Look good but some serious Euros...

We have the tracked GM and it's OK, but not in the same league as the OLD TW250 which I believe is around 70hp

Looking to update our old TW 250 chipper in the coming year. What bigger chippers are out there? What do folk recommend? We mostly do domestic work but am fond of the 10 inch chippers, I don't want logs to process.. We are NOT often doing site clearance which has become more specialised in recent years and will be mostly hand fed.. The TW250 is a great machine and it TW still made them, it would be top of my list. It is compact and chipps everything you throw at it.. We have a vermer BC 230xl and it is OK (not as good as TW), not going to rush to get another parts are expensive... Bandit spares also seem to be costly (we have 2 bandit grinders) What else is out there? Have the smaller 7 inch machines improved to a similar degree to the 6 inch machines (our TW230 seems to have the output our old TW190).

I don't intend to be preachy... we also run 3.5 ton trucks alongside our 7.5 ton trucks. But if I had the choice (drivers) I wouldnt bother with the 3.5ton trucks. The 6.5 ton iveco is in a different league from the 3.5 ton. It is more robust, clutches last longer, bigger and your normally legal. The bigger trucks are also way better value on the used market. I would recomend all owner operators do the training and get a bigger truck as you would probably save the cost of the training when purchasing the truck. It was pretty easy to find tidy low mileage 7.5 ton Ivecos for around £12k to £15k. We ended up paying £18.5 to find a decent 3.5 ton isuzu.

The 6.5 and 7.5 ton trucks are much better suited for tree work... What we need to do is clamp down on those running overloaded and make it normal to have an appropriate truck and licence..

From my experience in arb 2 years is not a long time. It might be different in forestry but climbers normally (there are some exceptions) need 4-7 years.

Our recent new employee has left for utility work.. So we are still looking.. Mostly, domestic work, good kit and team.

I have a huyandi i800. About half the money of a vw and better to drive.

We extended the drawbar on our grain trailer so that we could carry the hiab on the tractor. That would be another way of doing it.

One issue I keep finding with the more mature life style change employees, especially the ones with something about them, is that they often plan to set up on their own. (I was the same). But as an employer you don't want to invest in them as they just end up leaving and setting up as competition... Having your tickets does make it lower risk for an employer.

How valid is taking a picus at that height? The fungal bracket is significantly lower.

I have not seen the tree? It is road side, I don't believe it has been reduced.

Same Romanian is coming back for our other tired 2005 Iveco. We have not bothered servicing, MOTing or even removing logos, it's nice and easy and I believe we can charge nil VAT as it is going to export. Not sure I would fancy the job driving them the 1600 miles across Europe. My Mitzy pinin was rusting away and that went East a few years ago also with all the signwriting. I imagine a fleet of old canopy vehicles driving around Romania..

Anyone else sold an old truck recently... There seems to be a big demand for vehicles that are at the end of their life being exported. I had calls within hrs of posting one of our old Iveco's up for sale, with several people willing to pick it up tomorrow with cash.. Do they just have mechanics in eastern europe who can make trucks last longer as they get to a point here where it is not economically viable to keep them on the road..

If the council are making cuts at least try and get some redundancy pay and or all the training you can. The council will have to find you suitable work. Compared to most of us self employed types at least you still have a job that will pay you a wage.. My hands started giving me issues 6 or 7 years ago and it was pretty scary as when you are self employed tree surgeon your transferable skills are limited.. I had an exit plan to move over to consultancy and running the business and it has all worked to plan really. I haven't picked up a saw in 4 or 5 years and climbing kit well out of loler.. My new role is boring and frustrating with very little job satisfaction. I am busier then ever, but my fingers only go numb on long bike rides..

Does using the expensive diesel make a difference? My huyandai i800 needed a new and expensive dpf at around 80k. I started putting in expensive diesel every few tanks. It will go months only doing short trips ferrying kids about ..

While I know they are not the most suitable trucks (we have two 7.5 tonners already)they are still the backbone of our industry, youngsters can drive them without expensive training and great for domestic arb. I have three 3.5 tonners at the the end of their sule. I want to get rid of 2, keep the best for occasional back up but get a half decent replacement.. Our isuzu grafter has been great and is top of my list as a replacement. I like the Mitsubishi canter assume it is like the grafter Would like a toyota dyna as I rate toyota but they are rare What about the Nissan cabstar? I think it's a Renault which puts me off Had 2 transits and they were average Have 2 ivecos daily and never been impressed with 3.5 ton ones. We have a lr130 and while it has its place and will keep for ever don't want another... Ldv, VW not considered Mercedes expensive relative to others.. All the pickups are too small.
