  1. I could get the waste off walking it over the log.. I tried to sell leaving the log as a bridge, we could have cut steps into it and everything.. Unfortunately the island is not owned by the tree owner and they want the tree gone..
  2. Due to our continuing success Canopy Tree Services are looking for an additional member/members of staff: We are an ARB approved contractor offering high quality tree works throughout the East Midlands, Based in Draycott DE72 3NX. Ideally we would like an experienced qualified climber to be part of our full time team, but would consider freelance and part time positions. There is also the opportunity for the right individual to help/undertake surveys and consultancy work. Good rates of pay, regular hours 8.00-430, paid overtime, 28 days holidays, regular training, work wear, PPE etc... etc...
  3. It would have to be far bigger.. as nearest road 170m away.
  4. Has anyone used one? We have an oak that has fallen onto a small island. I estimate the tree was 15m tall with a 100cm DBH so probably 4.5 tons? I know we won't be able to lift the whole tree, but we can get on the island and strip it down. Access is tight and there are walls making up the banks that have to be protected on both the island and mainland so dragging out is not really an option. The distance between the island and the mainland is only about 3m. the ground conditions are pretty soft. https://hird.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/hird-maeda_mc405_spider_mini_crane.pdf
  5. The differences between a sole trader and a limited company – is it time to make the change? - Checkatrade Blog WWW.CHECKATRADE.COM Setting up your new trade business. Sole trader or limited company what are the key differences and advice to decide what's right for you
  6. I rate the 6 ton iveco's as an arb truck (especially if you have pre 97 drivers), although we have no longer have one as have moved to the 7.5 tonners. You do get a lot of truck for the money when buying used. I have not done a direct cost comparison but the bigger trucks are just better designed to carry the weight The regular checks are a pain but ensure the trucks are safe. The MOT is MUCH more involved.
  7. Arbtalk not a big enough forum for you??
  8. It was pretty straight forward to get a car version changed to a commercial if they have a commercial model. When we went from partnership to Ltd I did it to our Land Cruiser Colorado. IIRC I just removed the seats and seatbelts, blacked out the windows and sent a letter to the DVLA.
  9. Have you considered getting a personal vehicle and just claiming of the company 45p a mile for business miles. I have very different needs but I got bored of driving vans and wanted something with decent mpg and the ability to ferry the kids around.
  10. If you are 2 guys with a truck and chipper why not just set up as a firm and do your own work.. I am sure you could sub to ground control or someone as I think that was their operating procedure. I personally would be worried about all my eggs in one basket but it seems to have worked well for some. Or just freelance as individual climbers to local find and don't bother with the chipper. Also if you and a friend going in to partnership, be wary that this regularly ends in tears..
  11. It's difficult to make a straight comparison as there are other benefits from being Ltd. The separation from personal liability being prime.. When we did it (a few... years ago) the additional accountancy costs seemed to be about the same as the tax efficiancy savings.. But we also loaned the business a fair chunk in goodwill..Not sure if that is still allowed. That has also brought down the tax burden. In addition as an employee with a low wage child tax credits can potentially be claimed.
  12. I had only seen one "possible" case locally last year and also believed people were getting "over zealous" in the identifications... but this year I have been to places with numerous dead trees. On a bike ride a few weeks back it felt like I was at a front line. The ash close to home are still ok but as I got into Leicestershire there were many mature trees with symptoms..
  13. I don't justify the insurance fraud.. And if that is true then he may well be the dodgy character you are suggesting.. but the engine seized after 3 days. My guess is the buyer thought he was sold a nail and was ripped off, this may be why he isn't keen on settling any outstanding account with you. While torching a classic mog may offend many, to him it may have been the only way to get out of a financial hole.. Still wrong mind..
  14. Does anyone have any links to upto date information or papers. I have a client who wants to plant enough trees to offset 1 ton carbon per year. Cannell 1999 estimates averaged out over 100 years you would need 42 widely spaced oak trees or 0.37ha of conifers over 55 years..
  15. Had a ride on this "train" at Plitvic lakes in Croatia. They had at least 5 just like it.
  16. Timberwolf were doing 12 months free last year.
  17. They (We) don't want your pity, just consideration.. Cyclists are healthier, happier, fitter, less of a burden on the NHS who enjoy spending time with their friends. They are also predominantly white middle class and therefore more likely to be higher rate tax payers (especially the ones on £3000 bikes) and therefore I would guess contribute considerably more in TAX and therefore road upkeep than your average tree surgeon.. I cannot believe on a day to day anyone is held up for more than a minute. It may feel worse but I bet if you timed it you would in reality see what a fuss you are making over bugger all. Big sportives may be a huge inconvenience but so are may sporting events. I have been stuck in traffic for hours due to football and horse racing events clogging up the roads... How cycling makes you healthier and happier | ECF ECF.COM It is no secret that cycling provides health benefits, but it is amazing how just riding a bike to work offers extraordinary advantages. The Velo-city 2018 program will broadly focus...
  18. 99% of Mamils will own cars so all pay road tax, unless they have exempt vehicles obviously..
  19. There is a credible argument that encouraging bike use to Dutch or Danish levels could do more than perhaps any other single intervention to save the NHS from collapse. It could even greatly mitigate the crisis in adult social care. The 'miracle pill': how cycling could save the NHS | Environment | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Cycling can make people healthy and live longer, and cut public health costs, so why can’t it be prescribed to the nation?
  20. You would be surprised at how often lads wonder around with their laces undone.. The twist system is great on cycling shoes easy to tighten or loosen without having to stop.
  21. Pretty sure the Boa system was been developed for lycra clad cyclists.. (Sorry cross thread discussion..)
  22. Whatever you do has some impact and while I applaud the sentiment to try to reduce your footprint there are so many unforseen consequences that make it is nearly impossible to make properly informed decisions.
  23. The Impact of a Cotton T-Shirt | Stories | WWF The Impact of a Cotton T-Shirt | Stories | WWF WWW.WORLDWILDLIFE.ORG Whether it’s reducing waste, saving energy, or being a conscious... I am sure some one has worked out the comparative environmental cost of polypropylene vs cotton. But I would not be surprised if in the life cycle when you include washing and drying cotton will be worse than man made.. I have helly hanson lifa shirts that our 15 years old that I used extensively. No way cotton can take the same abuse..
  24. One of the issues with being a rural based arb... Farmers can do it.. I saw this on a bike ride and thought I would share.. How many Health and Safety failings can you list..
