  1. mine's got a real steady weep somewhere. were it my old landrover id say it's only leaking to let you know it's stil got oil in, worry when it stops leaking
  2. I was lucky enough to meet Prince Charles when he opened the technology block at our Grammar School. From what I remember, genuinely warm manner about him; sincere and not at all patronising. Ive at least one conservation/nature book with a foreword by HRH, not that I can remember which, and remember vividly the TV spot he did about the plight of our farmers. Funny really to think that his two sons are the kind of lads Id probably get on well with, again proving its not what youve got, it's how you are that counts. really refreshing to remember that not all those in positions of influence are two faced twerps
  3. Coningsby I think David, back to base in Lincolnshire. Short run for those machines!
  4. It's not a person's birth status that defines them as a person, but rather what they do and how they live their lives regardless of rich, poor, me, you, them. William is doing a fine job of cementing his place as one of our history's most loved monarchs. If his wife is anything like as gracious as she is beautiful, then I can look forward to their reign. Hope is one thing people need right now. They've just given it to a lot. I wish them every happiness. He's done his mother proud!
  5. Hydraulics are no problem tbh, I just saw the part description and thought huh?? About 90 quids worth of part so must do something. I'd wondered if it were something to do with clearing the chamber between roller and disc or under the disc but I guess that's unlikely
  6. Ive the garmin GPS60, and used the GPSMAP60, and theyre brilliant tbh. bomb proof and totally reliable. Saw the new GPSMAP62 in trail magazine and it looks another step up from brilliant. I bought a garmin patch antenna from halfords for a fiver which i stick on the truck roof on the way to sites and it gets a full signal right across the board with DGPS cant fault it
  7. Af'noon all, Just had a list of parts through to upgrade the mighty bandit, and one of them is the above, a 'cavity auto dump'. Ive my own theory on what it could be, but errm... what is it? how does it work, and if it is what i think it is, how does one retrofit it?! cheers Jim
  8. Chris is right. to the best of my understanding (some guesswork involved) the belarus 4x4s like that one use a shaft in the front axle and a drop box setup like a mog's portal boxes in theory, but as to whether they are chain driven or gear driven I wouldnt like to say
  9. I'll keep them small screen/slow internet friendly

Well, it got a going over this morning. sharpened up infeed roller, tightened springs, checked anvil gap etc. and then put it to work this afternoon for an hour and a half's solid chipping It's some bit of kit I can tell ya! destroyed 6 trees worth of brash up to and exceeding 6inches. that perkins up front just digs its heels in and chucks out some black smoke for good measure! got back afterwards, operated the throttle control whilst watching the linkage on the pump and realised the throttle was only opening half way to the stop! whats it gonna be like running balls out?!
  12. country for me farm born and raised, now got my own pad in the next village had a brief spell living in leeds whilst at uni. It had its pros and cons tbh.
  13. what Im not overly fond of is the obsession with 'heathland regen' as if it's the fashionable thing at the moment. Heathland regen = woodland degen, as others have pointed out, heathland is not a climax condition. That's not to say it isnt a valuable habitat, but it isnt a balance between ecology and productive land useage in the way that woodland CAN be, which is IMO what we ought to be concentrating on in this resource poor time. In managing woodland for its produce as well as ecology, the heathland will occur in the same way that it did hundreds of years ago. What concerns me is a heck of a lot of heathland being created 'just because'. This may not be wholly fair, but there do seem to be occasions of 'tunnel vision'

Ahh well unfortunately this was one of my VERY rare excursions south. Garth called it nessie because 'its all neck, and asked how it was pulling the loch ness monster along behind me! Should be back in Aviemore in a few weeks and then in the summer, so you're on for a highland gathering!

It's my first chipper Rupe. tbh Im well versed enough to know what I would ideally want, but I bought what I could afford. first impressions are that it's well balanced and light enough to pick the front end up and maneuver it by hand really quite easily, and I find it a lot easier than most whippy little chippers to reverse with the truck so for where I live out in the sticks where everyone has a decent sized drive and you count the cars by the hour not the minute, It shouldnt be too much of a problem. I dont do a lot of tight access domestic work. I try and concentrate on parish council jobs, woodland and other non-domestic contracts where the area isnt quite so saturated, so for what I paid for it, It'll do me just fine I reckon. at least for now. It's a compromise, but I'll play to its strengths
  18. the quick release shackles are good, but what concerns me about those is it still requires 'operator input' to release them. if we're working to worst case scenario, the worst case scenario is that you cant react quickly enough to release it. I would still want a weak link setup of some description, ether instead of, or as well as the quick release. fashion an unjoined ring of mild steel plain fencing wire perhaps, strong enough to position with, but with any appreciable force at all, and it simply opens and lets go
