Rushcliffe scouts have a fantastic woodland where the scouts camp. The trees have not been actively managed and have basically been left to to their own thing for the last 40- 50 years. It is predominantly ash, with a few sycamore and an mixed understory. My kids have been camping there for years and it is great, no facilities, no running water a bucket to toilet in, hammocks to sleep in etc.. There has always been a lot of deadwood and standing dead trees and I always have a wonder round to see what they have tied there hammocks to and its not always been great. The trees probably have a DBH range of 30-75cm, tall up to 20m skinny things that probably should have been thinned out in the past. Over the last few years I have been very concerned that it is going to be wiped out by ADB and even if only a small percentage of the trees were to succumb it would become a very dangerous place to be. ADB is only really starting to take hold around here and I was up at the site last night and noticed a number of the ash trees were not looking great and there were several medium sized dead elms. The scouts obviously don't have a budget to DW or remove the trees, I don't know if it is even surveyed. What would you recommend they do? My thoughts are it might be worth getting a contractor in now before it goes to crap.. Could the timber be sold standing now while still OK and they could possibly make some money or at least cover the costs? Could a low impact contractor get in take out the ash and leave the understorey so there is still something left? If nothing is done it likely to become unsafe and a liability? There is access up a steep track and a neighbouring plot has recently been thinned, and logs extracted.

I have built my business over the last 17 years and we employ 9 or 10 guys, I have not been on the tools for at least 5 years and run around quoting and organising, plus surveys. If I was doing it again, I am not sure I would bother.. There is a lot to be said for staying small, investing in equipment and yourself. I doubt I am better off financially either and the stress staff cause is relentless....!

Not sure what I am in denial about? I have not said what I charged or didn't. I started a thread to discuss, what different opinions were. Employees are alway doing stupid things that cost the employer. I am not sure how bollovking the foreman will help. I am sure he us pretty aware I am not happy about it.

I have been running this company over 17 years, you are going to make a few cock ups.. I am not going to post threads about the jobs that go to plan. I doubt they are going to create much discussion..

I have mentioned this job before, client with 15 or so large ash trees dead or dying with ADB in a garden. Probably a week or twos work to do a propper job, clearing up etc.. The client is not willing to pay the rate I quoted for the job, claiming (while sat in his brand new electric Jag) he can't afford it. It is a lot of work. We have done a fair amount of work for him at his large house and his other properties over the years so I want to keep him on side. I explain it's a difficult job and I have to add some contingency incase things go wrong and so suggest a day rate where I will send 3 guys, LR, chipper and 28m MEWP. He can decide what work they do, we can concentrate on the technical and leave a mess for him to tidy up etc.. He opts for 2 days, but after the first day decides he needs a third which I accommodate, as we have the 15 ton 28m Mewp onsite...Even though it screws up my diary.. On the second day the guys get the 4wd MEWP stuck.. It costs £650 to get it pulled out and they basically get bugger all work done. So as he was on a day rate should he pay for the 3 days? 2 days? Or some compromise?

Mid sized grinder recommendations?

I am sure justme will confirm, but I am fairly sure you have to do the C1 first.

We are thinking that possibly we could streamline our stump grinding operation, possibly replacing the HB20 and the 2150 with an SG40. We don't do many big stumps, the big grinder probably only goes out a couple of times a month, the little one goes out more but only a couple of times a week. We could also get rid of a trailer and free up some space. The HB20 in a 2011 model we have had since new, it has had a new engine last year, and clutch last week, the clock says 465 hrs. It is currently running fine. The 2150 also a 2011 model (we purchased in 2015) runs fine on a long teather, we have a remote but it does not worked reliably and we have not managed to find someone with the electrical knowhow to sort and as its works fine without we never really pursued the fix. I didn't have the key so not sure of the hours, but they will be low for the age of the machine. They have NOT been tarted up. They have the original stickers from the factory. Dean at Bandit has given us a trade in price and there is a wait for the SG40's so there is no rush to be rid of them. What do people think they are worth on the private market?

You are considerably cheaper then what we pay for C1+E.. I think we have paid closer to £3,000.. and that's if they pass first time.

As an employer with 7.5 ton trucks, 3.5 ton trucks, sub 750kg chippers and bigger chippers. Some drivers with grandfather rights, some with trailer licence, some with out. It can be challenging sorting crews.. It is a big investment putting an employee through c1+e.. Having c1+e is an asset as long as you can actually drive the truck.. (I have had employees with the license who wouldn't drive the trucks)

How much is a low (for year) mileage (108,235) 2000 3.5ton TD5 worth? We would consider selling ours for the right price. We have have owned it since 2011, it probably does less than 3000 miles a year, but serviced annually, normally at a Landrover specialist. It has never caused us much trouble, little bits and pieces, one of the diffs locked up a few years back and had to be replaced. We obviously don't use it much goes out towing the grinder or when we have to cross a park. They do age well. first two pictures were taken in 2012 last one this morning..

I recently had some guys do some training at our yard using our MEWP and its how we do first aid training. It works well and simpler then having to send guys off site. I need to put at least 1 member of staff through stump grinder training. We could do the training from our Yard in Draycott, DE72 3NX we have a room that could be used for a classroom, 2 grinders a HB20 and a bandit 2150 that we could use and we can find some stumps onsite. We could also come to an arrangement where you bring others to site to run the training using our facilities and grinders. I also need someone to be assessed for the chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting so interested if there are any independent assessors who might be up to do that. While I think about it need some street works training too. If this something you could help with give me a call? 07970325361. [email protected]

Export them all to eastern Europe and Africa.

We have a big grinder, but the narrow access machine is probably used more often. Bandit are not doing the hb20 any more.
-
Thinking about changing our old HB20. What is out there, what is good these days.

Customers asking to pay cash to avoid VAT.
benedmonds replied to benedmonds's topic in Business Management
My initial question was half in jest and my standard answer is "sorry, everything has to go through the books." I was just starting some discussion to break up the day.. As a medium sized firm with three teams out, I probably have more clients than many so probably get asked the question more. I find it interesting that so many respectable people are happy to ask me to break the law to save them a few quid. -
