  1. Do you know anything about tree surgery? It's not rocket science, but not a business I would go into without at least a bit of experience.
  2. Time has come to pass the old LR on to someone who can give it some love. We have owned it for the last 10 years, serviced every year, had a bunch of welding and wheel bearing done and now has 12 months mot. 130 tipper. TD5, year 2000 only 110000 miles. It has not been used hard and it's most extreme off roading it has done has been across a golf course.. The interior and exterior is very tatty.. Don't know if the winch works, not had a rope on it for years.. Tidy crew cab 130's seem to be going for silly money. What's a scruffy tipper worth?
  3. One good reason is that you don't mix them up with climbing kit.
  4. I think TO's do it to save them a job of making a TPO. I am sure there must be a bunch of paper work involved and they seem to be under resourced. Much easier for them to ask you to withdraw and re apply for works they are happy with. I would drop them a note to say that's not want client wants or just wait the 6weeks and carry on.
  5. Both times involved a mad rush to purchase a harness the morning of the training. We should have learnt after the first time.... I have a used once harness from the first training but it was over 5 years old so obviously couldn't be used in our more recent training.. The guys all use their tree harnesses.
  6. I have on 2 separate occasions from 2 different companies been told we needed a full body harness to do the Mewp training..
  7. I was driving so pretty dead time.. I am also a mug when it comes to old people and their sob stories. Had an old guy a few months back who hadn't paid his £1,600 invoice, after 30 minutes listening to his wowes and how he had loved the trees (more neglected conifers) and it was his neighbour who wanted them out and he had had to buy a new boiler and could not afford it etc, etc.... He ended up giving me a cheque for £700 and I still felt like I had robbed him.. But still not sure I wasn't played.. I can not understand how some people are willing to rip off old folk, I don't know how they could sleep at night, knowing the distress they cause.
  8. Since when has the op or question made a difference to people's posts..😃 Your post confirmed my recollection. Cheers. I wrote her a report 2 years ago saying they should be felled. But I spent 35 mins on the phone to her today, ending up with her in tears about the thought of them being killed..
  9. I have a client with a high hedge, completely neglected, you can't see easily from the pictures but the garden side takes up half the garden. My advice was it should come out... However the client LOVES IT.. she has been isolating for the last 2 years and sits watching the birds and is devastated about the possibility of it being removed. The hedge was reduced to approx 7m as part of a remedial notice 4 or 5 years ago and cut back to the boundary by the neighbour. She has had another remedial notice and the trees are to be cut to 4m. Contractors arranged by the council or neighbour (it is a little confusing) turned up in March 2020 but left when a nest was found. In my opinion a reduction of 4m is likely to kill most of the trees. The branches loop down so if reduced to 4m there will be not much left.. It is possible that the two end trees will survive such treatment, any surviving trees will offer very little amenity value. I have a vague memory, but can't recall. Can an actional hedge height be applied if it is going to result in the death of the hedge? Am I imagining this?

We have owned this truck since 2013 and it has been one of the the best and most reliable vehicles we have owned easily outlasting several Iveco tippers. For the last few years it has been a back up truck as it is just to scruffy for our company image.. The good: It is a wide cab so 3 can sit without being squished It is the 3l and pulls like a train It is a downsized truck rather that an upsized van Amazing turning circle Huge ali box that will tip anything you put in it Big toolboxes (We enlarged them so we would be less likely to overload the truck with chip) Towbar Low mileage for year approx 110,000 Currently wrapped in yellow - this can be removed leaving you with a red truck so your choice of colour.. Has been serviced every year since we have owned it. 3.5 tonner The Bad: The drivers window will not go up The MOT is up at the 11th of November 2021 - it will probably need some work SOLD WITHOUT WARRANTY PLUS VAT The ugly: Pretty much all of it..While mechanically we service our vehicles the truck has been bashed and not loved. Needs a good clean.. Collection from the East Midlands DE72 3NX Bid on Ebay or phone Steve: 07786 916103

  11. I had a Mazda bongo, it was mint when it arrived, despite its age.. Never had any issues. Regularly search on Japanese sites looking at land cruisers.
  12. Just realized our MEWP hire company has been charging us for hired in plant insurance at 20 percent of the hire cost. When we have hired in plant with NFU.. I don't pay our invoices so not seen them, but we have been hiring a truck mount full time for last few months and noticed the nearly £3k a month was rather more than I was quoted..
  13. There is no reason why you couldn't invest in the kit, truck, chipper etc.. start up a tree business and employ a climber. I would suggest you would want at least to have a rescue ticket. Then you could get in a free lance climber or employ one. It's not the route most take, but not sure the route most take is the best route.. Another option would be to go into business with a partner. When we started Canopy my business partner was a similar age to you, he had done little in the way of arb and had only done his basic tickets. I had the ARB knowledge and did most of the climbing. Not sure I would recommend it. I am sure there are easier ways to make a living. I have been in business nearly 18 years and it's not getting any easier..
  14. Has anyone done this? What are the actual cost savings.. I know some of you are pro the benefits of leasing. My personal view has always been buy a car after the initial depreciation has gone, I am not fussy about extras or having a new car, I can't get over the fact that is going to have cost me £x000s as soon as I have driven it out of the showroom. But my accountant suggested buying an electric car had potential tax benefits.. I am trying to get my head around what those actually add up too. Kona on 24 month lease would cost me £7,500 a year. Electric would be less than £500 if my sums are right.. the benefit in kind is another £400..? No tax. Insurance.

  16. I don't think target fixation is the problem with trees, it's more excess speed and drivers losing control. Interestingly the wiki description mentions paragliding and I have a vivid memory from 25 years ago crashing a hang glider in a classic target fixation moment. Loads of space to land and I went straight into this boat. Quite embaracing as we were promoting tandem flights infront of a packed restaurant at the time..
  17. Apparently 3000 people a year killed in the US driving into trees.. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.irf.global/wp-content/uploads/Bradley-Winkelbauer-The_Killer_Tree_Problem.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwi10OTckIvzAhVRglwKHZbuCqQQFnoECEUQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0UMM2QuZMn6SUdgK8zWZyB There are 2 trees both within a mile of where I live which young men/boys have killed themselves by driving too fast into them the last few years. Both now shrines with attached football kits and photos.. I guess felling all roadside trees could save quite as few lives, but I would suggest that would be a disproportionate response..
  18. I see that now... 😃 We had strimmed and sprayed it a few years back, then the rhus wasn't the problem, the backgarden was 6ft of brambles. I didn't even look at the site last year, he called and I just sent the guys to strim and spray the regrowth. Was a shock to see the re growth..
  19. The back garden is the same but bigger.. It looks like we fertilised it rather than herbcided it..
  20. We strimmed a chaps garden in May, left it for a couple of weeks then sprayed with roundup. He called us back and asked us to do it again 4 month later.. I think we need a better solution as it is way worse that it was in May. Anyone a better method of control..
  21. It seems logical that young drivers with little training are going to be considerably higher risk and that training would reduce the risk. There are relatively few tractors so will be relatively few incidents but that also means relatively little training would be involved to upskill the young farmers. However the farming community is a pretty strong lobbying force that resists change especially when it concerns the health and safety and factors that make running small family farms more expensive. Most teenage boys do stupid things. A quick search (as I am not that interested) and I found this research that states: .. young tractor drivers (aged 15 to 24) account for an above-average proportion of accidents compared with this age group‘s share of the population as a whole.. https://circabc.europa.eu/sd/a/9ee83ee8-5013-4910-8c14-7080f0166745/09_2_DE report_UDV-kompakt_RisikoTraktor.pdf
  22. Just because they have stupid rules for farmers doesn't mean it makes sense to get rid of sensible rules for towing. The sensible thing to do would have been to have a training for tractor driving. Kids driving tractors and trailers is frankly scary..
  23. I bet the chipper manufacturers who have spent a fortune getting sub 750kg chippers are going to be pissed and I imagine the sub 750 market will probably take a dive. It's going to make my life much simpler..
  24. Alot can happen or not in 6 to10 years and 100,000 miles.. We have have had 2 Iveco 3.5 tonners, one crew cab tipper and one standard. I did not rate them as ARB vehicles. The 6.5 ton however was great. Personally prefer the Japanese trucks for 3.5 tonners. We have an izusu, mitsubishi and Nissan now all good.
