paperwork as possible. At least 60 pages of A4. It worked for me. Twice. Bull***t baffles brains.
  3. You obviously failed to notice that the 25PH is just a 35DH with a petrol engine. If you think your lecturer is a nob tell him like a man ,rather than take the mick about a machine that he probably had no choice in the purchase of.
  4. It is. After 20yrs i still like a day out with my old mentor. Bit of a masterclass really.
  5. 10 acres plus. Lots of huge magnolias, rhodies and camellias. ( the house and grounds changed hands for approx £ 35 mil.)
  6. Phew. I'm glad I just got my boy a laptop and its a dell, they seem to have the most praise yet.
  7. I went for a day with an old boss. Felling selected trees in a huge garden by a country house. This was typical of the dozen Larch we felled. Its taken 2 men a month to fell, extract and burn up using forwarder, harvester and timberjack skidder. There is 2 weeks more yet. This is just a thinning. Look careully for Brian at the bottom of the tree.
  8. your right old Lawsons often pluck out the hinge rather than fold over.
  9. Sand? loamy soil on chalk is nearer the mark. I think that you where looking at leaves on the lawn.
  10. If you turned up with a holder skidder it is worth a try. Though not damaging the rest of the trees is a problem when felling.
  11. my 254 was great, my many 262's were more productive though. now a new 346 ( 50cc one)will run rings round the 254. I proved this 2 weeks ago while snedding 2m cube douglas firs. The ( very skilled ) bloke with the 046 stihl couldnt keep up.
  12. Dont know about guess the height , how about guess the girth.
  13. Did a rare subby job last friday. This was meant to be a little Ash pollard job for a local log merchant . I think he priced it in the dark. ( we are still mates )
  14. Refresher training does not mean retake all your tests. It means refresh your skills. Apparrently just taking one new CS module ie. large trees or wind thrown trees is enough to refresh all your CS units as you must prove the basics to be able to complete the more advanced module. Also training is not a prerequisite of assessment. I took my chipper and climb/rescue/saw in tree units without training. Had i failed one subsection of the unit , that is the only part I would have needed to retake.
  15. yes. and judging by the standard of work I saw one firm produce today the clients need to be inspected for insanity. I'm going back that way tomorrow to see if the 3 metre hung up branch is still over the road or in the road.
  16. Its gonna need a big disclaimer, and some clear pictures.
  17. There is always someone who will try to prove you wrong, I'm not gonna go broke trying.
  18. Valmets are used by scandanavian farmers as aricultural in the summer and farm forestry in the winter. They have fewer breakable parts hanging down that maybe poked by sticks. Since the demise of County they have become the ideal allrounder. Massey had a try with the 390T but as massey are now owned by the same company as Valtra(Valmet) their paths seem to be converging. The skid unit( axles, engine , gearbox) on some models is identical .
  19. I think the picture is a metaphor for the toll 2 years of arb has on your body.
  20. I cant remember now, he had a grade 1 and a tache, rode big bikes on the weekend. The only forwarder driver I can remember the name of was Billy McPhee. (valmet driver) He won a few forwarder driving competitions . When your over there go to Old Poltalloch its a little strange. I want to know if the big Sycamores still grow out of the ruins of the house. Do you know of old Robbie Who did lots of brashing in front of the harvesters. I was up there when Jimmy MacDonald fell off the side of the road to Dalavich and died, having argued with his wife and decided to walk home from the Ford hotel.
  21. you also need to be able to tell the front of a tree from the back of the tree. the secret is to look for the bog roll and you have found the back of the tree cos nobody $**ts in front of a tree.
  22. I've given up on buying new anvils as they are easy to fill up with weld and grind back to a sensible level. Without taking it off the frame too. For the doubters. ( why should I care after 11 years of service. When your chipper has lasted that long you can tell me otherwise.)
  23. I saw the tilhill brash baler working in Dorset about 6 years ago. According to the driver it was a trial effort. The brash and bales where full of soil and stones which blunted the chop saw in seconds. The only reason for having it was to remove the brash from sensitive heathland sites. It was an abject failiure. An expensive one at that.
