  1. They (We) don't want your pity, just consideration.. Cyclists are healthier, happier, fitter, less of a burden on the NHS who enjoy spending time with their friends. They are also predominantly white middle class and therefore more likely to be higher rate tax payers (especially the ones on £3000 bikes) and therefore I would guess contribute considerably more in TAX and therefore road upkeep than your average tree surgeon.. I cannot believe on a day to day anyone is held up for more than a minute. It may feel worse but I bet if you timed it you would in reality see what a fuss you are making over bugger all. Big sportives may be a huge inconvenience but so are may sporting events. I have been stuck in traffic for hours due to football and horse racing events clogging up the roads... How cycling makes you healthier and happier | ECF ECF.COM It is no secret that cycling provides health benefits, but it is amazing how just riding a bike to work offers extraordinary advantages. The Velo-city 2018 program will broadly focus...
  2. 99% of Mamils will own cars so all pay road tax, unless they have exempt vehicles obviously..
  3. There is a credible argument that encouraging bike use to Dutch or Danish levels could do more than perhaps any other single intervention to save the NHS from collapse. It could even greatly mitigate the crisis in adult social care. The 'miracle pill': how cycling could save the NHS | Environment | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Cycling can make people healthy and live longer, and cut public health costs, so why can’t it be prescribed to the nation?
  4. You would be surprised at how often lads wonder around with their laces undone.. The twist system is great on cycling shoes easy to tighten or loosen without having to stop.
  5. Pretty sure the Boa system was been developed for lycra clad cyclists.. (Sorry cross thread discussion..)
  6. Whatever you do has some impact and while I applaud the sentiment to try to reduce your footprint there are so many unforseen consequences that make it is nearly impossible to make properly informed decisions.
  7. The Impact of a Cotton T-Shirt | Stories | WWF The Impact of a Cotton T-Shirt | Stories | WWF WWW.WORLDWILDLIFE.ORG Whether it’s reducing waste, saving energy, or being a conscious... I am sure some one has worked out the comparative environmental cost of polypropylene vs cotton. But I would not be surprised if in the life cycle when you include washing and drying cotton will be worse than man made.. I have helly hanson lifa shirts that our 15 years old that I used extensively. No way cotton can take the same abuse..
  8. One of the issues with being a rural based arb... Farmers can do it.. I saw this on a bike ride and thought I would share.. How many Health and Safety failings can you list..
  9. You did touch a nerve as cyclists regularly get a bashing by the Jeremy Clarkson fan cub.. Your post did not come across as live and let live.. It came across as someone who knows little about something and makes a stupid generalisation and the hate shown seemed hugely disproportionate indicating other issues with cyclists,, Cyclists wear lycra as it is the most suitable clothing for cycling in.. Same as surfers wear wetsuits, runners wear shorts and every sporting activity wears whatever is most comfy and practical.. You are presumably not offended by sunday league footballers wearing football kits? Anyone not wearing lycra on a bike is the fool.
  10. Why could you possibly be so angry about individuals keeping healthy (reducing the cost to the national health service) and socialising in a way that causes the smallest of inconvenience to others..? Find something real to get upset about. It's taken you an extra 30 seconds to drive to your gym, golf club, shops (fit in your pointless past time).. And being a twat you have probably driven in an irresponsible manner putting their and others life at risk as you believe you own the roads and don't understand the highway code..
  11. We have an avant, it's great but can't compare with others as never used them. The plastic panels are easily damaged.
  12. Seriously this should NOT be considered.. You are planning on climbing, using a chain saw in a tree and rigging over a road. You should not be working in a tree with a chainsaw on your own. There 'might" be a time when you want to lower something from the tree, possibly if your groundie is busy but not over a road..
  13. The planning inspectorate is even more tardy (under-resourced) then the worse lpas. They work at a glacial pace.. You would have to be very patient to test with pins..
  14. Especially if a sycamore is a plane..
  15. To be honest that pop was not really pollarded, it was topped or topparded. I know many (including myself) use the term pollarding on big pops, willows (..ash, lime, sycamore) but as I understand it a pollard should really be started from a young tree and needs to be maintained... Shigo was not keen so the americans and many brits are pretty anti topping. https://www.treesaregood.org/portals/0/docs/treecare/WhyToppingHurts.pdf
  16. Pretty much. Travel into the jungle by canoe, meet some village elders and hand out some cash for anyone willing to donate. Some shamen insisted they to go on drug induced spirit journeys first. But I don't think the university RAMS covered that aspect. They also had issues getting it back to the UK as a pilot refused to carry biological samples.
  17. Sperm count is apparently falling, I have a friend who has just returned from Colombia where he has been collecting semen samples from local indigenous tribe men with little contact to the "modern" world. We think tree work has challenges..
  18. I don't think it's testosterone.. Most of the young lads I employ have more then enough. Swaggering about puffing their chests and fighting is one of the challenges you have to deal with when employing groups of young men..
  19. Sylvagen have taken arb arisings from us in unchipped form. It might not be very profitable, but it can be an effective way of clearing the yard of wood.
  20. I am ready to be corrected but they don't look to have been applied very well. https://www.monsanto-ag.co.uk/media/1958/ecoplug_product-info-guide_2012.pdf
  21. I have also been told similar, but if you read the google maps terms and conditions you can use them in reports. You have to reference them.
  22. What has probably changed is a jobsworth planning officer or TO without a modicum of common sense..
  23. As Edward said specification from a photo is not really best practice. But that tree should retained if possible. The 2 lines I drew showed 2 different internal canopies either could be cut back to imo depending on the assessment of the trees stability. It would probably be better for the tree if it could be done in a staged manner but if you are concerned with the stability you are probably going to want to cut to the red line to make a significat difference and so probably wouldn't be happy leaving it at the orange line for a year or so.. There are also additional costs doing it staged. I might add I don't think the soil type is relevant or the other tree that fell over.
  24. That oak tree is worth retaining if possible.. It will likely tolerate a hard reduction it is trying to do it naturally itself.. You can see internal canopies to cut back to. It's what engliah oaks do.. thats why they can live 900 years.
  25. While I agree it's not difficult to get o licence, you can get a lot of 7.5 ton truck for the money and the extra payload means they are much more suitable.. When they break they cost more to fix... You do need 12 week checks, the MOT is considerably more involved and training drivers is costly and time consuming especially if you are an employer..
