  1. I'm a big fan of both saws. I think i'd go for the 346xpg over the 357 now that the new 346 is out. I've been using the 346 this week to fell medium chestnut about 25" across and some larch of a similar size. Worked really well. Done some really big 3 15" guidebar stuff with the 346 and it coped but it wouldn't want to do it all day every day but for smaller stuff its ace. I use mine for big stuff right down to coppice size stuff. Its also very good in the tree (when i do go aloft).
  2. Nice tractors. I like the jake mount best of both worlds really. I'll have a look a prices. Thanks for the info.
  3. Thats a good guide was going to put my Herts uni one up but that one is much better. Go into Waterstones Tony and check the academic book section there is normally a few good books how to write/reference.
  4. Well done! Is that as part of a college course or the Lantra ITA? Seems a lot of questions i think there were 2 or 3 sides of stuff to write for my side arm flail Lantra stuff.
  5. Its true. I've often though about why people don't get stabaliser legs made up for front/rear linkage and run them spool valves. Give you a bit more stability with the big stuff.
  6. Hand thought of that. Worth looking into thanks. As for them going at interesting angles with the crane on, that the biggest disadvantage of having it on the roof as aposed to just under the rear window. Stability can be an issue. I'd get the tyres water ballasted and some wheel weights a front block and maybe some belly weights too.
  7. I was thinking of getting a 570 or 580 botex crane to go on the newer valtra. Or A Kesla equivelent not decided yet. I was wondering on what you'd get for selling the crane? I was thinking it would be in the region of 2.5k? I think the trailer/crane setup is wirht about 6k
  8. You can do a degree or masters BSc or Msc respectivly. Both can be done by home study. I know with the MSc though you have to go to the uni each month to do an exam coursework too.
  9. Hi Just throwing around a few ideas for upgrading forwarders. Currently got a Botex 5050 on a 10 tonne trailer behind an Valtra A92. I'd like a roofmount crane on a bigger valtra. Just need to work out the sums to do it:thumbdown: I was wondering how much the just the crane on the trailer would be worth? Apparently its designed as a roof mount but bodged onto a long king post trailer. So i'm asuming they can part ways. I'd like to keep the trailer to use behind the new rig. Its a Botex 5050 5m reach 500kg lift at 5m and 1750 close in. Has continous rotor and a botex grapple. Could do with being repiped apart from the graple and extending boom which have been. Has PTO pump and 8 levers controls block. Thanks Andy
  10. Looks nasty. I'm glad it didn't hurt you too badly. I threw a 20" chain off a 660 which made a mess off the chain catcher and hit my boot. Didn't damage it but i thought my foot was bleeding. It hurt so much and ached for a day or so.
  11. Hi Jon, Nothing was wrong with it traded it in for a new Valtra A92 with a loader. The one as my avatar actually. Think it was '94 reg. As for why i didn't like it i just didn't like the cab it was an unplesant place to be. Everyone else loved it just not me. I tend to do a lot of tractor loader/skidder/forwarding stuff and doing it in an unpleasnt cab just makes it more hard work than it has to be. 10k is a good budget for a tractor you could probally pick up one with a loader too for that money. Have you looked on farm trader they have some 390s for about 12k 4wd too. Also Wilsons have a Valmet 665 85hp tractor in for 12k. Andy
  12. About 2 years ago we sold off our MF390 4wd with a loader for 10k. I hated the thing but it was a good little tractor for out in the woods.
  13. You'd get quite a solid D22 Nissan Navara for that money. There is a 04 plate Navara D22 double cab sport going for 5790+vat with 50k on the clock and a mountain top. My one does 470 odd miles on a tank on diesel so its quite economical to run. The suzuki's eat fuel my friend has one.
  14. I don't think ours is. I seem to remember my trainer saying that they're not. I can see why would be though.
  15. Some needs to be checked 6months such as the lifting strops and climbing ropes. Rigging gear would be once a year.
  16. I think my breaks are wearing a little. Might take it in next week to see if they are bad. I've done about 60k on mine. I'm thinking of geting a s/h 57 plate D40 as a replacement.
  17. LOLER man comes twice a year to the yard. On 6 month intervals he looks at ropes, strops, shackels and the like. He looks at the front end loaders of the tractors but i think thats under PUWER rather than LOLER as i think they are exempt. LOLER man does look at the crane but under PUWER. I don't think they need to be inspected. Juts make sure thats its plated with its SWL as we got brought up on that. I think if you can change the grab on the end then it might need to be. As a side mount flail arm needs to be LOLER'd if you take the flail off and add a clam shell bucket or a ditcing bucket than. I'm quite sure that a timber crane doesn't need it as long as its doing it designed job. Stick something on it the end and it might.
  18. Is it the D40 or D22 Navara? I have D22 one (04 plate) and at the MOT at 40kish i think the back break was sticky but they freed it up and a break line was leaky. Its not really abused mostly road stuff and some offroad but mainly nice tracks. Never really loaded up either just kit. That was at the Nissan dealer as well i can't fault them for service quality though.
  19. I'll drop Basil (Will) a text get his input on the matter. He does a fair bit of coppice with a Keto 51 head. He is based in Essex.
  20. Yes they are. Might be worth doing with the <3" stuff left over from doing firewood. Be a quick burn but you'd get a few bags from it.
  21. I think Chestnut fence posts last longer than Oak too. We tend to make all our fence posts out of the stuff. I'm also burning a whole load of chestnut in the stove at the moment. I think you'd get more money for firewood than for charcoal. I think i'd cut it all for firewood. Can do it all on the harvester that way.
  22. Are you looking for someone to do the coppicing work or someone to buy the coppiced product?
  23. Fantastic serice too. I'm loving my new woolpower socks and hat.
  24. I think most people do. I would if i had one. I think red has a greater sulpher content in it than regular diesel.
  25. Nice toy. Never used a tracked dumper myself but i've seen them used with other big kit on some other sites. I'd have the bed off and a sort of timber trailer/bolster pin aragement on it. Could move brash and thinnings on it that way.
