  1. While I can't argue with it's growth rates and use as a crop is obvious, I don't think it fits in the UK natural environment. It is the wrong colour, shape and sticks out as much as any conifer plantation.. Also if we care about retaining native woodlands we also have to be very careful about these exotics going native and the damage they can do.. Holm oaks on the Isle of Wight or Melaleuca in Florida as an example.
  2. There is debate, some say the opposite is true and that the right to cut back to boundary over rules the TPO.
  3. A client is asking if we are ISO 14001 accredited. Who has done it? Is it worthwhile? Is there a lot involved?
  4. I could do with a couple of planks of wrc 220cm long to make some greenland paddles..
  5. I helped a friend of mine make a canoe a few years back. It took a lot of time, was heavy and was not even very cheap. I brought a plastic sit on top for not much more than he spent. 12 years later my plastic sit on top has been thoroughly abused (including having up to 12 children climbing on it), has been stored uncovered outside and leant to anyone who wants to borrow it. It is still 100% useable and I could probably sell it for £200-£300. The hand made boat went on a few trips and is now a pile of rotten plywood. Plastic has some fantastic applications..
  6. I replied: To to confirm that "yes they are covered"..? And they confirmed in English: Yes, covered on the Employer’s Liability section of the policy.
  7. From my reading hard woods are not ideal. Western red cedar the preferred wood of choice.
  8. Has anyone made a greenland paddle.. or does anyone want to make me one..
  9. It was also my position at the start, but Paddy made some arguments that made me think and after looking at my insurance documents I was not convinced either way. We can carry on as before..
  10. I probably should have just done this before posting.. I asked Trust: Please can you confirm if self employed freelance contractors working as part of our team are covered by our insurance? They are NOT bona fide sub-contractors as they would be working under our instruction But I am not sure they can be classed a Labour only sub contractors as they provide some equipment, chainsaw, climbing kit, PPE etc.. They replied: As they will be working under your direction and control, they would be classed as labour-only sub-contractors. That’s the key element regardless of whether they use their own equipment. Thanks. Administration Manager Trust Insurance Services Ltd
  11. Full time does not mean permanent.... You can work 5 days a week for one employer and still be classed as self employed.. This quota/number of days is often mentioned but I have NEVER read it in any official document. I filled in the the HMRC honestly - Check Employment Status for Tax and they say they are Self-employed for tax purposes..

  13. freelancer.pdf Did you look at the PDF.. The HMRC Check for employment Status say he is Self-employed for tax purposes...
  14. What can't he do? Be self employed? He can according the .gov web site. See pdf in op.
  15. That is the question. According to the .gov calculator my freelancer is self employed.. see the pdf I posted in the op. But he is not a bona fide sub contractor or a labour only contractor.
  16. My insurance states I have to check that sub contractors have insurance from a different company. So if my insurance believes '"subbies" are subcontractors I have to check they are insured with someone else... Changing insurers will have financial implications. I will contact my insurance but doubt I will get a simple answer. I probably should have done so before starting this thread but it came to mind as we offered paye employment to a freelancer who is working full time for us, but he would rather stay self employed..
  17. That is because after the last thread there were two opposing views and I was not convinced which was correct. I originally believed my freelancers were covered but not so sure now.. and it is something that we should be sure about...
  18. Cheers Paul. But if I understand it correctly a freelance climber to be eligible as self employed have to use their own tools. This means they surely can't be a labour only subcontractor..
  19. Paddy1000111 and others got quite heated about this subject in a previous thread and I had to admit I was not convinced either way. I had alway assumed like most of us that a freelancer was covered by my insurance. I have done the: GOV.UK - Check employment status for tax and happy that a freelance climber providing his on saw is classed as self employed for tax purposes (copy of the determination attached) But in my insurance Trust do not mention of freelance employees.. But does say Sub cntractors need insurance (with someone else).. 7. Employee means: any person under a contract of service or apprenticeship with the Assured or engaged by the Assured to perform a contract constituting the provision of labour only; while working for the Assured in connection with the Business. General Terms and Conditions 14. Sub-Contractors The Assured shall take all steps to ensure that all subcontractors that they engage maintain policies of insurance (with insurers other than the Underwriters) no less comprehensive than: a) employers’ liability coverage with a limit of liability of not less than GBP 5,000,000 any one occurrence; b) public liability coverage with a limit of liability equal to or greater than the limits provided by this Policy; and c) both such policies contain an Indemnity to the Assured as principal. The Assured: a) shall obtain written evidence of the above; and b) shall not assume by agreement, any liability that would not have attached to them in the absence of such agreement, including but not limited to, the assumption of liability on behalf of any sub-contractor or the waiver of rights of recourse against any sub-contractor. In the event of a breach of this term, the Underwriters shall have no liability under this Policy unless the Assured shows that the non-compliance with freelancer.pdf
  20. Trendy wood burners TRIPLE the level of harmful pollution particles | Daily Mail Online WWW.GOOGLE.COM Researchers from the University of Sheffield placed pollution... Do you believe it now?
  21. The world is never in balance. It is always changing, it just happens that at this particular moment in the history of the world human activity is causing the change and as humans we could try and slow or reverse that change if we wanted. Or not..
  22. Not debating that. But if we all did it it would be bad and sending it to a municipal waste collection would probably be better.
  23. I don't know for sure and have no evidence to support my argument (I am sure someone with more time could find some), but am pretty sure you are wrong, small scale burning of waste in a domestic appliance is going to be releasing all kinds of nasties into the local atmosphere. While all the transport especially if it is international has an environmental cost I reckon micro scale home burning will be WAY worse. There is nothing wrong with properly designed landfill. It doesn't take up that much space and people are going to start mining them as a resource soon.
  24. I wouldn't worry about it.
  25. He has been doing them for years and has got the design down. The Nissan is a fair bit smaller then our 3.5 ton isuzus and not sure I would want it as a main vehicle, but we run it along side bigger trucks and sometimes it's small size is useful. We had a nightmare with Nissan loughborough fitting a replacement adblue pipe, but can't really blame wesellanyvans for that.
