I cant remember but I know tajfun, igland and uniforests that I have seen on the back of smaller alpines have needed adaptors to get the geometry correct else you end up with a pto that's to short and often at a very sharp angle as they are designed round a normal 3pl where the winch is further from the back of the tractor Matty I think the common factor with most of them is to get them back away from the tractor.
  2. call kilworth ask for a price for the adapter 3pl needed for winches on the alpine, I think TomD has one see if you can get a photo off him sounds like you already knew that then. Most winches will need an adaptor to fit an alpine, the short link arms and off sets on the pto don't really work together
  3. [ame] [/ame] sometimes I wonder if the hp quoted for these are correct. This was on Cannock chase last week flailing off some rough scrubland (had been woodland about 10years ago) hence all the birch and oak scrub. its worth sticking in HD to get a better image of whats going through the flail
  4. I have always come back to stihl bio plus, I have tried the following, Oregon arborol, aspen, go part and suffered with bar wear. The stihl seems the most consistent and doesn't lead to excessive bar wear which is the problems I have had with the others. I am tempted to try some clarks supertack as if it will hold out on harvester bars it should be ok at chainsaw speeds
  5. don't think it would make any odds, the engine runs absolutely mint on it still so I don't think it would make any difference, if it had been on 24" cutting oversized day in day out then maybe but I don't think it has a huge bearing, if your using an 18" bar chances are a lot of the cuts will actually be under that length anyway especially snedding. its been on the 16 and 18s mostly and I cant say I would favour one over the other its just been swapped dependant on the job and which bar was closest on the work bench normally
  6. 13" sugi solid pro lightweight for early thinnings, 16" powermatch balanced really nicely for most jobs 18" sugi solid pro lightweight for bigger timber or when I couldn't be bothered to bend over as much snedding it was also fitted with an 8pin drive sprocket from new and I can honestly say it never lacked power
  7. nothings gone wrong on it really (a new side plate would have probably sorted it out) but im aware its 4years old and expecting it to last out another winter of felling without problems is a bit much, all my 346xpgs have packed up now so im running the 560 as my main saw unless im in bigger timber using the 372. I have only had the parts listed on this thread when it was run over and a replacement brake band. I wont name the oil as they saw me right over it and its not available now anyway as they pulled it from sale.

Well , I thought I would bump this thread again, I have today ordered my replacement 560xpg my one is now 4years old this week and has done a serious amount of cutting, the engine is as good today as it was 4 years ago but little bits like the side plate are causing some niggly problems, but not enough that you cant use it safely. Just the brake doesn't always click off each time you have put it on. So I decided to retire her after all shes been through, it will still be in the truck as a back up saw. Just hope the new one lives up to the big boots its got to fill just need to order some new sugi hara bars as my last ones got toasted with some dubious bar oil

  12. anyone using one of these, looking to replace my felling saw before winter and hearing good things about these, just wondered if they hype is to be believed or should I just shell out the extra $$$$ for another 560xpg
  13. that's good to know about the brake, I did wonder about the tirfor skyline route and do have the potential to do this, basically its a small volume of timber on a highly sensitive site, and as such the felling is a tiny part of the job and the main bit is clearing it off and burning up off site. with the long strop I assume this was as well as the strop holding the pulley up the tree?? I have the 3000 and its only going on an alpine, my biggest issue is the drums are small in terms of capacity but I was thinking about using something like 8mm on the drums. are the bits you have for a 3000 if so I would be interested in the spares Yep the one I bought has a high-leading frame that goes above the winch frame about 8ft up, I would be interested in any info on a 4000 with frame you may have as im aware there not actually a lot bigger unit than the 3000 and im looking at more and more small tricky to access sites with restrictions on ground movements.
  14. Anyone used the older manual lever clutch and brake type igland's for highleading? I'm aware this technique pretty much went out of fashion about 30years ago but I am keen to utilise it on a few sites and would be keen to pick someone's brains if possible. I'm finally sorting my igland 3000/2's out that have sat about for far to long, as I have been to look at a couple of jobs for this and next winter that require trees coming across some very soft ground and also up some short but steep slopes that we cant skid up or run kit over but all brash and timber must be extracted off site. Going to get the winch converted from county mount to 3pl as its going to have to go in on the alpine due to site access routes being very narrow (<6ft) so would be keen if anyone has done much highleading with this type of set up
  15. Don't handle as well on the road at all compared to road tyres so no fast cornering now. Noise isn't really bad but off road in mud etc it barely ever spins the wheels now
  16. I ended up getting the bfg s cheaper than the Coopers price also couldn't get the coopers in the right size for my disco 2 in the end

  18. thought I would bump this thread again, been out flailing a bit recently got a few more days to do before its back into the woods for winter don't under estimate the power of an alpine. That's 2.7mtrs of Seppi SMO SP flail on the back at 850kg
  19. as said done some bits with them like sprayer tickets etc, cant complain always been helpful and send info out etc, instructors and assessors have always been fine. Don't know what issues you have heard of but they always seem to have been helpful when I have rung them
  20. Are you talking about Dales Agricultural and Rural Training (DART) from Derby way or disaster arborist response team as I think the above post relates to. I have done a couple of courses with DART from derby and had no bother with them but that was a few years back, always seemed competitive on price
  21. no but then again we haven't got any to do this winter as no-one round here has bothered with planting grants for this winter so the tractor planter is parked up

BFG M/Ts ordered ended up getting 225/75 r16s at a respectable £97ex each as just about every other size of tyre that will go in a disco 2 wheel arch are either on a huge back order or not available for ages. These apparently are the factory fitted size on the commercials so I suspect that's why they are easily available! having lost traction again today on a slope, stalling and rolling backwards down it today at some speed into the brambles, I decided to get some coming forward rather than waiting till Christmas

  24. hmmm so general consensus is the kumho's I think I would actually need to go for the cooper SST pro to get the right size for an un-modified discovery as nearly all the tyre options are to tall or wide for a standard disco 2 wheel arch.
  25. After some new tyres for my discovery as I'm getting fed up of getting stuck on wet grass. And getting round the woods in winter is going to be important for me. I'm torn between these tyres and there is little to split them on price. Which is the better tyre in people's experience? I'm keen to keep some decent road manners and improve puncture resistance compared to my current road tyres
