  1. I can't think of anything worse than having to go to Disney..
  2. I would rather a UK machine but there are not many about in the UK. There are loads of low hour used machines the size I want in the states and they seem good value.. It is perhaps more of a ballache then anticipated. Otherwise we would all be doing it..
  3. Cheers Bob, what have you imported? was it pretty straight forward?
  4. Sounds like it could be worth doing? What did you buy? What was the saving? Who was the shipping company?
  5. We need to update our old TW250. The best 10-12inch chippers seem to be the bandits and while there are a few low hour models in the UK they are about £35K-£40K There are lots in the US around the £25K mark surely it wouldn't cost that much to ship one over? Anyone imported anything similar?
  6. Can someone save me searching the arb suppliers? I need a new ratchet strap for our GRCS. Who does parts? I went directly to harken for the winch bits on the past but don't recall ever replacing ratchet strap.
  7. Not the best way to impress your employer..
  8. Only if your an idiot... You invest in machinery to make a job faster but your day rate is obviously more...
  9. But you surely price the job by how long you think it is going to take...
  10. Unless I am reading it wrong That is a bizzare way to price.. If it takes a day because you have to drag it through a garden then it's your day rate. If you can park under it and get it done in half a day then you charge for half a day. Your rates will obviously vary depending on staff, kit etc..
  11. There is or was a forst problems Facebook user group. I can't find it now but it popped up in my feed.
  12. I now ask the client for a budget then provide options for planting. Too many times I have wasted time pricing up a planting jobs to the clients spec, only for it to be way more then they are willng to pay.
  13. It can be difficult raising rates but you need to every year.. One of the reasons general rates for tree surgery is so low in my opinion is that oldtimers (myself included) don't regularly raise their rates. I need a minimum £550+ VAT for 2 men and small chipper and £660+ VAT for 3 men. Mog and 10 inch chipper should be significantly more. You will lose regulars when you ramp up prices. But is it really worth working for nothing..
  14. My preferred option would be 2-3 years old and Japanese. The major depreciation is done and they are still reliable. With leased vehicles becoming popular, you can get a tidy vehicle that has been regularly maintained as part of the lease. Unfortunately the UK market lacks most of the small mazda, honda and toyota vans ..
  15. I understand wanting to have fixed costs.. but that is £17,640 over the 3 years. A 3 year old belingo should sell for around £5,500. £4,000 a year is a lot to spend on having a new "reliable" berlingo.
  16. Not sure if the link will work. It was posted on UK's Tree Surgeons Facebook https://www.facebook.com/brady.viger/videos/2593500190705363/UzpfSTYyNjkxMjg0MzpWSzoxMjQ5MDk0MjU1MzAwNDc2/
  17. When trekking in new zealand I used to carry a rescue kit a few slings and some 6mm rope (I still use some to hold up the clothes dryer). I can't remember what it was but was strong enough to abseil off. You would need a suitable friction device.. if you tied it off you could use it like srt so would only need half the length then if used ddrt. Someone who still climbs try it and see if it could work..
  18. I admit I have not climbed in years and I think the whole 2 line thing sucks.. but trying to come up with a workable solution.. I get in some trees it's fine and often used to climb big trees with 2 ends or 2 ropes.. But can't see it working 90 percent of the time. Could the second line be used a bit like another side strop. You could keep the tail in a rope bag clipped to your harness and just use it to ensure your always tied in at least twice. This emergency line could potentially be much smaller diameter.. It sounds like a ball ache but might be less if a tangle fest..
  19. Since when has that been the "official line." Maybe in the 90's..
  20. A little bit over the top for most domestic work..
  21. Do these big specialist machines normally go out on a day rate? Or do owner operators get their own work. If you work out your numbers and can reliably fill your books on a day rate it sounds like a relatively low stress way if working. Probaby less stress than running a large crew with multiple machines to maintain and multiple customers to keep happy. What are the running/maintenance costs like?
  22. I am now here! What can I tell you? Pics and videos of it in action..
