1. had this one for about 18 years...got it through a LOLER test this year...for the first time !
2. 50 this year...still 'avin' it!
3. they way I look at it, a tree surgeon is someone who cuts trees, be it well or badly...the public perception is pretty much just this...they don't know what NPTC is (and the majority don't particularly care). I have my City and Guilds in Arboriculture...nobody has ever asked to see it (and I have never needed it to get work). I also have all my NPTC units (although some are up for refresher). People do ask to see these, but only Local Authorities and other such agencies. The way to view this, is do whatever qualifications you want to do, its all about you at the end of the day. Plenty of firms out there with no tickets, or bosses with tickets employing un-ticketed labour on the ground...they will just get on with earning a days money...no matter what better qualified, insured and skilled companies think of them.
4. used to swear by Haix...then the soles fell off a pair after 3 months. Its Miendl all the way for me now
5. one LA in our neck of the woods...every spec is 'back to the cuts'
6. I watched this for the first time tonight...I came away feeling very sorry for those people...the Romanians especially, you can't blame the poor buggers for coming over and trying. Trouble is, they are being brought over because they will work for longer...for less. They will be used and abused. Not fair on them and not fair on the unskilled Brits chasing the same jobs..SAD.
7. I wouldn't hire it out Terry, I knew a freelance climber who had one and someone drove a landrover over it! I've used these before and they are great, I've been rigging for 20 years and got by without one (and as you know, I do lots of big dismantles). I would say, if your going to hire out rigging kit, you'd have to be a freelancer...and you'll make more money with your own trainset than as a hired-gun anyday.
8. http://www.zipvit.co.uk/ pay less, get more. I take glucosomine, chondroitin (for joints), Ginko Biloba (for white finger symptoms) multi-vits and cod liver oil (out of a bottle). Oh, and whiskey
9. what an awesome tree, must go and see that next time I'm on the Isel of widget
10. top lunging chap!
11. I've always looked at NPTC units and 'certificates of competence'. I have a city and guilds in Arboriculture and I've feel its demeaned by the fact that anyone who's done a CS30 can slap a 'City and Guilds' qualified sticker on their wagon. :thumbdown:Whinge over!
12. I did it in one day...yes it was boring, no I didn't learn anything I didn't already know..but the instructor was a good egg and got us all through the day without falling asleep almost as pointless as my MEWP course....bits of paper eh?
13. good to see money being invested in bracing to retain habitat, instead of cheaper options!
14. I love Huskys for felling...but my Grunt saw, for everyday groundie work...is a Stihl 261C...good machine.
15. wore them a couple of weeks ago, working on a marsh.

17.
got a friend over in rochester, who needs some treework mate...send me your no and I'll forward it to him mukha <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/smile.png" alt=":)" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

18. Sad that we have such people in posts like this in Government. Of course, its all about making money out of building houses in former woodland at the end of the day....how about leave the ancient woodland and plant thousands more trees anyway?
19. well I started at 30...50 next year and still climbing 5 days a week. I think it depends on what you've been doing before you start (ex-non-REMF military blokes can start well into their 30's - most are fitter than your average 20 year old). I want to start winding it down from next year and getting the second climber up and having a bit...he's learning fast...and is 32 and fresh out of the Army
20. Nope. no way...been putting far too many hours in the last couple of months..this will be my Old Mans last Xmas....sod the work...I'm spending time with him and my family.
21. got one more days work tomorrow with my twins...looking like its gonna be a tough one...then the phone is going OFF!
22. thanks fella's..will pass on those links

25. can anyone recommend a trainer in Lancs for a mate of mine please?
