I got a bike seat and some cycling gear. It was cheap..clothes were too small.
  2. Are these self employed day rates or paye employee rates?
  3. Many tree firms have and do use (including me) freelancers/subbies who should really be employees. I do not know if anyone has come to grief but the potential repercussions could be very costly if done over years..
  4. I am more likely to believe a BBC programme that has researchers and are looking at the real numbers than hearsay from a few self employed blokes down the pub. I agree tree works is at the low end but maybe not as low as some suggest..
  5. The point is the HMRC will think he is employed, there used to be a form on the HMRC web site, where you answered questions and it said if you were employed or an employee. I can't find it.. Am I employed, self-employed, both, or neither? WWW.LITRG.ORG.UK Whether you are employed, self-employed, both or neither will make a difference to the amount of tax and National Insurance contributions (NIC) you have to pay, as well as how you pay...
  6. While I agree it is difficult to find decent staff other trades are NOT getting double the money. Radio 4 More or less made some interesting points. Go to about 12 mins in. A quick summary is lots of these so called "average wages" are rubbish and worked out from a day-rate of self employed contractors assumed to be working 6 days a week. According to the ONS Employed rates are as follows: Brickies are on £25k a year so £99.20 a day. Plumbers £30K a year £119 a day. Roofers £24K a year or £95.23 a day Electricians 31K a year or £123 a day As a comparison Nurses start at £21K or £83 a day. and graduate with £54K worth of Debt.. 7. We have been over the legitimate freelance/subbie vs employee many times on here. In my opinion if he is already working 2 regular days under your supervision the HMRC would probably already class him as an employee and you should be paying him holiday, pension, national insurance etc.. I believe you coul also be persued for non payment of tax if he is not paying it. Having him as an employee on the books even if it is part time is what hmrc want and might save you grief in the future. You can write all sorts of things into contracts but whether an employment tribunal would think they are reasonable if push came to shove is debatable.
  8. I am no expert but £4 to 6k sounds like quite a lot of hired in machine when needed or an old nail to buy..
  9. Burnett Crane Hire might go to Burton Phone: 0115 939 1788 The crane will be old.... But Peter knows his stuff and he is good value.

  16. This will never happen. We could get closer if insurance providers INSISTED on it, even then I am not convinced as I bet loads of people do tree work without the correct cover. Tree work is just not valued enough by joe public, bad tree work is unlikely to kill the client. Domestic tree work companies are often competing with tarmacers and gardeners and 9 times out of 10 price is all that matters. The more hoops we have to jump through the less competitive the accredited companies will become and there will probably be more untrained cowboys/farmer sons having a go... This could end up in increased accidents.. Beware unintended consequences. PS corgi changed to gas safe ten years ago..
  17. At least 5 of the 7 are Arbtalk members (if not active posters..) would be nice if they could comment.. Rather then leaving it for Paul to take the flack..
  18. I could get the waste off walking it over the log.. I tried to sell leaving the log as a bridge, we could have cut steps into it and everything.. Unfortunately the island is not owned by the tree owner and they want the tree gone..
  19. Due to our continuing success Canopy Tree Services are looking for an additional member/members of staff: We are an ARB approved contractor offering high quality tree works throughout the East Midlands, Based in Draycott DE72 3NX. Ideally we would like an experienced qualified climber to be part of our full time team, but would consider freelance and part time positions. There is also the opportunity for the right individual to help/undertake surveys and consultancy work. Good rates of pay, regular hours 8.00-430, paid overtime, 28 days holidays, regular training, work wear, PPE etc... etc...
  20. It would have to be far bigger.. as nearest road 170m away.
  21. Just hire with operator
  22. Has anyone used one? We have an oak that has fallen onto a small island. I estimate the tree was 15m tall with a 100cm DBH so probably 4.5 tons? I know we won't be able to lift the whole tree, but we can get on the island and strip it down. Access is tight and there are walls making up the banks that have to be protected on both the island and mainland so dragging out is not really an option. The distance between the island and the mainland is only about 3m. the ground conditions are pretty soft. https://hird.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/hird-maeda_mc405_spider_mini_crane.pdf

  24. I rate the 6 ton iveco's as an arb truck (especially if you have pre 97 drivers), although we have no longer have one as have moved to the 7.5 tonners. You do get a lot of truck for the money when buying used. I have not done a direct cost comparison but the bigger trucks are just better designed to carry the weight The regular checks are a pain but ensure the trucks are safe. The MOT is MUCH more involved.
